Please Help Me Choose My Flight!

Fri Apr 15, 2005 8:01 am

I know tons of times this type of thing comes up. But I've never flown this route. So feedback would help. I'm flying COACH from Newark to London. Which would you take?

Virgin (9:25 p.m.) flight on 747-400
Continental (6:00 p.m.) on 777 or (8:30 p.m.) on 764
British Airways (7:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m.) on 777

I think Virgin has the better inflight service, but I am not a big fan of the 744 seating configuration, so I would probably choose the BA 777.

I'd either take VS or CO. It's a hard decision.. VS has great service and IFE but CO has a triple7 on the route. But overall.. I'd go with the VS 744. I'm going on it this summer and I can't WAIT.

I took Continental on this route on a 762 and 772 and couldn't fault them on anything. I'd reccomend Continental. The only thing missing that VS offers is an amenity kit.. but really, its not that long of a flight, anyway.

Take CO, i know little about virgin and british but the service with CO is amazing
If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.

VS, the 744 is the king of the skies, then BA would be second.

I know that CO doesn't fly into LHR, but the VS and BA flights, do they serve LHR or LGW?

Cheers

VS or BA definetly. You will find great service in both!

CO definitely. My most recent trip was a couple of weeks ago on that route. Great service, and those 777s are nice!

I'd choose VS second as they used to be a good airline, although standards have slipped recently it seems.

BA would be my last choice as they are consistent - consistently poor. Crew that appear to not care less.

In terms of London airports, some people prefer Gatwick, some Heathrow. Some will say Heathrow is nearer, but that all depends where you're going, since Gatwick is quicker to the South Ken musuems, for example. I think CO is the only airline that uses LGW; BA and VS appear to send all their flights to LHR.

i would definately choose CO at 6:00
1. they have the smallest of the 3 aircrafts
2. smaller aircraft, fewer ppl, more focus is put on u
3. co has great service, choose it over ba anyday
4. 6 pm because i love having a half red eye and half normal flight

I must on this issue defend BA cabin crew. BA crew are some of the most caring you will find anywhere and are always professional and good. Sometimes BA crew can take caring and trying to help to a point where it can be annoying for ground staff, because they give passengers the impression that we can solve it all. To say that they 'appear to care less' is far from the truth. As for their service it is always good and professional....they know how to remain calm and don't act like amuzed teenagers like some other airlines. I work for BA, but recently flew back to the UK with another UK carrier and while the crew were very friendly, the level of service left much to be desired. However, I won't make blanket statements that their crew are poor, because it might have been only that flight.

I'd suggest you take the flight that is most convenient in terms of departure and arrival times and airport (CO - LGW, BA/VS - LHR). Also, if you have an aircraft preference then maybe that can also help. I don't know about CO's service standards, but BA and VS are both good and better than most, although you can get some bad times. But hey, crew are human and won't always be at 100%.

I thought that might raise a few hackles, especially to a BA employee. Okay, to be fair I have had a friendly flight crew on one flight... out of TWELVE in the last few years. Does that put it into perspective? I'm not saying they're bad, just that you feel like "yet another passenger" rather than a valued customer. I've also flown CO and VS across the pond and find their crew much more friendly. Perhaps BA are more friendly "up-front", but we're talking coach/economy here.

At the end of the day, everybody has their own experiences and opinions. It's up to COEWR2587 to decide which sounds better.

Flew this route a few weeks back on VS, had a fantastic flight. If you can get the V:Port entertainment system then that would be very good !

Consider if you can get Frequent Flyer miles from your choices (or other airlines). BA, while in the same alliance for FF miles with AAdvantage, you can't get AA miles on BA flights across the Atlantic. VS has no FF partner that I recall, BUT with CO, you can get their FF miles. If already a CO FF member, you can get a quick 7000 miles. Besides, like BA, on CO you can get a 777, the convenience of EWR (since like me it is part of your screen name, so assume you live near EWR) although flying into LGW may be a flaw. Check the info for getting to/from LGW to central London, I believe there are direct trains to Victoria Station for LGW, as well as bus services.

Well if the price doesn't isn't the main focus I would pick VS, so what if it is late, they are all evening and if you leave at 6 then you will probably get in pretty early. I would say VS for the IFE,and service is nice, there aren't any bad points really.

BA next because IFE is pretty good and the times are good, they have the earlier one, and the later one, good if you miss any of them!

LHR to me seems easier, but that is b/c are stop was notting hill gate and that was more east then west so it was easier to LHR. Never been to LGW but I say go to LHR, it is bigger and really cool/fun. I don't know if LGW has the mall in the terminal but the harrods with discounts, can't beat it. We did alot of shopping in there.

Pick VS!!!

Have you thought of LH or AF or KL/NW as flights via mainland europe are often cheaper although you do have to change and so it takes longer.

I would take VS or BA. Not a huge fan of 767 trans atlantic service.
I only flown VS out of the three and that 744 is fine. Good IFE serivce it good too.
