Which Airline Would You Fly To South America?!

Mon Apr 11, 2005 1:56 pm

Hey!! Please, leave your opinion...

Which airline would you fly to South America??! Which one do you think es the best?? The worst?! Any personal experiences??
Let me remind you of some: Aerolineas Argentinas, Southern Winds (Arg), Varig, TAM, Pluna (Uruguay), Lloyd Aereo Boliviano, LAN, Avianca...
Personally, I think AR es great, though LAN and TAM have great onboard services too!!

Thanks!

From where? Origin limits choices somewhat! I did CO from the UK last month, which I was quite happy with overall.

Yes from where to where? I recommend AR, LA, JJ and AV, from the first 3 i have heard they are very nice, and im gonna talk about AV tough their cabin entertainment is still very average, the F/As are very kind and the food is nice, also, 34" legroom on the 757s and 767s, big blankets and pillows, and comfy seats.

I know am friends with the grandson of the vice president of AR so thats not a bad choice.I could get the jumpseat!

AA compared with LA is pure trash.

LA is among the bests in the world.

LAN certainly were impressive recently. Good food, very friendly crew, and great IFE on one trip (AVOD). Chilean wine with your meal at no extra cost, with top-ups as well!

I am not sure which LatAm airlines to recommend as I have not flown many recently. However, I would steer you away from Varig if you are in coach or if you are an IFE junky.
I flew down to GRU last year on their MD-11 in coach and it was not fun. The seats were OK but the IFE was hopeless. Only Brazilian movies/shows and they were shown on small TVs suspended from the ceiling.

Their redeeming value: Guarana! They still serve this great Brazilian soft drink....

My choice is LA. And it is not only recently that they are impressive. I had my first flt with them in 90. It was a 707(PPT - IPC - SCL ). And I have been impressed by the quality of their service.
And after that, I have never been disapointed by them.

I agree that you have to clarify from where you are flying. I have been twice to South America and both times I flew AM non-stop to GRU from MEX and my overall opinion is a very positive one... not the best of the best (like CX, JL or something), but pretty solid. Within Brazil, I flew JJ between CGH and VIX and I was impressed with their service... I am really eager to fly JJ long-haul one day soon.

I have heard that LA is truly outstanding, and that MX's MEX-EZE flight is also great.

On the other hand, if it is a good fare what you are looking for, CM, TA and AR may be your best options among the major carriers.

Ultimately, I think your decision should be determined by schedules, fares, connecting times (if non-stops are not available) and other factors such as whether your chosen airlines will give you miles.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

From AKL either LA or AR. From LHR AZ or BA from Asia MH via JNB from MIA any one of them provided the price is right.

LA and AA are the only way to go!

Aso, AV has great fares, cheaper than all US airlines and most European airlines also.

If you don't want to be disappointed, avoid AA. Trust me.

TAM - now if they only had A340s... but A330-200s are ok as well.

LA is always a bit annoying from here (Frankfurt), because of, to a lesser extent, the stop in MAD (ok - stopping in MAD or transferring in CDG, AMS, LHR, or anywhere else is more or less the same type of annoyance), but specifically because you overfly quite large parts of South America only to then be heading back (if you're going to Brazil, for example).

If I were heading to South America's west coast, LA would most likely be my primary choice.

I had the chance to fly JJ GRU-MIA in Business and it was fabulous. Loved the AVOD system and the seats were very comfortable. It was my first time on a A332 and it did not disappoint. The service was very good also.

Oh, how things have changed! I remember flying them from LIS-CDG, LIS-LHR back in the late 70s/early 80s and their economy was probably the best in the world: real china, excellent food, very professional, etc.. Unfortunately, things have changed. What a drag!!!!!  Sad
