How Are The UA 744's

Thu Mar 31, 2005 5:15 am

WOW!!! This summer I have booked my ticket on my FIRST 747 flight ever!!! Up until now I have only been on the 777, 767 etc... It is from FRA to IAD on a United 744. Now my question is, "What are the interiors like on UA's 744 fleet? Do they have PTV's yet? If not, when? Also, what else is there that I should know concerning IFE, seating, etc....?

Thanks alot...

They don't have any PTV's like the 777's, other then that great a/c to fly!

Have a good flight!

Hey Rob,

I noticed that you were in aisle 11 on the 747 flight. I actually just booked myself in 11H on flight 900 SFO-FRA, but after looking at seatguru.com I switched to 17A. How did you like that particular seat? Would you recommend switching back? Thanks!

17A & B, IMO, are two of the best seats upstairs. I just got done flying a couple of long haul legs in these seats and I wouldn't trade them for any others, including the exit row 15 seats. Don't switch!

Thanks LON-CHI!

Can I ask why you liked the seats so much - just curious to see what I have to look forward to.

And also, so we don't stray too much off the topic... I just flew on UA's 747-400 from SFO-SYD-LAX in M and looked just a tad bit dated. On the way down we were in Eco Plus and it was very comfortable - it hardly felt like a 15hour flight at all. On the way back we were in the way back (row 59) and even though it was also very comfortable, my only complaint was that it was very very difficult to see the video screen way up in front - so try to get something close to the front.

I prefer the UA 777 if I have to fly coach, partially because of the PTV but also because the seats are 18" wide versus the 17.5" seats on the 744. The Business class seats are about the same and the 777 First beds are supposed to be slightly wider but I have flown in both and never noticed the difference.

The 777 is truly miserable if you are trapped in the middle seat, requiring a "double excuse me" to get to the aisle and no window. The 777 might also be slightly quieter, but it may have been my imagination or related to the position of my seat.

In Coach, my first choice on UA is actually a 767 because it has few middle seats, so you are likely to get either a window or an aisle. They also have 18" wide seats and PTV.

Don't forget to check http://www.SeatGuru.com

I still miss the pre-deregulation 747s with only 9 seats abreast and lounge areas in the upper deck and back. I flew on a domestic 747 back in the golden age that had an organ or piano in back and a sofa like seating area, on Continental, I think.

Zone1 and me both were on that flight together so I will answer your question. I wouldn't recommend row 11. It is at the front by the lavatory, so you will have people walking by you for the entire flight. Also they did the meal service from the back forward, so we were the last to get our food, and last to order. The bulkhead was on the close side, but it didn't bother me at all. I kind of liked not having a seat reclining into me.

I flew UA Business from LAX to SYD in 03. It was pretty comfortable but have seen much better business class products on shorter flights. They really need to update the colors and seats in that cabin.

Being the last row, 17A & B tend to feel more private, and since you have more space than most of the other rows upstairs, it's not hard to get out of your seats when the people in front of you are fully reclined. Also, you have 4 windows & access to several side-bins.
