If The 747 Is A Jumbo What Shall We Call The A380

Thu Oct 21, 2004 5:01 am

The question is self explanatory and please no A v B postings.

I guess we'd start calling it an African elephant; the 747 would be an Indian/Asian elephant.

The African elephant is larger, you see.

PS. No mention of swallows please.

well...since the media often refers to 767s, 777s, and A300s as jumbos, I suppose we could follow in their footsteps and call the A380...JUMBO.

In all honesty, I think the "Double-decker" is a nice, descriptive name for it.

So...
747 Jumbo
A380 Double Decker

Geoffm: Good idea but I am sure the Boeingers will always add "White" if elephant is part of the name
767-332ER: Is not the 747 a double decker? Perhaps also the A330 and other aircraft that have galleys or toilets on the lower deck. Suggestion would therefore not be exclusive to A380.
Azjetgeek: A possibility but perhaps more a nautical term?
Sayem55: Great idea but somehow does not fit an European airliner
Levent: Megaliner is perhaps too nautical?

My suggestion "Whopper" but BurgerKing might not be too happy, so perhaps Whopper Jet After all a Jumbo could be a Jumbo Hot Dog or Jumbo Coke.

Any more suggestions?

An airline (SQ?) already refers to its A340s (or 747s?) as Megajets, I think

But if not, that would be a great suggestion.

I tend to like Whale for the A380's nickname. It's huge fusulage is bigger than almost all whales, it is a short name that says it all. If you ever get to see whales in open waters, you know they are great creatures that are truly graceful in the water. Other possible nicknames: "Big Bus", "Big Bird" (like the Sesame Street character).

How about "Big-Crunch"... but, then, its Kentucky. I believe Europeans call it Zinger so how about "Zinger Jet".

BCAL-SQ refers to the 744 as 'megatop'. Their 345 has no current name, and the 777s are nicknamed 'jubilee'
Older aircraft include 743-'big top' and 343-'celestar'.

So I do not think there is a 'megajet' in the SQ fleet.

I am likeing "The Whale"

if ANA went ahead and ordered some A380s they could pain one in there old Whale livery which was applied to a 744D and 763.

BCAL,

The 747 is a double-decker but of course, not a true one, because it does not occupy the full lenght of the a/c. The lower galleys on L10's, 747s and 777s well, those wouldn't classify due to the inability to have passengers there, so I'm sticking to the term "Double-decker" because of the accuracy in which the A380 portrays it.

Kalakaua

I think that Titan of the skies might soon be changed to Titanic of the Skies (the Boeingers would love that - the largest passenger airliner ever built) and that might perhaps be cursing the plane before she even gets off the ground, don't you think? Just my thought.

767-332ER

I liked double decker. Just thought it would not be unique to the A380.

Infact, it'll be interesting to see what nickname Singapore Airlines adopts for its fleet of 10 A380s, considering the appropriately-named Megatop 747.

A more proper term would be Super-Jumbo, which would include A380, An-225 and Spruce Goose.

Well we can't pick too big of a name, there will be a bigger one in the future and calling this the biggest is rather primitive.  Smile
