Best Way To NZ From NYC

Tue Dec 07, 2004 1:22 am

My Fiance and I are planning a trip to New Zealand from NYC in the fall of 2005. Due to a very generous donation, we have enough Amex points to go J class. We would like to do it one-stop. NYC-LAX-AKL. That leaves Quantas or New Zealand, correct?

Now for some questions. The direct Amex-Quantas partnership only allows booking fo coach seats, so that's out. I could dump all the amex miles into Continental miles and they have a partnership with Quantas for J class seats.

I could also dump them into USAirways miles and then book with Quantas. However, if USAirways were Chapter 7 by then (i hope they aren't, i like flying them) would the ticket be worthless or is it a real Quantas ticket? Or i could book USAirways into Star Alliance and get onto New Zealand airlines. What would that ticket be like?

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Don't know how Amex points plays with SQ, but you could also go on SQ, EWR-SIN-AKL.

LAX-AKL - Worth bearing in mind that NZ1 gets in to AKL before the Qantas flight. Auckland customs/immigration lines can be diabolical by 7-8am as all the overnight asian/americas flights start to pour in.

In the air, NZ/QF are both good carriers, with good service reputations. By Mid to late 2005, it is probably that some of the refitted NZ 747's will be on this route, with the new Virgin-Style flatbed business seats. However, not all aircraft will have been converted, so don't count on it at that time.

Interesting idea going with SQ. However, according to their awards chart http://img.singaporeair.com/pdf/SQMI_RoundTripAwards.pdf EWR-SIN-AKL would require more miles then we have (340,000 for 2 j class seats). Compared to 205,000 for Continental.

Air Tahiti Nui would be another option. They may well have some fare specials to launch their new service.

NZ from SFO arrives before any flight from the US, so you avoid any potential customs problems.

You also avoid LAX Terminal 2 by using SFO. Getting from the UA terminal to T2 at LAX is not convenient, and T2 at LAX has the personality of a Greyhound station.

Highly recommend NYC-UA-SFO-NZ-AKL.

forgot to mention...

if you use UA between JFK and LAX or SFO, try to get on the flights with 'p.s.' service - they have upgraded some of these flights with vastly improved business class service. check out http://www.unitedps.com/main.html

What's more, if you take the SFO service with Air New Zealand, you will probably get the 777, which will have the new cabin. The first 777 is supposed to be in service in September, while the first 747 should be fitted with the new cabin in June, routing through SFO, according to this thread: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1846955/

1st aircraft ZK-SUI will be finished in late June, with ZK-SUJ finished in late August.

If you do NYC-SFO-AKL with UA and NZ then your basically guaranteed that on the SFO-AKL route that you will either get the B772ER with new Virgin cabin or the B744 with new Virgin Cabin

I think you were them. Still, as many times as Qantas is mentioned here, I think we can start spelling it right on A.net. It is funny though, that QF's site pops up if you type in www.quantas.com.

I wound up booking on QANTAS (sorry for my spelling in the original post).

Even though it would be neat to fly on NZ's new 777 from SFO or to get in earlier in the day, the process of transferring miles from Amex to CO, and then booking on QF was easier.

Also, QF J class seats are 105,000 miles each vs. 120,000 each for NZ.

Hey, 2 J class seats on QF to Auckland, I'm not complaining!!!!

Another county heard from...

I did the trip from JFK -> AKL for my honeymoon almost a year ago today. It's a long way to fly even in J. I flew JFK->LAX->PPT->AKL (UA to LAX and NZ to PPT and AKL)

I highly recommend the flight sequence and stopping off in Tahiti for a few days before you get to NZ.

Why?

1) Time zone difference between AKL and PPT is 1 hour (plus 1 day over the dateline) Compare that to the ~18 hour NYC-AKL time difference. Our wedding time was chaotic and we were planning on running all over New Zealand. So it was nice to take a few days, do nothing, reset our clock lying on the beach drinking daquiris. Once we arrived in AKL we were adjusted, rested and relaxed.

2) Uh, cause it's Tahiti.

2.5) What's a nicer surprise for your new wife than a mini-vacation to Tahiti?

3) Our travel agent said we would save a few grand by doing the stopover.

4) Uh, cause it's Tahiti.

I've found the easiest way for me is to go to LAX, get a good night's sleep and then take the noon flight to SYD, which arrives in the evening - just in time for another good night's sleep. If you can route through SYD you might enjoy a day or two there before heading to NZ. Most people don't get to that part of the world very often so it's worth a thought - definitely a great city to visit!

Either go NYC-LAX or NYC-SFO with UA and then LAX-AKL or SFO-AKL with NZ. I think UA and NZ code share on routes to NYC.
Another way would be to go by QF, but then you would have an extra stop in Australia.
I have heard that transit passengers have to pay airport tax in Australia, and it is something like $100, while I am not sure if this is true, I would boycott Australia just in case you do have to pay the tax.
I would also imagine that the NZ/UA combination would be the quickest and fastest way there.

And whats wrong with QF's LAX-AKL non-stop service? Don't forget that.

Either way AA/QF or UA/NZ I would say. TN would be an option aswell as mentioned above.

Sorry I forgot about QF. It really depends on how many stops you want. With TN, you have to stop twice, but with NZ/UZ or QF/AA you only have to stop once.
Plus with NZ/UA, you have the choice of going via SFO or LAX.

TN will only be 1 stop once they start JFK-PPT non-stop in July 2005.

In that case TN may be a good choice if one wishes to boycott transit in LAX or SFO.

I have been told that Transit through SFO is much less of a hassle that LAX. Transit at LAX is a huge hassele and very stressful because to the volume of people and the security measures etc...

I think he means CO to HNL and then NZ to AKL from HNL. CO hasn't served NZ in over a decade.

Makes sense now, thanks SUJ.

Mind you CO's flights were always full when they flew here, yeild was pretty average to say the least though.

OJH, I have heard that has/is been looked at but LAX-LHR is to lucrative to give up, though it could happen.

One would imagine that when and if granted a second slot at LHR, that NZ would go AKL-HKG-LHR before using SFO as the HKG route has been on the cards for ages.

Pretty sure that the British Goverment won't allow NZ to fly more than once daily to LHR, they have been granted rights from the HKG Goverment though i'm pretty sure. From what i've heard, the second daily to LHR is down the list a little for NZ now, they have other possible new routes to open before this.
