Help Choosing Between Flights STL-DEN

Sun Oct 31, 2004 2:11 am

Hey all,

I'm looking to head west for a ski trip from Dec. 14-19. Three airlines offer service from STL-DEN nonstop. F9, AA, and UA. All three depart at identical times in the morning. UA and AA's flights are a little less so I'm trying to decide between the two. The AA flights are on RJs and UA is more than likely going to be a 733 or 735.

Having said that, what are your opinions. I've flown F9 and TSA on this route. I've never been on UA. Do the 737s have ch. 9? I'm a pilot so that would probably make the flight more enjoyable. At the same time, I find the ERJ to be very comfortable as I'm not very tall. I'm torn between the two so I thought I'd see what you seasoned veterans of airline travel have to say. Thanks for the input!

I'd take UA just to avoid those blasted ERJs. All UA mainline aircraft are equipped with "From the Flight Deck" (Channel 9), but it is the captain's choice to turn it on. Most of the time, it is on.

Choose the one with the best on-time record.

For the dates Dec. 14-19, United lists the STL-DEN flights as 90% on-time, and DEN-STL as 90% and 80%. The first return flight is a SkyWest CRJ.  Big grin

I'd stay off the RJ's personally. I'd also avoid Skywest if you are travelling later in the day.

It is my experience that 98% of the time I am flying a 733 or 735 on United channel 9 is turned on. In fact, I know where the switch is located in the cockpit and I always check that it is ON during my pre-flight flight desk visit.  Smile If I see it in the OFF position from the previous flight, I remind the crew to turn it on. The other 2% of the time it's busted on that particular aircraft.

On the United widebodies, I find that rate drops to about 75%. The senior Captains don't seem to like it on as much.

Instead of non-stop, go STL-MSP-DEN, I did that just for fun this past summer (well DEN-MSP-STL-MSP-DEN all in one day) just to get on the DC-9-10 which i believe is still running down to STL.  Smile

Personally I would go with United. Just having the possibility of CH.9 would put me on United if the fares are the same. Just out of curiosity, where are you going skiing?

Thaks for the replies everybody! It sounds like United is in the lead. Then again, with a name like "FriendlySkies" I think some here are a little biased  Smile I do enjoy the fact that the ERJs have the single seat on the left side, especially at 6am. However, as stated litening to ATC would be nice as I know what they are talking about. How are UA's 737s configured? 3-3?

Dinker225, to answer your question I'll be skiing at Keystone. This is only my second time out there and I've only had two days of skiing during spring break last year. Quite frankly, I'm out there to have fun and there is so much to explore at keystone that I don't think I'll want to leave there.
