Need Advice Getting To Russia...

Wed Dec 22, 2004 7:36 am

Soon to be holding my JD from UT Law, interviewed with a firm that would give me the possibility of flying to Moscow quarterly, what frequent flyer program could I most benefit from getting to Moscow? I would be responsible for booking my own flights and will be reimbursed after I file an expense report. Currently, living near AUS, but will relocate near ORD for the office of the firm and access of the airport. I am Gold status at AA now, doesn't help that AA doesn't go farther than FCO. Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks in AAdvance!

Remember partnerships with the AmericanAAdvantage Program! You could take, for example, AA ORD-LHR and BA LHR-SVO. Go to the AA website and check out the partner airlines with their FF program. Another alternative is with Delta. You could travel DL from ORD to AMS (Amsterdam) and KLM to Moscow or DL to CDG (Paris) and AF to Moscow. If as an attorney on a long international flight, you will probably be entitled to First Class or Biz Class travel and you will get great points acculmation (1.5 or 2 times coach points). One note: You won't get any points on BA from the USA airports also served with non-stop service by AA. Double check AA's AAdvantage program on the AA.com website as to that issue.

Join any SkyTeam FFP, they tend to have more generous rules about mileage/segment awards than OW. I'd suggest either Air France or KLM - you'd get much better inflight service than with DL.

I would STRONGLY suggest the AA/BA combination because BA service is very good and mainly because BA and Swiss are curently the only airlines flying into DME - Domodedovo airport.
Believe me - SVO Sheretmeyevo Airport is one of the worst airports in the world and customs there alone can take 2 hours. Very frustrating after flying a long way. In comparison DME is modern, user friendly and customs much quicker. Using DME you will be at your hotel in taking a shower while you could still be in line at SVO.

hope that helps!

9 out of 10 Chechen suicide bombers prefer security at DME over the one at SVO.

I have heard SVO is very old compared to DME. I just recentally started doing research on both airports and carriers that fly into both from JFK or EWR. So with AF I could do ORD-CDG-DME?

Aa777jr,
AFAIK Air France flies to SVO. If you insist on DME, then consider SWISS. The catch with BA is: getting from DME across the Atlantic. There are two flights a day, BA873/BA875 both departing late afternoon/evening, which makes it impossible to connect.

I never understood why more American carriers aren't serving Moscow!!! Moscow is becoming a huge and important city in Europe. Delta is the only one serving Moscow out of US carriers, and I have to say that they are doing very well. Their flights are mostly full. My next flight with DL SFO-JFK-SVO and back is after tomorrow!! I can't wait!

Well, CO will start flying EWR-DME in 2006, so you will eventually be able to do ORD-EWR-DME, but until that time, you would have to connect in AMS to KL, with a routing of ORD-EWR-AMS-SVO. I would probably say that it would be most convenient to do AA/BA until CO's route starts up.
