My First Time On Continental Airlines

Thu Apr 07, 2005 1:02 pm

How is the service on Continental? I booked a NWA ticket to MKE and 2 of my flights are on Continental 737-500's in Coach, MSP-IAH-GPT. I hear CO is a step above NWA on quality of service, etc, and I am excited to see what their product is like.

JetSE,
Unfortunately you are on the least desirable jet in the fleet. Although none of them are ratty or mistreated, the 735's aren't quite as good as some of their other A/C. Some A/C have the new slider Y seat and other have great IFE systems. I take it that your CO segments are the IAH-GPT flights. These segments are only an hour and a half so the service won't be extravagant. You will get a full can of beverage and some pretzels. There will not be any entertainment though. The publish a nice magazine and the F/As are for the most part, attentive and on the ball. CO is always ontime and courteous to me. You will enjoy their superior product even though you are on a 735.
SR
EDIT: I forgot . . .NW has no IFE so this won't be a big deal! CO's friendly staff and service will please you.

I like Conti a lot. Enough, in fact, to change from the AAdvantage program to the OnePass club.
One thing I appreciate is their nice fleet. Legroom is about average at 31". That's pretty typical.
I have come to appreciate that their planes are CLEAN.

While the 737-500 is the new dog of the fleet (since the MD-80s were retired in January... loved those planes, the Mad Dogs...), I think you'll still find it to be a good aircraft. Short and light, it's the quickest of the second-gen 737s.
I also believe that Continental has retrofitted them with larger overhead bins. That's a plus.

Other than that, it'll probably be pretty boring. Just a standard 3x3 cabin, plain ol' 737 ride. But hey, at least the windows are larger than anything Airbus has come up with!

I like IAH... especially the new terminal E. Okay, actually, the rest of the place is ghetto. I got yelled at by Houstonians when I reported that in my trip report (do a search for my username in the trip reports... I think I made one for my January MD-80 flights to Houston). But, no matter what they say, I still think IAH is kinda ghetto. Until you walk into terminal E.

Have a great trip, and give us a good long report comparing CO to NW. What are your travel dates?

I was just on a 737-500 from Houston to Monterrey and they are looking old and its not as good as the 737-800 but they still have the great service and still treat the customers very well. I have been flying them for 3 years not and make only about 2 or 3 flights per year on them from YVR-MTY and the odd Vegas stop over and have had nothing but great service with them.

Why is IAH ghetto?

Terminal E is beautiful. Terminal C is getting a total rehaul and the last time I was there, the entire North Concourse of C had been completed. The carpet was replaced with the same flooring that's in E, skylights had been added, and the entire space had been enlarged allowing for more retail options. When the Southside is completed, IAH will be a wonderful airport, considering A and B have already been redone, a TerminaLink has been built and expanded, there's a new FIS facility, and underground subway connecting all terminals, a relatively new Terminal D, and a new rental car facility that is a gem... especially since it got rid of hundreds of shuttle buses and the pollution they cause.

Well, having taken my first two NWA flights this morning from LGA-DTW-CMH (A320/DC9-50), I'll take Continental over them anyday.

NWA has to have the rudest, most unprofessional service I have ever experienced. Continental, is much nicer.

How many times have you flown NW? Once? I have flown on them on over 68 segments in the last year and a half and have yet to experience the "rudest, most unprofessional service".

So tell me exactly why your trip on NW didn't go exactly as planned...please.

I fly NW quite a bit, mainly on flights operated by MEM based flight crews. I've only had one flight where the service was indifferent, or sligtly less than indifferent. However, it was at 6:30 am the day after christmas, so I doubt that anyone, including the pax, were functioning really well. Otherwise, the MEM based crews, either on XJ, Pinnacle, or mainline have all been cordial. However, I do think that COex attendents are better than Pinnacle attendents, at least in my limited experience with COex. I have never flown CO mainline.

As far as gate agents go, the MEM ones are ok. The OKC gate agents are great, and most every outstation i've been to has good gate agents. I often ask to get moved to exit row seating if available, (I'm not eliete so i can't reserve them when i book or check in online), and they always do it without the "please don't bother me" attitude many gate agents have.

Yes, I flew them once. Today, two flights. I was stating, in my opinion, that I had the worst flight experience from a service/FA standpoint. I have nothing against NWA if that's your preference, I was just stating that it didn't work out for me.

Boarding in LGA, there was no greeting as the FA's were busy talking. There was no assistance to passengers during boarding, FAs were indifferent to passengers during the flight, and a few of us could hear the FA's bitching about the passengers.

Arrival was on-time into DTW so the flight itself was fine. The A320 we were on had some issues - broken seats, FA call/Light button panels fell off, etc. But thats part of normal wear and tear.

The DC-9-50 was in nice shape inside for a 32 year old A/C. FAs again were indifferent and service was bare if any. Granted it was a 30 minute trip. One FA spent the entire trip (including boarding) seated in an empty seat with some customers.

Overall, it just seemed as tho the employees were indifferent. Again, I don't want to dog NWA if you love it, it just wasn't for me.

My carrier of choice is Delta. Many people don't like Delta, so its just a matter of opinion...

Ahh... the 735's pretty good. You should have a pretty good time on CO. I recently flew on their 737-900. It's one of the greatest a/c in the fleet!  Smile

I am a skyteam alliance customer. I am gold medallian with the Skymiles program, however, I very frequently fly other airlines in that particular agreement more often than I do on DL. One thing that really bothers me is that people on and off a.net make brash decisions and make judgements about that particular airline, even though they have limited experience with them.

Dude chill the Fu*K out. DId i insult you directly? No! I just said I had a bad experience with NWA! So what? relax. If you had bad experience with Delta, I wouldn't be down your throat or losing sleep.

I have flown CO a few times, and, since I like flying, I enjoyed it. Coach class had good service too. However, I am not a big fan of the IAH terminal(although every little bit of it was under construction when I was there!). The safety video F/A's kind of frieked me out too!

CO is a great airline, and you should have a good flight. On the downside- you are in fact on one of the most undesierable aircraft in the fleet. A 739 would've been better- but you'll still have a good flight. :p  Smile
