All Your First 747 Flights

Sun Jan 09, 2005 11:13 am

Hello fellow 747 fans! Time to salute our favorite aircraft once more by remembering our first 747 flights for each 747 type. If you can mention the name of the airline, the routing and the year or decade of your trip, will be appreciated.

Here is mine:

747-100 PA Pan Am Manila-Saigon 1975

747-200 JL Japan Air Lines Narita-HongKong Kaitak 1983

747SP UA United MNL-NRT 1988. This 747SP was being used as a feeder,
after the MNL-NRT segment, it flew NRT-SIN

747-400 NW Northwest DTW-KIX-MNL 1996

747-300 I am still hoping to catch IB JFK-MAD or Phuket Air, we'll see, I'll let you know by next year's reposting of this thread.

1997; FRA - BKK Thai

1998; FRA - LAX Lufthansa

1999; LHR - YYZ Air Canada (I believe it was a 747-400)

1999; FRA - SIN Singapore Airlines

1999; SIN - SYD Qantas

2000; LHR - HKG Cathay Pacific

2002; Papeete - CDG Air France

2004; LHR - CPT South African Airways

I believe these are all of them. The Thai flight was on a 747-300, all the remaining flights were on -400 series, if my memory serves me well.

I've only flown on the 747-400 and surprisingly my very first time on any 747 was only this past May when I went to New Zealand. I flew on Air New Zealand from LAX to AKL and another one back from AKL to LAX. On the same trip on the return leg I flew on a UA 744 from LAX to ORD.

This trip was also my first 777 flight with a 777-200 from ORD to LAX.

Definitely a memorable trip getting to finally fly on some of my favorite A/C.

First 747 flight for me was LHR-FRA-LHR with Pan Am. Date was 24-07-1972 out and 25-07-1972 back. Aircraft were 747-121A N653PA and N770PA. I dont remember the flight numbers. We should have flown out on the 23rd but the aircraft was delayed in the states, so my friend and I spent a really boring night trying to kip in Terminal 3. Couldn't complain though. We were both working for BCAL and the stand-by fare was about £2 or so. Big thumbs up

I forgot to add...

I mentioned my first 747 trip (TWA JFK-MAD-JFK 1994). But I forgot to add the link to my trip report about that:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/40213
(My First 747 Trip (JFK-MAD-JFK 1994) (describes my first, and only, 747 trip, when I flew TWA JFK-MAD-JFK in 1994).

Enjoy!

I've only ever flown on 747-400s:

Regular: British Airways, LHR to HKG (old), 1994. It was the day after the IRA mortar attacks on Heathrow.

Combi: KLM, HKG (new) to AMS, 2000. I can remember reading the safety card and noting it was a combi. It's quite possible the outward trip from Europe was also a combi, also.

Cheers

UA 747-400 SFO-DEN during 9/04

It was a mild disappointment as the original equipment was a 777 and I purposely booked my SFO-IND trip through DEN just for the 777. The substituted the 747-400 at the least minute.

I don't have the dates but since 1979 I have flown on the following variants
First flights on each variant shown as first entry in brackets.
-100 (TW / BA)
-100SR (NH)
-200 (TW / TV / BA / IB / NH)
-200SUD (KL)
-300 (KL)
-400 (CX / UA / TG / NH / BR / VS)
-SP (RB)
Thats just about the complete set. No freighter variants although the
KL -300 & BR -400 were "combi" aircraft. One of the NH - 400's was a domestic aircraft without winglets. For those who may not remember, TV (Late 70's & Early 80's) was Transamerica who operated trans-atlantic charter services from Europe (I flew MAN-LGW-YQX-JFK). The flight was so routed due to air traffic work to rule in the US. The route should have been a straight forward MAN-JFK (aircraft originating in LGW) but due to severe delay inbound to UK it was changed. There was a crew change at LGW. The journey took just over 14 hours from MAN!
Fantastic 4-Holers : Concorde, Boeing 747SP & Lockheed Jetstar - I'm lovin' it!

My first ever 747 flight was when I was just a 2 year old pup in '84 on a QF747-200, I can't remember that one but my parents told me I raised hell on that flight. It was SYD-HKG r/t.

My first 747 flight I can actually remember was in Dec '88 on a CX 747-200, SYD-HKG return. Since then I've done the same trip too many times to list suffice to say I'd always get to travel on a CX/QF 747-300/400 until 2001 when CX started switching to A340s and next Monday, I will have my first ever flight on a CX A330 on the SYD-HKG route. =) It's a sign of the times.

I have been on the following:
    KLM JFK-AMS April 1995
    Virgin Atlantic LHR-JFK April 1995
    BA LHR-JFK April 1997 I'm sure this was a 747-400
    Iberia JFK-MAD-JFK April 1998

If anyone can figure out what other variants the other flights were on that would be great. I cannot believe its been 7 years since I've flown a 747 route.

RE: All Your First 747 Flights

    Ahhhh, the memories.

    First 747 flights:

747-122 1981 UA SFO-HNL (most following -100s were on TW)
-Memorable for it feeling like a "flying living room".

    747-200 1987 PE LAX-EWR
-Memorable for boarding via stairs instead of a jetway at T-2. Return flight memorable for being the first time I saw Vegas at night from cruising altitude.

747-206M 1985 KL AMS-LAX (configured for main deck cargo)
-Memorable for being the first plane I was ever on that was de-iced, and that was in the combi configuration.

747-306M 1991 KL LAX-AMS (configured for full pax)
-Memorable for being first 747 polar flight in business class.

    747-436 1993 BA LHR-LAX
-Memorable for the fellow behind me saying "come on baby, get in the air!" during the longest take-off roll I'd ever experienced.

    Honorable mentions:

    First time inside a 747:
747-123 1971 or 72 (?) AA Admiral's Club Member's Day at SFO - Got a nice tour of the plane and piano bar in coach thanks to a neighbor who knew I loved planes.

    Shortest 747 flight:
747-122 1988 UA OAK-SFO (took flight as part of round-trip to qualify for triple miles all year with MileagePlus)

    747 flight to nowhere:
747-100 or -200 1988 CO LAX-LAX originally scheduled as LAX-EWR, but turned around near Denver due to engine shutdown. Also first time at the remote gates at LAX, as they off-loaded us while the mechanics opened up the cowling to look at it while they decided if it could be repaired to resume our flight or not.

    Most interesting in-air 747 sighting:
Late 80's while flying LGW-AMS on Transavia, the pilot pointed out a 747 nearby that had just departed LHR (I believe it was PIA), and was dumping fuel over the Channel. The 747 was leaving a long dark trail that almost looked like light smoke.

    Cheers.

Some people have all the luck!

    My first 747 was a Bristish Airways 747-200 in 1983, YYZ-LHR-YYZ.
    Followed by a 747-400 21 years later, SFO-LHR-SFO. My last 747.

Can't count the 757s, the 737-100/200/300/400/500/700s or Airbus 320 I have been on in the last 20years, too many.....
    Last 727 was American DFW-BOS in 1999.
Last MD80 was the same day, OAK-DFW.
Last DC-10 was in 1998 SFO-EWR-SFO on Continental.
Last L-1011 was in 1997 SFO-OGG-HNL-SFO on Rich International
Last 767 was in 1987 DFW-DEN-DFW on United.
No 777 yet, will be doing that in Mar05 to EWR-MAD-EWR.

Still have yet to ride the Airbus big bodies....

In planning my first big trip to New York in August, 1987, I was thrilled that I was FINALLY going to get to fly on a 747!! Problem was, I couldn't decide on TWA or Pan Am.

We finally decided on TWA, as our travel agent friend thought it would be a little more financially stable. She tried to talk us out of both airlines, but nobody else flew 747's transcontinentally.

We ended up on a TWA 747 LAX-JFK:

A baby screamed the entire flight...and not an infant - this was a two year old whose parents wouldn't discipline him. Otherwise, a great flight.

On the return flight, we flew a United DC-10 EWR-LAX:

Sadly, we are all familiar with the tragic accidents that occured to each of these types within ten years of that trip. I have always wondered if the plane I flew on was one of the unfortunate planes. Ever since the TWA 800 accident, I have kept track of every plane I flown on in since. The only noteable event to any planes I have flown since has been an emergency landing of a United 777 at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Some great pictures from up there!!
