Is Aviation Your Favourite Hobby?

Wed Mar 23, 2005 10:41 pm

Ok I know its weird to ask this question in an aviation site...but who knows. I have many hobbies though I have to admit Aviation, airplanes and modelling is my greatest hobby......what I love...and the fact my future job is totally distinct from this hobby makes my hobby even more intensive as I'll always see the magical aspect of it..... If I was in the buisness of aviation I'd be scared to discover things that may reduce this magic

Overall, Aviation would come in second on my list of favorite hobbies. Number one would be of course watching the New York Yankees and watching baseball games. I'd say that aviation is my favorite hobby from November to February.

I spent over 20 years at the airport... working for WC, WA and of course DL... I have been keeping up to date.... Things are much worse than when I retired from the "service".. sad to see how far things have fallen.......

I started out going to the airport with my parents when I was a little kid. My grandparents also lived right under the approach for CLE, so aviation has always been around me. When I finally drove for the first time by myself, the first place I went was FLL to watch planes for a few hours. When I got my first digital camera, the first place I went was FLL and then MIA, where I started my own personal website (see profile).

So I guess my answer to the question would be a resounding YES - lol.

Take care - DAN

I love and am obsessed with aviation.
A.net is a way to vent some of that.

Indeed I discovered long ago that airlines as a hobby are much more enjoyable than an airline job! Although my airline job can be tedious much of the time (believe it or not!), it has a strong tendency to feed into my airline hobby interests and vice versa.

My current areas of airline hobby concentration are timetables and building model airliners, primarily in 1:144 scale, in 1:200 to a lesser degree.

In the past, I have also been involved in airliner photography and have several albums full of 8x10 and 8x12 color prints of airliners (many no longer in service) that were taken from the late 1970s through 1998. I also have a sizeable collection of 1:400 diecast airliner models as well as some in 1:200.

Yes, definitely. I grew up in the first subdivision south of YYZ, so all I had to do was look out the back window to see the airport. As I got older, I would ride my bike to the airport to watch and photograph the planes. I've always built models of aircraft(of course I'm better at it now!) and even collected those diecast Corgis back in the 70's. I have a "Plane Room"(as my wife and kids call it), which is full of shelves of model aircraft, as is the "airspace" with some hanging from the ceiling. What wallspace left has photos and other items of aviation, including my laminated front page of the Toronto Telegram dated July 21, 1969 - "One Giant Leap for Mankind"
Just of note, this is my hobby; I don't consider my family in that category...

More or less, its part of my career and my daily interests. I draw on paper and on computer, calculate whatever is necessary and even make paper models. I love it and would not change that part of me for anyone, ever...

Unless I had a kid, I figure at some point that priority will exist, then I would not change that part of me for anyone, ever...lol

Yeah...I have other hobbies (like coin collecting - I don't even know how/why I got into that one), but aviation is the only one I really get into big time.

Great point... I use to love anything and everything to do w/ helicopters. But now that it's part of my job, I find myself branching off into the fixed winged world and less helicopter interest.

But don't misunderstand - I LOVE my job!
