US To Europe - Connect Through Zurich Or LHR?

Sun Feb 06, 2005 11:12 am

I will be flying from Texas to Germany this spring, and will fly AUS-DFW-STR to Germany. On the way back, I have a choice: STR-ZRH-DFW-AUS or STR-LHR-DFW-AUS.

I've never been to Zurich or London Heatrow; which would you perfer to connect through?

Well, depends on what you want.

Heathrow Pros: Very busy, awesome shopping, heaven for spotters wanting to see exotic airlines.
Heathro Cons: Very busy, chances of delays much higher, guranteed time spent in a holding pattern on the way in, crowded, switching terminals a pain.

Zurich Pros: Smaller Airport, not congested, easy to find your way around.
Zurich Cons: Smaller Airport, not as much shopping/amenities, not as many exotic aircraft.

If you want a quick and painless transfer, I'd recommend Zurich. If you want to see the busiest international airport in the world and possibly some exotic planes go for Heathrow. Personally on a flight that long, I'd opt for Zurich just for the sake of simplicity ...

Last time I connected at Zurich, we had buses to and from the terminal. Spent more time on the buses than in the terminal... the only advantage of buses is that you get to see the outside of the plane.

[LHR] "guranteed time spent in a holding pattern on the way in"

I've probably been in a holding pattern maybe twice in the dozens of times I flown into there. That's from all directions at all times of day. It's a myth that most planes hold. Think about it logically - the holds would get full up if most planes did that.
