Busiest Domestic Route In Your Country

Thu Mar 03, 2005 1:59 am

Hi,

What is the busiest domestic route in your country or in countries you know?

For Germany I guess it's FRA-TXL or FRA-MUC.

Hi Tobi, hope you're well.

Although I don't have the figures, in the UK I'm pretty sure LHR-EDI has the most passengers, with LHR-GLA not far behind. LHR to MAN, BHD and ABZ are also very busy routes.

Well in the U.S. we have a few I can think of:

MIA/FLL/PBI - JFK/LGA/EWR

NYC - LAX

JFK/LGA/EWR - SJU

MIA/FLL - SJU

(before people ask and Im sure some will not know this but all though Puerto Rico is a territory of the U.S. and in the Caribbean, it is considered a domestic route  Wink/being sarcastic )

Counting the number of flights and the aircraft flying on that route it would have to bee VIE-INN.

In Spain that would be Madrid-Barcelona, the "air bridge" currently served by Iberia, Air Europa, Spanair and Vueling.

In Portugal, Lisbon-Oporto.

In Italy, Rome-Milan.

In Turkey, Istanbul-Ankara.

In Thailand it would either be Bangkok-Phuket or BKK-Chiang Mai, although I think it´s probably the first.

Indeed a very busy route. Didn't think about it.
There aren't a lot of differences between all these routes at LH. Predominatly hourly service with some exceptions. All are mainly on A320/A321/B737 and sometime on A300.

With other airlines includet HAM-MUC can be the winner  Smile
I think between FRA-TXL/MUC are no serious competitors.

In Holland it is either AMS-EIN or AMS-MST, and those routes aren't very busy either... Both two daily KLM Cityhopper flights I believe...

Malaysia:-

Kuala Lumpur-Kuching
14x DAILY Malaysia Airlines (B734 or A330 or B772)
7x DAILY Air Asia (B733)

This is the only means of transport between West Malaysia & Malaysian Borneo, separated by the South China Sea. There's no passenger ferry service.

In the western U.S., at one time the busiest route used to be LAX-SFO. With the advent of other airports in both metro areas, I don't know if this is still the busiest.

From my home airport, I would say SAN-PHX - there are numerous flights on HP and WN all day. LAS is also heavy on California-Southern Nevada flights, again on HP and WN.

There are a few other US domestic routes to be considered:
ATL-LAX
ORD-LAX
ATL-NYC
ORD-NYC
DCA/BWI/IAD-NYC (though Amtrak is cutting into this a bit with their Metroliner and Acela services)

LAX-SFO now has fewer O&D pax than LAX-OAK. If you mean LA-area to SF-area, then yes, that could be the busiest US "route", depending on how many airports you include.

Levent, you beat me two it! "The Puenta a Barcelona" has to be the most profitabal route in Spain. But once the AVE tracks are built conecting Madrid and Barcelona not quiet sure what will happen. Another good route is Madrid to the Canary Islands.

In the states I think that in New York its NYC-LAX/SFO.

It would have to be NAS-FPO. Anything else wouldn't make sense if you look at the size of the settlements and airports.

I think BCN-PMI would be the second one after MAD-BCN. As far as I know IB, UX, JK, VY and AB operate this route.

Madrid-Canary Islands has a lot of huge widebodies (300+ seaters) with IB, and its served by other airlines with 150 seaters, so its very busy compared with BCN-PMI which is only served by narrowbodies.

SYD-MEL as mentioned by OzGlobal. I think it ranks in the top 3 domestically in the world. QF and DJ have flights during day every 30 mins approx doing the route.

Judging by the number of flights available, the busiest UK domestic routes are as follows:

  • London (all airports) to Edinburgh - up to 39 daily flights
  • London (all airports) to Glasgow - up to 28 daily flights
  • London (LGW and LHR) to Manchester - up to 19 daily flights

In the UK, LON-EDI by a fair bit, even between specific airports it would probably remain as LHR-EDI.

You forgot about Scotairways then? It brings the EDI total up to about 45 approx, I'm guessing?

Absolutely correct, but I have given up with bmi's website as "errors" always occur when trying to load their timetables, so I do not know how many flight rotations that they operate.

In Germany, CGN-TXL/SXF is also very busy: about 28 flights a day. There are four airlines operating this route (LH, 4U, X3 and DI).
