Favorite 4-Engine Prop

Wed Mar 02, 2005 1:02 pm

I would really like to fly on a (4) engine propeller airplane someday. Is there any that fly commercially? What is your favorite (4) engine prop?

My favorite, although you probably won't be flying one anytime soon.

i remember seeing these at stansted in the early 80s.

Also noteable are viscounts, electras (saw one on saturday overflying the M6!!!) and the beautiful connie (remember one of the last flying in world turning up at a mildenhall airshow in the early 80s from USAF keflavik, what a head turner those planes were)

p.s. thanks titch for opening my eyes to the il-18, what a beauty!!

whoops I just saw four engines, some would argue that turboprops are "Prop-jets" since they have a turbine core.....hhmmmmmm

The Lockheed L.1049G Constellation. Hands down one of the most eye-pleasing airliners ever built.

Got to be C-130 Hercules, went up on one from RAF Lyneham when I was in the Territorial Army, it was a training flight and done several touchdowns/take off's, brilliant, unsurprisingly my friend was a little air sick.
When in doubt give it a clout

I always liked the Dash-7.
I was booked on a Pan Am Express Dash-7 that cancelled and they put us on a 727 to DCA instead.
Does anyone still fly the Dash-7?

Wow, Madaboutdeltic,

Had totally forgot about Heavylift, with their Belfast's and Hercules', remember spotting these in the late 70's early 80's, when Stansted was a darn sight smaller and quieter than it is now, when the terminal was a long shed and freight ruled!.

My Fav 4 engine prop has got to be either the Constellation or the C130, the Constellation, beauty personified, with the 3 tails and the sleek lines. The Hercules, the ugly duckling that stayed ugly, but, developed a roar, a distinct following and a dependability that swayed many a Government.

Tie between the Boeing 377 or the Douglas Seven Seas (DC-7). However, the Lockheed Starliner and Connie series are close competitors.
