Do You Remember Your First RJ Flight?

Mon Feb 07, 2005 3:02 pm

Back when RJs were first introduced in the US (must have been, what, around 1996?) I remember being very excited at being one of the first to fly them. It was an American Eagle ERJ flight from ORD-CLE, and I remember being intrigued at the idea of flying in what some were billing as a corporate jet in an airline configuration.

Once onboard, I was struck by how narrow the 1+2 configuration was, and how low the ceiling was. Other than that, to an airplane-obsessed middle schooler, I thought it was darn cool!

Do you remember your first RJ flight and your reaction?

Of course, nowadays we lament the proliferation of those beasts...

yup, 'twasn't too long ago 2 yrs. ago AZ FCO-MUC ERJ 145. One of the most comfortable rides I've had, I would rather fly on that thing for 4 hours than a 737 any day. First prop ever was last year on a DH4.

CRJ on Delta/Comair MCO-FLL-MCO in late 2002. I sat in the back, what a rush when that rocket took off.

I flew from FAT-SLC with Skywest in December of 2001. I believe that was the first time on an RJ for me. I liked the experience, although I prefer larger jets over RJs.

Was on a CVG-MSP segment on an OH CRJ back in 1998. Had no idea what a Canadair Regional Jet was. Got to the terminal and was kind of frightened to get on such a "little" plane. Was not too full, sat next to a guy who got some great deal on a SEA-CVG-MSP routing to go home and visit his family. Took off, had plenty of power, had great sounding GE engines, was interesting to see how well the lone flight attendant handled the whole aircraft. Ended up going through a thunderstorm and the airplane handled it quite well! I was really used to taking the usual old (very old) NW DC9 ATL-MSP but this time found myself taking DL ATL-CVG-MSP and ended up on a very new, advanced aircraft with those huge winglets this time. Had a nice chat with the pilots afterwards, was absolutely struck by the all-glass cockpit! Apparently that ship was just a few months old. The captain said he had flown one with about 100 hrs on it just a few days ago and that they were buying these airplanes like there was no tomorrow. Boarded the plane in doubt - deplaned the aircraft a believer!

Ironically, I would end up with a job working with RJ's just a few years later. While I like the CRJ, the ERJ has won my heart lately  Big grin

I've only been on two RJ flights in my entire life:

Both CRJs on the ORD-FAR (Fargo, ND) and FAR-ORD portions of a LGA-ORD-FAR-ORD-EWR round trip with Skywest/United Express. It was pretty good, but they kicked us off the plane from FAR-ORD because of weight problems when weather rolled into ORD and delays started cropping up, forcing us to stay overnight in Fargo (which was quite dull, except for the pain-in-the-ass tornado warning that we woke up to in the morning).  Sad

I fly another pair of Skywest/United Express CRJs this weekend from FAR-DEN and back.

I've also been on a Mesaba Avro RJ85 from GFK (Grand Forks, ND)-MSP, but I'm not really sure if that counts. I really want to fly on an ERJ, but so far they have eluded me....

I have been on 2 RJ flights. They were both in March 2004 (a report about the trip is in the Trip report forum). The first segment was OK, but the second time I stepped into the OH CRJ, I had just come off a B767-400 so I really noticed how small and hard the seats were! I still enjoyed the flights though. Really nice planes  Smile
Now I just need to get on an ERJ!

My first ERJ145 ride was on KLM exel from Maastricht to Munich, in April 2001.

First CRJ ride was on Lufthansa CityLine from Munich to Amsterdam, in September 2001.

Comparing these two, I think the ERJ is more comfortable but the CRJ is a nicer aircraft.

If a BAe146 is valid also, that would be on Air UK from Rotterdam to Stansted in May 1996. Not my favourite.

My first RJ flight was two years ago on February 1, 2003. A morning LAX-PHX flight on a Skywest (United Express) CRJ-200. Sadly, this flight was memorable because the Space Shuttle Columbia had broken up in the atmosphere above just prior to our departure. We weren't aware of what happened until we landed in PHX.

DUS-MXP on an Alitalia Embraer 145, one of the best flights I ever had. First prop flight was DTM-FRA on EW, can not say that I enjoyed it very much, these ATR's are a major pain in the a$$.

My fist CRJ flight was supposed to have happend in europe on Tyrolean Airways crj to vienna. I was very excited, I board the bus that takes you to the plane still happy then as we come around the corner I look and I say what the hell is that? It was a Dash8-300. I guess they had a plane change cause in the ticket it said a crj. Incidentaly that was my first prop flight.

A year later I flew the CRJ900 on mesa and I can honestly say it was one of the best flights that I've had in a while. It was nice and quiet and I noticed it handeled turbulence a little differently, I guess because of the rear engines. How often does you head almost tuch the ceiling of the airplane when you board it? Every chance I get I try to fly a crj.

I've been on the following RJ:

MXP/BRU/MXP with SN ARJ (very nice flight...);

MXP/HAM/MXP with LH Cityline CRJ-100;

MXP/BUD with Malev F70

MXP/ZRH with Swiss ERJ-145 (fantastic scenarios over Swiss Alps!)

ZRH/CPH, same a/c and same airliner.

Early September 2001 (pre-9/11) US Express (Trans States) EMB-145 PIT-TOL. Comfortable seats, good window view. The smaller size of these jets was noticed when we encountered some turbulence while on approach to TOL.

During that experience, I joking stated to the passenger next to me, "Is a means of preparing someone for one of the roller coaster rides at Cedar Point?"  Laugh out loud

Summer of 1999. ORD-FAR on an Air Wisconsin RJ. Never got off the ground though.... because of weather just west of ORD. Sat on the taxi way for a good 2 hours before going back to gate for "more fuel." A United frequent flier seated next to me said they were going to cancel the flight... not get more fuel. Sure enough- he was right.

My first 'real' RJ flight was again on Air Wisconsin from FAR-DEN after my visit at University of North Dakota was complete.

Great flight... still have the briefing card!

I remember mine. It was with HPX (Mesa) in October 2003. I was terrified as I was 25 years old at the time and I seemed older than the entire crew - pilots and flight attendants. Besides the age of the crew and the drunk girl in the back heckling the flight attendans during the safety demo, the flight was quite nice. It was much smoother than I thought it would be and rather quiet.

American Eagle, BDL-RDU, ERJ135, Nov 2002. Found it startlingly tight when entering, but then found it quite unique and a nice ride once we got going. My mom had a nice reaction on the flight back up, another 135, she was convinced the plane was smaller than when we flew down! I've flown others since, 145s, CRJs, EMB170s, and have loved every flight.

My first trip on a RJ was an AE RJ135 LGA-ORF-LGA in 2000. I was very nervous during taxi and take off because all the other jets looked so large on the ramp. But after take off the flt seemed as if I were aboard a DC9. I avoid RJ's if possible but wont avoid them totally. The best one I've been on was an AE CR7 from DFW-HOU in 2003. I remember a nice quiet take off.

RJ-145, on AA, LGA-STW, 1/29/04. Last flight from NYC area to Detroit that day. Is kinda tight inside, but for a short flight (less than 2 hours), and if the flight not full, and not too much carryons by me and others, then not bad - better then an ATR or some noisy, cramped prop job.

My first was a Comair CRJ-200 from Wichita to Cincinnati in the late 90's. What really impressed me was that we went up to FL 410 to go over a thunderstorm. I was surprised that this small jet had that capability.

Quite a few RJ's since then. I much prefer the ERJ's over the CRJ's, but by far my favorite RJ is the 146/RJ85 series. Very comfortable and roomy inside, and I love those high wings with 4 engines hanging from them!

Back in 1996 (if I remember well) it was a RJ/BAE146 Air UK
from AMS to London City. The flight was smooth but the crew had to shut down 1 of the 4 engines due to a technical
problem!!! But I guess, no danger at any moment, let's call it routine emergency Big grin

July 1999, Skywest CRJ SLC-SNA, last flight of the day. Me and my mother had seats in the last row right beside the lav. Was a rather smooth flight, routed over Vegas, offering some nice views. Seats already felt cramped back then, even though I was a bit shorter then. Was surprised by the acceleration and fast take-off and climb. The pilot made a smooth landing in SNA, after an uneventful flight
