Filthy Planes, What Was Your Worst?

Fri Mar 18, 2005 12:12 pm

Mine was Pan Am #1 LAX-BKK back in 1982, still can't get over it! Flight was a RTW route, and had been getting later at every stop, SO cleaning was out of the question... The floor looked like one of those funky wino cabs like you get at Detroit in the winter, Oh Sweet Jesus!! And the smell of puke, bowel gas and baby milk spilled every place, not to mention the black caked on dirt that started out as a red carpet before the stampede, was truly a sight! My wonderful F/A was grabbing up cans of air freshener and spraying with both hands at the same time. I was wondering just how much time and trouble it takes to do a shampoo on a plane? Has anyone ever had this kind of experience?

HP from PHX-Denver on the weekend before thanksgiving. That 732 wad disgraceful to HP. There were pieces of food and crap flying around in little air devils when I turned the air up high. The ads that are on HP 732's were all sticky and was like putting your hand in sticky puddy. My mom had to pry her coke off of it. The smell was bad, however it wasn't helped by the fact that at the gate, the A/C wasn't working until the engines started or something like that, and the APU was providing us with pristine exhaust air! Never again will a set food on another HP 732 (but aren't there only two left?)

The worst ever was little droplets of coffee left on my tray table from the previous flight. I asked the flight attendant for a cloth to wipe it down and she was back in seconds and did it for me, apolgising for having missed cleaning my tray. That was on a Qantas A330. I fly mostly domestically within Australia and that was the worst I've experienced. Not bad, eh?

Basically, any Southwest plane I've ever flown in. Once I sat down in my seat, and when I got up to go to the lavatory mid-flight, I realized I had sat in some old gum that someone had stuck to the seat and hadn't been scraped off.

Too often there's been trash sticking out of the seat back pockets...another time I reached in to get the inflight magazine and found a half-eaten piece of chocolate that was melting and had gotten all over everything, including my hands.

Its a freakin disgrace. Clean up your cabins, WN!

This is all another reason why I only fly Southwest if its a last resort and I've exhausted all other options. IMO, you get what you pay for.

My worst was pretty much old AA 757 with sticky tray tables and torn carpetting (NON-TWA versions) if it was ex/TWA, that would be a clean plane, and AirAsia sure was filthy and I found a TIGER BEER can in the pocket! oh made me think of the typical BUD Id find in an Southwest pocket

Mine was on a NW A320 from MCO-MSP.

I like NW but this plane was very dirty inside. The cabin floor wasn't very clean but it was acceptable...it was the walls of the cabin that were bad. Black marks over the windows, needed a cleaning pretty bad.

That was my first flight on an A320 so I'd been looking forward to it. Was kinda bummed at how dirty it was.

I guess grubby planes are the consequence of budget cuts and demoralised staff.

ATA L-1011 Tristar. Faded colours, loose panels, stinky like a meetingroom of Philip Morris. And it took more than an hour to close a door.

AMC 737-200. Bloody awful, overpainted seals and rust-streaks around the doorsill!

I'm pretty lucky, worst was a jetBlue A320 flying from New York to Burlington, pizza sauce on a towel and some crayons on the tray. Otherwise I've been fairly fortunate, WN was decent, no complaints. Cleanest was a new jetBlue A320, or pretty much any trans-atlantic flight before boarding.

The experience I had was somewhat unusual on a Saudi Flight from Rhyad to Jedda in 1995 - on the rear section of the Lockeed Tristar in front of the toilets some people excremented in front of the toilets....
They seemingly where asians beeing expelled and did not know how to use aircraft toilets...
The shame is on the crew who apparently did not assist those people to evolve in an enviremnt uncommon to them.

I will never ever fly Saudi in my life -....

The worst airplane I ever flew on was a Republic Airlines DC-9 that flew from ATL to Pensacola, FL. Horrible little airplane, everything was dirty and unkept. It was so bad I passed on the beverage service, fearing dirty cups/glasses. There were even coffee stains on the walls, the carpet was a mess and the seats looked like they had been on that plane for 100 years. I never flew that airline after that.  coffee

My worst was a Tower Air 741 (or it might have been a 742) from JFK to ORY. Lav fluid seeping from the lav to the floor under my seat is not something that I really wanted to have happen.

May that airline rot in pieces.

I have heard a lot of bad stories about Ghana Airways DC-10s, when they were flying. Never been in them myself tho.

Sadly, it is more often the passengers who are to blame, than the airline.

Without a doubt no one comes close to having there planes as filthy as Southwest. Southwest own policy of quick turning EVERY plane leads directly to there number one ranking in my book.
As stated in and earlier post"you get what you pay for". On Southwest that is a smelly dirty plane ride. And that is why I will not even non-rev. on there planes.  vomit

Four times the Ryanair Boeing 737-300 (ex Buzz). Bubblegum nearly everywhere and in the safetycards, dirty and more than used seats...but we landed safely.

I fly Saudi Arabian every month between Europe and Southern India, and I always apprieciate the good service and I can say that the 777-200 are clean in general, even the toilets.

Like with most airlines you have good and bad flights, including a clean cabin - or not. My worst experiences were 737-200s of Ryanair, 747-200 and 737-200 of Air Madagascar, and recently a 767 of Air Canada. But by far the worst was a 727 of Olympic - it was beyond description (the flight on their A300 wasn't much better).

BUT as bad as it all sounds, out of my close to 300 flights, the vast majority were good experiences, and I truly appreciate the work of the flight attendants - it's not easy to cope with people of all walks of life, including their ideas of "clean" and comfortable. I have never been disappointed by CX, LH, BA, NZ and many more.

Regarding "you get what you pay for", I must say that in the LCC sector, I was mightily impressed by Freedom Air, easyJet, GO and WestJet - all flights I took with them were outstanding, and *easily* lived up to most mainstream airline standards. Ryanair and Jetsgo were ok for the fare you paid, and still acceptable.

I never had a chance to fly with AZ, and I heard many many bad things about their dirty cabins, and equally many many good things about them - another example for the notion that people's perceptions and experience vary significantly - even on the same airline. And to make it even more interesting: I did research on visitor satisfaction on dolphin watch tours, and even on the very same trip, husband and wife filled in their surveys differently. You have guessed it: One was very happy, the other one said the trip was a waste of time! There you go - and flights are no different in that aspect...

Cheers

This last Christmas season I gave Airtran (FL) a try on the B717, and I can say that while the Airplane was new- it was grimy and dirty. The seats were stained and the tray tables still had coffee and soda on from previous flights. There was also crumbs and old food on the floor (ground into the carpet), it was a shock as I've had really good luck with the other LCC's I've been on (WN, F9)  vomit
At first I thought it was just an off day, but then a week later on the return flight- the filth was back with a vengeance-this time the lavs were nastier then the originating flight  eyepopping
I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning.

Ryanair and BMIbaby have some scruffy planes inside and out. The cabin carpets, seats and window panels have all seen better days but could be made better by wiping over with some Dettol and carpet shampoo!

Loeni, cockroach is a very common name ?

Was it some "Blattella Germanica", some "Blatta Orientalis" or maybe some "Periplaneta Americana".

Whatever it was, all of them like the muffins, just like you, and just like many A.net members, they like to change continent.  Silly

I really haven't been on a plane that's been really really bad. I think I was on a couple UA flights that smelled pretty bad.

Other than that it's usually (for me) just stains all over the tray tables. But I've become pretty accustomed to that, so oh well! :p

Alliance Airlines in India, a beat up 737-200. The overhead bins folded flat into the ceiling and I was literally afraid to sit in the seat.

No space on Sahara or Jet Airways that day!  boxedin

You have to keep in mind that generally airlines (small airlines especially) will put more effort in keeping their new aircraft (their pride) clean, and that old 721 (which will probably crash within the next month anyway) will receive less attention. This is especially true (in my opinion) for airlines from small / third world countries that have one nice international flagship and then the rest old beat-up second generation jets.
All the things you probably hate about travelling are warm reminders that I'm home

1. HP A320 PHX-SEA: Still had old seats w/video monitors all scratched up, flimsy tray tables, plane looked VERY worn out, smelly+ foul looking lavatories, dirty carpets

2. HP 737-300 SEA-PHX: No air vents  gnasher , VERY terrible looking lavs, VERY flimsy tray tables, dirty carpets

I took the SEA-PHX flight 2 weeks ago and the PHX-SEA flight last Friday.

UA 732 between ORD and BNA. My tray table was ok, but the guy sitting next to me had to tear his can of soda off of his... He pulled pretty hard, and guess what! The table broke free and fell into his lap. Actually the only A/C I've been on that has had a really disgusting smell. The cabin stunk of air freshener, and made my travelling companion feel sick.

Couldn't see a damn thing out the window either, it was so scratched!

Cheers
