China Eastern Airlines - Long Haul

Tue Apr 12, 2005 9:56 pm

Does anyone have any first hand experience of China Eastern Airlines business class on long haul international flights?

I am contemplating a trip in MU’S business class from LHR-PVG-SYD later in the year. I have heard that the cabins and toilets are dirty, smoking is permitted on board and the food is lousy! (I don’t think these problems are necessarily isolated to MU! I’m sure people could say the same of BA for example!)

I think that these are ‘one off’ observations (or domestic flights?) and not the norm for the long haul services. Am I wrong?

Also, I understand that from Nov to Apr the 300 series of A340 is operated between LHR-PVG-LHR. The business class seat pitch and overall comfort isn’t as good as the seats on the 600 series A340. Is this right?

What you heard - "the cabins and toilets are dirty, smoking is permitted on board and the food is lousy!" are just NOT TRUE.
I have flown on MU a least 4 times between YVR and PVG so far on Business Class and the service onboard were very good. The meals were fine and washrooms were clean. The cabin crews were extremely friendly and helpful, even though their English was not very fluent, but at least we understand each other well.
I have flown on both the A340-300 and 600, and indeed the business class seats in the 600 are much better. It is a almost fully flat-bed type with lots of space. However the 300 J seat was disappointing, especially after you have tried the 600. MU is changing all the 300 J class to the same high quality J seats as in the 600 within this year, thus making the same amount its long haul fleet. MU is promoting its J service between YVR and PVG with a alarmingly low fares at CA$1900 return !!!! Great value for the money on its A340-600 service.
Just make sure you are flying on the 340-600 and not the 300.

I had feared the worst when I had to fly MU last Feb/March. But it turned out to be much better than I had expected. I have flown on MU both domestic (biz/first) and international (eco; PVG-CDG). Cabin clean, friendly service, new aircraft. Quite good domestic lounge at PEK, too (int'l standard).

I flew China Eastern when I went to a business/vacation with my family. I don't know how we ended up with China Eastern. My dad was first reluctant to fly with a Chinese airline but since he had flown with JAL and ANA before he went ahead with it. I was a bit nervous because of the Chinese thing too and the fact that I couldn't understand a word of the pilots once on-board. After all that the actual flights were very good, nothing to complain about there. I would say service was better than some US airlines. There is nothing wrong with China Eastern.
