SAN may have lulls, but it's never boring!
There is a ban on take-offs between 11:30 PM
and 6:30 AM
. Flights can still land after that, the latest scheduled is America West Flight #730, arriving from LAS
at 1:08 AM
, currently scheduled as a 757.
That doesn't mean those hours are boring - in fact, if you drive up the Laurel Street hill, you will see the entire airport lit up like a pirate's chest, with gleaming reds, yellow, blues, and greens amongst the diamond whites.
Driving on Harbor drive from the east side (heading west) between 6 and 7, you can get some incredible close-ups of virtually every airline waiting to take-off - Everyone seems to have an early morning departure for somewhere, and it looks like a parade!!
Even during the day, there's a steady stream of jets leaving and departing. By far and away, nobody has an approach like SAN
- whether you're in Balboa Park, downtown, or at Laurel and Pacific Highway, or watching the landing path from the new baseball stadium Petco Park, or at the Ocean Beach dog beach watching these beasts claw their way into the sky, SAN
has the most dramatic approaches, landings, and take-offs around!
I have an incredible picture (rejected by a.net...oh well) of a FedEx DC-10 landing at SAN
on one of the clearest days in recorded history. If anyone would like to see it, please e-mail me - I'd be happy to send it to you individually!
