When Is Your Airport Boring?

Tue Mar 22, 2005 8:03 am

Here in PHX, summer has a decrease in charter traffic, smaller equipment, and generally the same flight schedules day after day. Winter has more charters due to major sporting events and sun seekers, larger equipment, and other seasonal service. Am wondering what other major airports are seasonally boring and why? No need to answer if your airport is always boring or always exciting in terms of traffic.

daily, BWI is boring most of the time. it starts to get busy around 3pm, when the BA 777 comes in. and then late afternoon/evening means the arrival of big cargo jets like the FedEx and UPS A300's and Omni DC-10's, plus the usual evening rush. seasonally, i dont think there is much difference.

Saturday is the worst day, it is so bloody slow, and nothing of interest arrives. AKL isn't the most exciting airport, thank goodness we have visiting interestin aircraft passing through like we will next week.

Nearly the every day and all time time. Oh wait, we'll have a Futura 738 here this week.

Here's the Spotter Info provided by the airport.

At MIA probably very late in the evening...and or early morning.

Afternoons and Evenings are fun, you can see AF A340 or 744, AZ 772 or 763ER, LH 744 & A343, VS A346 or 744, IB anything from 742 to A346, BA multiple 744's, LX A332's, TAM A332, LAN 763's, EL AL 744 or 772, AC 763/ 762/A319 or A320, MX 319's and 320, AM 73NG's and MD80, AV 762/752 & MD80, JM A320's... those are some of my favorite International carriers that can be seen during those times! Alot of other as well...

and course plently of AA & AE... 772, 763, 762, 752, 738, MD80, AT7, ER4, ER3

STL is boring during mid-day and in the afternoon. THe mornings, rush hour, and night-time are when STL is busy like in the good ol' days. But around 10:00 A.M., the landings and takeoffs become virtually naught. in the afternoon befor rush hour the airport is like a desert. The AA and WN terminals are virtually empty.

Being a rather small, regional style airport, IOM is boring for much of the time. We do however, get the odd goody in - normally when I am working (Yes, kirk, I DO work!). And, even if I do get a pic, I doubt I'd get it passed the screeners!!!!!!!

However, it is unpredictable, and the bike racing season usually brings one or two nice things in.

Here in MIA there is really no horrible time expect for maybe 1am-4am when all there is are some cargo planes but the cargo planes are cool 727s MD-11 DC-10s. Will get some passenger planes too some late arrivals.
Early mourning 4:30am-7am is good in MIA with all the South American arrivals. Lan Chile 767 Tam A330 Varig MD-11 777 and many AA 767 and 777.

After around 8am it gets back to normal domestic flights but there will still be some surprises and Carribean airlines. BWAI, lots of Taca A319s and many AA planes 738s and MD-80s 757 A300s and some DL 767s. But than around 2pm the European airlines come in. 744 742 777 MD-11 everything. Than at around 8:30pm all the Euro flights have left and South American flights are starting to leave. Many AA 777 and 767.
Than the day starts over again.

Wow, this thread turned into a daily thing, but that's OK. Interesting replies from all.

FlyMIA: haven't been there since 1990. I flew a TW L1011 from PHX via STL. A few days later I took a AM M80 to CUN via MER. That flight left from a concourse where I had to ride a tram on the roof to the outer part. Might have been F or G. Aerialsexpress.com has some good aerials photos to check that, although I know MIA is undergoing quite a bit of rehabilitation. I do remember my AM flight was in the same concourse with Condor and Swissair charter D10s or MD11s. Lots of sunburned Europeans in golf apparel having pina coladas before their trips home. AM had a D10 flight to Paris as well. Exciting terminal back then.

Saturday evening through Sunday morning is definitely "sleeper" time at CLE. Although there is still some CommutAir and ExpressJet service, the flights are few and far between.

The best days and times to spot are 11:00 AM-1:00 PM and 6:30 PM-8:00 PM Wednesday and Thursday.

Well, there are times here in FRA, where you see nothing but LH - B737s, B747s, A320s, A330s, A340s, MD11s, CRJs, ARJs, ... every single plane wearing LH, LH Cityline, Team LH or LH Cargo colors...

But once those three or four LH planes waiting behind each other get off the ground, it's usually some airline from somewhere else on this planet...  Smile

To tell the truth - it really only very rarely get's boring here... or at least not during the time that the airport is open - now, during curfew hours, that's when it get's really boring... Big grin

Frank

For me, MAN can be quite boring in the afternoon, say after around 1pm. But that is slowly changing with the introduction of the Sky Europe flights, Air Baltic recommenings, and Estonian starting, although this is either over lunch or in the morning. But i guess for other people that come to MAN who don't go there every day like i do, it can be quiet interesting for them.

SAN may have lulls, but it's never boring!

There is a ban on take-offs between 11:30 PM and 6:30 AM. Flights can still land after that, the latest scheduled is America West Flight #730, arriving from LAS at 1:08 AM, currently scheduled as a 757.

That doesn't mean those hours are boring - in fact, if you drive up the Laurel Street hill, you will see the entire airport lit up like a pirate's chest, with gleaming reds, yellow, blues, and greens amongst the diamond whites.

Driving on Harbor drive from the east side (heading west) between 6 and 7, you can get some incredible close-ups of virtually every airline waiting to take-off - Everyone seems to have an early morning departure for somewhere, and it looks like a parade!!

Even during the day, there's a steady stream of jets leaving and departing. By far and away, nobody has an approach like SAN - whether you're in Balboa Park, downtown, or at Laurel and Pacific Highway, or watching the landing path from the new baseball stadium Petco Park, or at the Ocean Beach dog beach watching these beasts claw their way into the sky, SAN has the most dramatic approaches, landings, and take-offs around!  cloudnine

I have an incredible picture (rejected by a.net...oh well) of a FedEx DC-10 landing at SAN on one of the clearest days in recorded history. If anyone would like to see it, please e-mail me - I'd be happy to send it to you individually!

Happy Flying  airplane

PanAm747:

Great reply and am very familiar with SAN. Always wanted to hang out on the top of the Laurel Travel building (if it's still called that) where you could almost touch the landing gear. Miss those BA 744s coming in from PHX? That must have been quite a spectacle.

Having lived in PHX for most of the last 15 years I can also say that it gets less exciting in the summer. Go figure...who wouldn't like a nice trip to PHX in the summer?  hot

Then we are back to the usual CRJ-200 - 900's; Dash-8's, 737's, 318/319/320's; 757's, Super 80...stuff like that. The BA flight is usually one of the only widebodies.

PanAm747, wish I was in SAN! That's gotta be my favorite city and one of my top airports as well! I'd like to see that FedEx picture if you get a chance.
Meanwhile, somewhere 35,000 ft above your head...

PHX has a few stray widebodies, besides BA. Fedex does MD10/11s. UPS has A300s and 767s. Several of these come in right after each other in the early evening. DL brings us a 767 from ATL off and on. So does AA from DFW. LH graced us with an A340 from FRA until they pulled out. HA has daily 763 service to HNL. NW used to bring in D10s and occasional 742s from MSP, but replaced with the long 753s. AC ran a 762 for awhile to YYZ in the winter, but is now A320/19. No 777s unless BA downgrades, but pax loads doing well in the 744.

I used to think CLE was the best place in the world when I was a kid. Since the spectator deck closed and it became mostly an ERJ heaven, my opinion has changed dramatically. I would almost rather spot at CAK now than CLE despite the much less frequent flights.

I live near FLL and it is only boring see flight after flight or American, jetBlue and Southwest. The rest of the time it is great. There always seems to be something new going on. MIA is rather boring because of the huge number of AA flights, but even seeing a BA, AF or LH 747 never seems to get old. A majority of the photos on my personal website (see profile) have come from these two airports and there is always something new, a change of aircraft type, etc.

SAN, unfortunately, doesn't see a big variety of widebodies, which can make the airport boring to some spotters. Personally, I'll go down to SAN any day just to watch, spot, and take pictures...

The current tally of widebody movements at SAN is as follows, BTW:

DL 767-200/-300, 4x/day
HA 767-300, 1x/day
UPS 767-300, 1x/day
ABX 767-200, 1x/day
FX A300/DC-10/A310 4x/day (roughly)

No more BA, with their 777s and 747s, but here at SAN, we're hoping they come back and new European airlines begin service... but I don't wanna open a can of worms here...  shhh

SAN does not look so great to me. SAN does not even get BA service anymore. Not many widebodies. Only exciting thing in SAN is a FX DC-10. The landings are awesome down the hill and all but nothing great. The airport overview picture shows how boring SAN can be. Take that BA777 out of the pic and it is just an empty airport with a few domestic flights. The pictures show how little excitement there is.

Let's rephrase the question for PEN. When is the airport interesting?  biggrin

Well the only interesting A/C around here are the SQ 777-200, the Thai A300-600 and the occasional 727F of Transmile and DHL. The only real surprise recently was a C-17 after the Tsunami.
