Rename Your Home Airport

Thu Mar 17, 2005 1:30 pm

If you could give your airport a name, say if it's just XXXXX International/Regional/National/Municipal airport, what would you change it to.

For SLC I'd say Scott Matheson International Airport.

Let's change "Newark Liberty International Airport" back to "Newark International." Inserting "Liberty" to me has always seemed to be a facade of empty patriotism - sounds great, but what does it mean? Thank goodness, the folks at Port Authority at least had the decency to retain the "Newark" moniker, sparing the good people of this troubled but emerging city another black eye.

Just my two centavos.

Change AKL - Auckland Intl Airport into

Helengrad Intl Airport

Quoting SLC1 (Thread starter):
International/Regional/National/Municipal airport

What exactly is the difference between National/Regional/Municipal....aren't they
all either International and Regional?

I would name London's airports after great British Prime Ministers as follows:

LHR would be London Winston Churchill International  yes
LGW would be London Margaret Thatcher International  idea

Perhaps Stansted could be renamed London Pe@rson Airport just on this website!  blush

Sky Harbor International is a great name and when they tried to change it to Barry Goldwater Intl., the whole town went ballistic. He got a terminal named after him instead. Keep Sky Harbor the same. It's unique.

This may seem silly, but why is BOM called Mumbai airport and not Bombay airport when the code stands for BOM?

I would change Bangkok Don Muang to Bangkok Bhumibol Adulyadej International Airport, after the Thai King!

CPH - Copenhagen Airport should be renamed to Ellehammer International Airport. After Jacob Ellehammer, the Danish aviation pioneer.
BTW he invented the radial engine and the first one ever made still works!

Funny, I was thinking about this earlier this morning. Three possibilities came to mind for renaming PHL:

1. Benjamin Franklin International Airport (obvious historical choice)

2. Frank Rizzo International Airport (former-mayor of Phila.)

3. Edward G. Rendell International Airport (former-mayor of Phila. & current Governor of Pennsylvania)

4. Dick Clark International Airport (Phila. was where American Bandstand was filmed)

Renamings of PHL we definitely WON'T see.

1. Mumia Abu-Jamal International Airport

2. Grace Kelly International Airport

3. Delaware Valley International Airport (a similar renaming worked for ABE, but I don't think would fly (no pun intended) here)

4. W. Wilson Goode International Airport

5. Ira Einhorn International Airport

I could go on-and-on.

While it's not my home airport, I always have thought that LIT should be renamed William Clinton Int'l, after Slick Willy, of course.

As for my home airport, SYR. I find that Syracuse Hancock Int'l is very fitting, but I wouldn't mind it becoming Greater Syracuse Regional Airport, or something to that effect. It's not like we have international flights or anything  Wink.

I like O'Hare International Airport (ORD). It's obviously unique and to me it's a very fitting name for a large airport. I find it classy and it has come to represent Chicago Aviation in many ways.

To me ORD is like a second home; I have always felt comfortable and excited in the terminals and since young ages I have awed at the hustle-bustle of the airport, gawked at the modern UA terminal and have stooped in amazement as a 747-436 in the colors of British Airways has sprung to life and soared off a mile long runway into blue skies. I truly love O'Hare, from the aggravating security to the comfortable UA Red Carpet Club! It marks the start of an interest that I have had in airlines and airliners for as long as I can remember... So I say, keep the name!

Thanks,

FWA (Fort Wayne International/Baer Field) (Fort Wayne, IN):

If renamed (and made into a hub for Smith Airways), it would be:
FJS (KFJS)--Francis Joel Smith International Airport

Hub for Smith Airways (747-200, 747SP, 787, A380)

Just a thought.

Ronaldsway just has to be Jobsworth Regional!!!!!!!!

The baggage handlers get paid more than the check in staff, the management are more interested in making money than operating a proper airport and no one seems to realise that an airport is for travelling, not for giving some lazy bugger a job!

LBA- "Jimmy Saville International" (shell suits compulsory at check-in)

HUY would officially become a Dutch enclave (since there is already a close bond between the two) and prosper under its new guise of "Humberside-Nederlands" with KL opening a new intercontinental hub due to its quiet airspace and relieve congestion at AMSBig grin

I can tell you that CLE will NEVER be "The Michael R. White International Airport."

How about for CLE:
"Carl Stokes International Airport" -- for our city's first African-American mayor, and the first of a U.S. major city
"Garrett Morgan International Airport" -- for the inventor of the gas mask and traffic light
"Bob Hope International Airport" -- he was born here
"Elliot Ness International Airport" -- for the legendary crimefighter
"Siegel-Shuster International Airport" -- for the inventors of Superman
Up, up and away!

I've never been too fond of the name Sea-Tac. A hyphenated airport? We need a name with a Western Washington flavor to it--something like Jimi Hendrix International! Knowing us, though, we would probably sell out to some corporation and it would turn out to be something like Qwest Airport or something.

To answer B742's question:

I think I remember from when I was studying India in 6th grade that Mumbai was the name for the city which, when England colonized, became Bombay. I could have it the other way around, but you British people should know it better than an American Student like me!

About my "home" airport, I think TVC (currently Traverse City Cherry Capital) should just be Traverse City Capital. Since Washington (the state) is getting close to Michigan in cherry farming, I don't think that name will work for long.

Hope I helped,

Are you out of your mind? I wouldn't change the name of BOG airport at all, not even think to change it to the name of of current "presidentico". No airport, bridge, etc, etc, etc should be named after a living person, not to mention that our current president has done Nothing for our city. If I had to change the name of our airport it would be Bogotá Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada Intl. Airport, but I don't like airports named after people. I just love "El Dorado".
