Ahhhh, the memories.
First 747 flights:
747-122 1981 UA SFO
(most following -100s were on TW
-Memorable for it feeling like a "flying living room".
747-200 1987 PE LAX
-Memorable for boarding via stairs instead of a jetway at T-2. Return flight memorable for being the first time I saw Vegas at night from cruising altitude.
747-206M 1985 KL AMS
(configured for main deck cargo)
-Memorable for being the first plane I was ever on that was de-iced, and that was in the combi configuration.
747-306M 1991 KL LAX
(configured for full pax)
-Memorable for being first 747 polar flight in business class.
747-436 1993 BA LHR
-Memorable for the fellow behind me saying "come on baby, get in the air!" during the longest take-off roll I'd ever experienced.
First time inside a 747:
747-123 1971 or 72 (?) AA
Admiral's Club Member's Day at SFO
- Got a nice tour of the plane and piano bar in coach thanks to a neighbor who knew I loved planes.
Shortest 747 flight:
747-122 1988 UA OAK
(took flight as part of round-trip to qualify for triple miles all year with MileagePlus)
747 flight to nowhere:
747-100 or -200 1988 CO LAX
-LAX originally scheduled as LAX
, but turned around near Denver due to engine shutdown. Also first time at the remote gates at LAX
, as they off-loaded us while the mechanics opened up the cowling to look at it while they decided if it could be repaired to resume our flight or not.
Most interesting in-air 747 sighting:
Late 80's while flying LGW
on Transavia, the pilot pointed out a 747 nearby that had just departed LHR
(I believe it was PIA), and was dumping fuel over the Channel. The 747 was leaving a long dark trail that almost looked like light smoke.
