Short Haul Business Class

Tue Mar 01, 2005 6:02 am

Have any of you travelled in bmi or ba's business class in Europe? Which product do you think is superior and is it worth the extra price for such a relatively short trip.Is there any business class within europe on other carriers that you prefer?
Your comments would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Business class on short haul is a waste of money, particularly in Europe. The main difference on BA (other than a rapid, not bad meal) is the head-rest cover that says, "Club Europe"! Save your pennies and don't bother unless it's a free upgrade, part of a long haul ticket or your company has amazing discounts. Haven't yet flown BMI.

If you are paying for it, then the difference is probably not worth it -- except if you are comparing it to full fare economy, in which case do it because of the miles/status points (depending on factors)

the product itself is only worth it on some of the longer sectors like LHR-Athens. I have flown it to Athens and the meal service killed the entire flight time, so felt like the flight took about one hour, rather than 3:15!

Not a waste of money if your flying in an international aircraft on a domestic route, when all domestic aircraft are all economy  Smile

As has been said by others, if you're paying its not worth it. If the company pays then its worth it for a business lounge, ff points, etc. If its a short sector like LHR-BRU you just about get time to scoff your food before landing. (and the food is not really anything to get that excited about).

As for the space, you won't notice any difference to be honest. Often the only difference is that they will leave the middle seat empty in business class - in fact depending on the demand at differnet times of the day, they will shift the curtain backwards or forwards using the same seats for economy or business to match the tickets sold on the flight.

I wouldn't say short haul business is a waste unless you are a budget conscious traveller and would presume that paying the extra is likely to give you luxury. It is a little more comfortable and doesn't hold a candle to longhaul business

The main differences are business check-in and lounge access (status pax get this anyway). I usually do around four to six returns in shorthaul business a year, usually on BA Club Europe and what I notice is the divider is brought back so that hardly any Euro Traveller passengres have a seat free beside them. However in Club Europe it is possible to have a party!

The food is usually a lot better too. Here is an evening meal I got on a recent flight.

Compare with what looks like plastic wrapping cardboard boxes with food hidden onside (take a look on airlinemeals.net)

For me paying the extra for short haul business is worth the miles and points alone, however it is a more comfortable way, not luxurious way to travel.

Interesting someone mentions longhaul a/c on shorthaul flight. One of my friends who sometimes posts here flew out to Lisbon during Euro 2004 and a longhaul 747 was subbed due to increase in demand and he got a seat in First both ways for just over £200  Big thumbs up
