My home airport is PHX
. I've flown into and out of this airport since I was just a little boy (I was probably 3 or 4, but the earliest I can recall was when I was 5). I had the "pleasure" of actually flying out of old Terminal 1, which has since met the wrecking ball. I also recall when Terminal 2 opened. It was such a marked improvement over No. 1.
Unfortunately, it appears that the Sky Harbor people and City of Phoenix have become so enamored with Terminal 4, which houses HP
and WestJet, among others, that they only seem to make improvements there while ignoring Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 4 is fantastic and one of the best I've ever flown out of or into. Unfortunately, there are marked differences at 2 and 3, especially Term 2.
I believe the following improvements should be made at Terminal 2 so that it could absorb some of the traffic from Term 3:
1. Enlarge gate lounges. Very crowded and uncomfortable.
2. Add more restaurants and other amenities.
3. Add more gates. Between 8 and 12 more would be a good start.
By expanding Term 2, Sky Harbor might be able to shift some of the airlines with minimal service in and out of PHX
. These include Midwest, Frontier, and ATA. Even JetBlue could be accommodated from Term 2 if such improvements were made, unless B6
has plans for major expansion.
Another improvement I'd like to see is adding more international carriers. At present, BA
is the only major one flying into and out of PHX
. Lufthansa cut out PHX
several months ago. I'd like to see Qantas, Virgin, and Aer Lingus join the gang at Sky Harbor.
