Best economy: Austrian Airlines
Best safety: A lot of safe airlines out there (I don't know about BA anymore with their recent 744 engine problems)
Best business: Virgin Atlantic upper class suites (I don't know if that covers business?  confused  )

Here are my thoughts:

A.) One of the best international economy classes I have been on was US Airways A330

B.) ATA has a great safety record

C.) I would have to say the best business is CO when Gordon Bethune was called in for the rescue.

Take Care!

Here are my answers and I suggest to read the article I posted after answer "B)". Note: When there is more then answer after letter the first airline is not necessarily better.

A) United Airlines (Economy Plus)
Singapore Airlines
Air New Zealand (A320)

B) Qantas (perfect since 1980)

Source for answer "B)": http://www.salon.com/tech/col/smith/...05/02/18/askthepilot124/index.html

C)Japan Airlines - JAL (777-200ER)
Emirates (A340-500)

I decided to post the folowing photos so you can see how great these airline seats really are.

A shot of United's Economy Plus (not great seats, but look at that pitch):

SQ has consistently been the best for me so far. The 777ER in particular has an excellent pitch and width.

Best economy for me
* normal economy: NZ and CX
* economy plus: BA

Best business class: was CP for me

safety? Many airlines are without any fatal incident, which doesn't mean that many airlines with just very few incidents over many years (for various reasons) are less safe. I wouldn't dare naming one over another...

About A), I would add another criterion, and that would be seat width. Legroom is definitely key in long-haul comfort, but so is decent shoulder- and elbow-room.

2nd class in most French trains offers better seat width than your average Y in a 747, 340 or 777... But with a 56$ barrel, I guess today's not the day airlines will be looking to pack less people in their aircrafts...

Cathay Pacific or South African Airways. I can't decide which. I really honestly love them both.

My rankings:

Best economy
1. Tie between CX and SA-29/30
2. SQ-28/30
3. BA-27/30
4. Tie between JL, KA, and MH-25/30
5. Tie between AA, CO and TK-24/30

Best safety:

1. Tie between CX, SA, BA and LY-30/30
2. SQ-29/30
3. Tie between JL, VS, KA and MH-28/30
4. CO-25/30
5. AF-23/30

Best business-I've only flown CX, JL and SQ biz, all were great, and I've seen, not been on, SA's luxurious C.

QF,SQ,CX for me are the best airlines overall!

SQ is horrible in Y on the B744 seems worse than the the other two even though seat pitch is the same.

QF is the safest airline!

QF and SQ for me in J! The QF skybed is better though!

Even if you haven't flown a non-US airline in J, simply looking at the VS, BA and QF products here or on their websites will tell you otherwise...

Can you honestly say that AA is the safest without lying to yourself? I believe they have had more accidents then any other major U.S. airline.

Best legroom:
That's hard to say because I find it varies between a/c types even in the same airline. For example LH's 747's are cramped whereas their A340's are very roomy. So, based on the airlines I've been on, I'd have to say LH or AC.

Best Safety:
From the airlines I've flown I'd have to say AC or LH.

AA is the best Airline whether it be about service or leg room they are the best.

AA when they had the MRTC program. Now, that is gone, you feel much better in a sarcophagus. And even more, according to other thread, they [AA] will be adding more seats by removing the galley.

UA is much better in this regard. As well as LA.

Best safety: A bunch of them. But nothing compared with ElAl. Not even AA.

Best business: Singapore, Cathay, Qantas, Lan.

"(I don't know about BA anymore with their recent 744 engine problems)"

BA will never put in risk passenger safety.

True. And you could generalize that to "people". I do not see BA, nor any other ICAO carrier, putting lives, whether they be crew, passengers, ground service, etc., at risk.

Airlines have to co-operate with each other since any single accident inflicts terrible damage to the entire industry.

I can only comment on airlines that I've flown with:

1: Air New Zealand 744.....I'm cheating a little here because on my flight from LHR to LAX I happened to blag the seat next to the door Big grin...but no such luck on the rest of my flights

2: American Airlines... Stuck on the deck for two hours at ORD while they fixed one of the generators.

3: American Airlines... Got an upgrade to business for flight to BHX.....although my Brother in Law swears by Emirates
