How Far Would You Go To Fly A 747

Fri Dec 31, 2004 5:15 pm

Since there is a chance of the 747 becoming extinct in the future..... and suppose we 747 fans don't get to fly one by then... How far would you guys go to pilot a 747 ? Would you take paycuts, or pay like $10,000 for a Lax Jfk flight or fight with someone or whatever you can think of.... Seriously what could/would you do ?

Wish y'all a very happy and prosperous New Year !!!  Smile

I would go to DENFTUA and pay the $1000/hr and fly their 747-400 simulator. Due to my medical issues, I cannot get behind the controls of the real thing...the sim is as close as I can come. I am reasonably proficient, but would need more time in the type on my sim before I attempt to take up the seat in the full motion sim in Denver.

What about the proposed 747-400 Advanced?

If this new proposed aircraft makes it into production, I think it will extend the 747's life for some years to come. I can see the 744F also remaining in service for a considerable to come, some airlines have had them delivered brand new in the last few years, and I'm sure there not willing to part with them! So all in all, I feel the 747 still has many years left in her, both as a passenger and cargo aircraft...

Cheers,
Ian.

In 2000, I was SO desperate to fly a 747, I booked a ticket from OKC-HKG via ORD on the way and LAX on the way back. Enjoyed every minute of it, even without PTV's on UA. What a wonderful awesome looking plane.

35 km - no more km!
I live 35 km away from FRA and this is my "home base". It depends on the price of the ticket, so I choose the airline. And the plane the airline is flying, I fly with it.
Wouldn't pay a cent extra for 747. On the other hand I would pay some money for smaller planes like 767, 330 or 340 cause of the better configuration. But the 3-4-3 in eco sucks.

For me, I prefer the biggest and widest plane I can get, or the 777 over the A340. Though, if it was between flying first class/business class on a smaller plane than flying economy on a larger plane, I'd have to take the smaller plane. But, there's nothing like pulling up to the gate when your plane is the largest. It's like pulling up to Sonic in sweet car and having everyone look at you. (If you're a redneck).

@Ual747: It's not only the size that matters  Wink/being sarcastic

As long as I am outside the plane, I can see it. As soon as I entered it, things change. Seat configuration is more important than the optical point. When I flew the QF wunala dreaming - it was great to see the colour scheme. As soon as I was in the plane, it was just another 747.

Hi,

Never been on a 74 but would love to hopefully going to US this
year (Happy New Year!) and I just can't wait for my first flight on
the mighty beast! I thought the 767-300 was great would love to
fly more but don't have the funds...  Crying

Never even been on a (true) widebody but I have been in more than
enough SAAB 340's, Pipers & Cessna's.

Just love huge jetliners the sexyist thing (apart from the obvisious...)

Happy New Year,

I'm not saying that it will become extinct and neither do I want it to.

How far would you go to "fly" a 747..... not "fly on" a 747.

Actually i have NEVER flown on a 747 ever in my life. I know it is amazing considering how long they have been around and how many there are out there. The closest I have ever come was from ORD-FRA. I while ago it was supposed to be a 744 but they changed the equipment to a 772 at the last minute. It sucked extremly and i am looking forward to flying in an Air China 744 next Christmas FRA-PEK unless they switch it with a 777 again.

I must be lucky considering I have probably flown the 747 more than any other aircraft. That is because I fly more trans-atlantic flights than anything else and the 747 is still very predominant although slowly disapearing. Come to think of it, I didn't fly a 747 this year. Just an A340. Bummer.

I would rather fly a 777 than a 747, at least a 777 with 2-5-2 seating. Sitting at the window I'm not as much of a prisoner. Having crossed the pond many times I must say 777 (with 2-5-2), 767 and 330/340 are all superior to the 747 because of the seating.

Paid less than $300 to fly the full motion 747-400 sim at the UA Denver Training Center last September, and I have been known to wait several hours for a 747 on a LAX or SFO-ORD run! Most always get F or C class. Wish I bought more hours in the sim.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well I guess I should count myself lucky then, having flown is several classics (747-100s) as well as a number the trusty 747-400s. I'm actually scheduled on a BA 747-400 from YYZ-LHR in March. The return leg is a 777-200 though.

Anyways, for those of you who haven't been lucky enough to get on the 'Queen of the Skies' yet, I wouldn't worry, I'd say they've still got plenty of life in them yet! Big grin

Cheers - Skytrain.

If flying 'Y', i'd pay extra to fly a 767 or 330/340,much prefer the layout on those over a 747.

Guys, I think the original question was about piloting a 747, not PAXing in one.  Smile

In November 2003 I had 3 hours in a full motion 747 classic simulator at JNB, did a couple of take offs and landings at JNB and CPT and also got to try my hand as an engineer while someone else flew....

We also did an auto landing in the sim, that was quite an experience sitting in the right seat!

Unfortunately a couple of weeks after that the sim was dismantled and moved out to make room for the 319 sim.....the 744 is still there though, need to make a plan!

After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I think the chances of pilots getting behind the controls of these operators aircraft are very high by the number in the fleet they have nothing to worry about.
