Best Airport In The World?

Wed Dec 08, 2004 12:14 am

Most of the topic of conversation on this site is in regards to airports is either about size passenger numbers or plane movement but which airport is the best overall in terms of passenger convenience, quality, offers the best facilities and can link you to destinations all around the world.

Manchester airport has been voted the best British airport for as long as I can
Remember and was voted the best in the world a few years back, this is due to some of the key features at the airport which include;

Train, bus, and couch terminal that offers easy access to the airport.

A sky link that connects all three terminals the train station and a 5 star hotel

Fantastic aviation viewing facities that were also voted to be the best in the UK.

It is also a very modern looking airport with great scenery and architecture.

If MAN is the best airport in the world LOS must come in a close second.

My vote :
1) CDG of course, fast connections, nice architecture with the 2E/2F, train station and a wide choice of hotels.

I think I might have to say that BCN is the one I like the most, except for the walking.

Amsterdam Schipol or Singapore Changi are my personal favorites as they

have EVERYTHING you could need or want in an Airport.. or a small city for

that matter!!!
I do, I don't, whatever.......

Changi is just amazing as far as shopping goes...

FRA no 1 offers amusing potential, mainly for travelling businessmen 'browsing' the on-concourse sex shop.

Any airport where people have died due to architectural problems automatically gets a veto, IMHO.  Big grin (So count DXB out as well.)

I went to heathrow to see some of the aircraft that we don't get at Manchester although all I saw was yellow boards that have been placed on the fences to prevent you from doing this for what reason im not sure , do they have aviation viewing facilities at Heathrow.

UTA_flyingHIGH, you obviously mean CDG is great when the roof is not caving in, correct?  Big grin

personally I love AMS but if Changi keeps winning awards for best airport, it's probably a pretty good one as well...

I don't know about worldwide - most airports I've been through are in the third world (LIM, NBO etc) or famous for being unruly (SYD, MAD).....

But I think in the UK honourable mention goes to STN. One of those airports where you can sort of 'see' where you're going. I've never once had that moment where're you've no idea how much further it really is to your gate and start to panic.....which happens plenty at the likes of LHR!

Hong Kong International Airport gets my 1st vote!

Singapore's Changi gets my second, the low ceiling probably makes it my second choice as I do like the big open feeling of Hong Kong's airport.

No airport in the world can beat the architecture of the new Asian airports of HKG, ICN & KUL, soon to joined by BKK. On the other hand, I'm extremely impressed by SIN : despite having a 1980's look, it continues to maintain an extremely high standard of operation, constantly rank among the best airports in the world. Looks ain't everything, but it does give a very good 1st impression : you really should try arriving in KUL, HKG or ICN for the first time  Smile.

YVR would get my vote.

Great access for any mode of transportation, indoor viewing area, great amenities, fab food choices.

Smaller than the ones noted above, but still a great airport

I've loved every Scandinavian airport I've passed through so far (and I'm also including Iceland in that, although not sure if it officially counts as Scandinavia). The exceptions being Longyearbyen, Norway, which is little more than a hangar with some check-in desks, and Reykjavik, Iceland, which is convenient and relaxed, but not much more to write home about.

On my list so far are CPH, HEL, OSL, TOS, LYR, KEF, REK and AEY and I've found them to be clean, bright, airy, modern, relaxed places. I've yet to experience any of the Swedish airports, but hope to put that right early next year.

Best airport that I have been to is WLG. Best airport in terms of turbulance Smile and VERY spotter friendly. You can even have aircraft landing that are less 100 metres above you.

Detroit is the best I've ever been in. Amsterdam has wonderful shopping, but it's a long long hike from end of E to outbound flights on D. Minneapolis is a nice place, but again, loads of hiking. Memphis is outdated, O'Hare is horrible to get from one terminal to another, LAX is totally confusing, I don't even count Logan any more -- off my list completely. Heathrow is definitely confusing, I'm lost in Frankfurt, Houston is hard to get from one terminal to another,Mexico City is awful, especially coming in on an international flight, and going out on a domestic commuter. Toronto is a nice airport, but only if you're on Air Canada. I don't like Dulles, or Reagan or Baltimore, and I've never been in any of the far east airports, so I'll vote for the new terminal at DTW.

For overall facilities: Singapore Changi and Amsterdam Schipol

For quickest baggage clearance: Basel

For the most impressive transport connection: Shanghai Pu Dong- a monorail that goes at 430km/hr towards downtown

For views on landing: Kai Tak, the old one in Hong Kong

Bangkok gets an honourable mention for having a golf course inbetween its main runways

I'm not exactly a world traveler, but I am consistently impressed by the "Edward H. McNamara Northwest Airlines WorldGateway (although now I guess it'll be the Skyteam Alliance WorldGateway) Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport"... How's that for a name?

ISP - Long Island/Islip MacArthur Airport
Now that WN has made the new 4 gate concourse, and has announce the addition of adding 4 more, it is a beautiful airport. The other 2 wings of the airport are being re-done as well.

Currently
Southwest Airlines- BWI, MDW, TPA, FLL, MCO, PBI, LAS, BNA
Continental Connection- CLE, ALB
Atlantic Southeast Airlines- ATL
Delta Connection- CVG
U.S. Airways Express- PHL, BOS, ALB

Over the years we've had:
Trans World Airlines
Continental Airlines
Eastern Airlines
American Airlines
American Eagle
U.S. Air
United Airlines
New York Air
Northeastern Airlines
Empire Airlines
AirTran
PanAm
Carnival Airlines
Gateway Airlines
And maybe I forgot a few...

Without a doubt, 57AZ.

1) no traffic to fight

2) short walk from curb to airside

3) less than a minute from the house

4) beautiful scenery

5) no security hassles

6) excellent airside viewing

7) no baggage problems

8) direct flights to anywhere you want to go or with one service stop
