NW Or KAL For JFK-HKG

Tue Mar 15, 2005 9:31 am

Hi everyone I searched the trip reports for the comparison but couldn't get an answer. I have an upcoming HKG trip on April, and being a skyteam client I have the option of taking KAL from JFK to HKG via ICN(744/773) or taking NW via NRT(744) I have never flown on either airline, and considering I am going to upgrade to business/first class what would you guys recommend? Who has better service, seats etc.I know the KAL option is longer in duration but I wouldn't mind it if there is considerable difference between the two airlines performance. Your suggestions are highly appreciated.

Personally I would opt for NW more for the sake of the seat than anything else. If you are going to fly Business/First, I think NW may be a better choice. I normally go for Asian airlines given the choice but having experienced NW's WBC product I have a lot of compliments. Korean Air will certainly have much better service and food but rather mediocre seats and entertainment. NW will have decent service with OK food with great seats and excellent entertainment.

It really depends what is more important for you, service or seats? I have a trip report from WBC in the TR section that you could always use to research with.

Is the Morning Calm Class on KE not good? The meals I think would be better than NW. But I think overall, NW would be better. I flew with both of these carriers before but the new seats that they have on WBC are impressive; yet, might be biased because I never flew on KE's C class.

Definitely Northwest! WBC seats are awesome, and on the upper deck, which gives it a very quiet, "private airliner" sort of feel... and you're almost guaranteed to be on time!  Wink

I will take Korean's service over NW anytime. However, for my safety i will take NW over korean.

BTW, why not try ANA or JAL?

NW if you like the new lie-flat seats at an angle. KE for everything else.

Prefer flying on Skyteam Carriers due to Heavy mileage accumulated over the years flying Delta and just cannot resist the upgrade on such a long flight. I would like to fly ANA sometime in the future though I heard their business/first is amazing. Thanks for your suggestion.

Since you are flying from NYC to HKG and need a SkyTeam airline, why would you not consider the EWR - HKG non stop Continental flight? Are you perchance flying on Thursday?

Doesn't CO charge a ridiculous upgrade fee nowadays at least for NonePass?

You don't know how many times I changed my mind about doing that, but I live in Long Island basically 15 minutes away from JFK. I would love to take the T7 nonstop with CO from EWR but its just a major hassle to get there so I decided against it. Thanks for the suggestion COEWR787.

I know that feeling Gokmengs. I have the opposite situation. I live 15 mins from EWR and I knwo what a hassle it is to get to JFK from here  smile  .

Thats the reason that I will most likely be taking the SQ EWR - SIN non-stop instead of the TG JFK - BKK non-stop to get to SE Asia later this summer, even though the SQ flight will cost me a couple hundred more. But then it costs me $150 in car service to get to JFK against $30 to EWR.  Sad

I completely agree and its not only how much you spend on the car service but the duration of the car ride to the airport especially in the tri-state area it could be longer than a connecting flight option Smile Plus wouldn't you rather take SQ instead of TG anyway(considering that the connection is not horrible) I took SQ from IST to SIN raffles class and it was amazing, and I flew coach with them once on the same route that was very good too. I don't know about TG though.

Regarding CO's nonstop from EWR, although it is definitely more of a drag to drive to EWR than it is to go to JFK, I think that the possible problems that could arise from having to connect in NRT are not worth the time savings to go out of JFK.

What if your flight from JFK leaves late? Sure, you can be rebooked on to a later HKG flight, but then you are stuck at NRT for a longer amount of time. If you were on the CO nonstop, if you were delayed, you wouldn't have anything to worry about (other than getting to HKG later, but that would have happened anyway even if you were leaving out of JFK).

What if there is some problem at NRT? Weather, a mechanical delay on your second flight, etc. are all issues whose chances of you experiencing double when you have to take a connection.

Finally, I believe that the CO flight leaves from EWR somewhere around 11 AM or noon. At that time of day, traffic wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue as it would if you were leaving at, say 9 AM.

Cory6188,

I know your a HUGE fan of CO, but there is no need to sell the airline like they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. If he has decided on JFK and NW/KE, let him be. In my opinion NW is far from the worst alternative out there. I do a lot of flying with NW/CO and partners and I personally would opt for NW out of JFK rather than CO out of EWR. I however would probably have opted for Malaysian from EWR instead of either NW, CO or KE as I find them to offer a supperior product.

What about flying out west to Cali, and than pick up a flight from there.

It is logical thinking but NW flight is a stopover. iT continues with the same aircraft after refueling and dropping pax to NRT.

I don't know if you live in the New York area but Long Island to EWR is a trip no matter what time of the day. As a matter of fact the traffic wouldn't be as bad as 11 A.M. but believe me its a long trip regardless, but I truly appreciate the suggestion and I know it does make sense to go non-stop with CO but that is if you live close to Newark. People in this area prefers JFK or LGA.

SR 103, in response to your comment regarding my comment (okay now that sounds redundant, doesn't it?), yes, you're right, I am a fan of CO. However, I was simply looking at it from a logistical standpoint.

If CO was the one flying from JFK-NRT-HKG and NW was doing the EWR-HKG nonstop, I would recommend the NW nonstop. I just think it makes sense to do the nonstop regardless of who is flying it. The fact that CO is doing is a coincidence.

If someone lived in IAH and wanted to go to STT, I would say to fly AA through MIA rather than CO through EWR. It doesn't make sense to go out of your way if you don't have to.

It is an option but its just not something I would prefer to do, but don't you think its a shame that no Skyteam carrier offers JFK-HKG non stop? I mean its a popular route.I think I'm going to go with NW from JFK on this one.

If you are flying J class why not go with AF. Eventho the trip would be about 1.5 hours longer the Service on AF in J is much better than NW and maybe KAL(never flown with them)

Its just a suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion but I flown AF J class and wasn't impressed with it at all, a discussion like this just started on a new thread.

Whilst I would not normally recommend US carriers due to service and product standards, and whilst all airlines are safe when comapared to other modes of transport, KE has a bad habit of losing 747's that would make me avoid them vigorously (if you don't believe me, check the database on AirDisaster.com).
When all's said and done, there'll be more said than done.

I believe you and that was an issue for me to because it came to my mind, regardless I already booked NW WBC, so I can't wait to fly and test it for the first time. Thanks all that replied and helped me with my decision.

Absolutely NW. Flew into NRT on their 744.
