Emirates A380s..........why So Many?

Fri Apr 22, 2005 8:23 am

I was just wondering why did Emirates order such a large amount of A380s (23), I dont really see why they need so many high capcity airplanes. Am I wrong???? Where are they all going to fly them?

Wow.. I knew they had orderd a lot- but 23(!).. wow!! Well.. they obveously thought their airline had a need for high-compacity passenger aircraft.

I couldn't pull up much on what routes they are going to be flying it on. All I found was this:
http://www.ameinfo.com/52419.html

Maybe someone else in here could help you out with that.

Also- does anyone know when Airbus is expected to have all 23 of these A380s deliverd to Emirates?

What about flights to MIA. Anyone think that might happen.
Besides for AF and VS who else might fly the 380 to MIA?

High capicity routes and I believe EK ordered so many only for 'status' purposes.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Emirates have actually ordered 45 (yes 45) A380's.

See this thread http://www.airliners.net/discussions...general_aviation/read.main/2056959 for info on the current aircraft orderbook  Smile

Thanks

Aren't they like Qatar Airways? They don't give a damn about profit. They are supported by the rich oil producers, and only need the airline for prestige and name.

Their reasons probably involve Dubai's growth and projected growth as a global transit hub. Not to mention a lot of their routes are flying full for every single flight. They need capacity for these routes and for other routes projected to grow in the next 10-12 years it will take for delivery. Don't forget these mammoth aircraft are also reportedly very efficient per pax carried and will serve them as well as any other a/c type in their fleet. Keeping in mind the price of fuel is rising all the time, soon it won't be feasible to operate so many flights and remain profitable.

Using the A380 sounds like a reasonable business practice to me. They also need them to capacity dump on some routes to put other airlines off that particular route. If they can continue to make a profit while others fall by the weyside and they can afford to put other airlines out of business that can only be a good thing for them.

They're making great profits now by doing what they do, they aren't going to
change their plan any by ordering A380s. If BA can operate that huge 744 fleet on that network of theirs, I'm pretty sure EK can use less A380s on the routes they fly and fill them well.

what I never understood is why, if they have a need for 45 380s, because their current planes are full, why did they never go for any 744s in the meantime?

You almost answered your own question. 'In the meantime'. There is no point making such a massive expenditure on an Aircraft that is a) on its way out of production, and b) is only required for a very limited time. They could lease I guess, but part of their success has been that they have always been among the first airlines buying new aircraft variants rather than the last of an old design.

Well I have some simple questions for you:

  • How often do you fly within the US?
  • How often do you fly outside the US?
  • Of those flights you have been on, how would you characterize their capacities or frquencies?
  • What are your thoughts for the North American market?
  • What do you think A380 is meant for?
  • What are your thoughts regarding A380's (forecasted) market?

Answer these questions and you will pretty much know the answer yourself, I am trying to get you to identify your bias and inform any ignorance.

yeah, when i saw the number 23, i was quite confused since I remember seeing numbers in the 40's. I call this overkill. How much oil money do they have to burn over there?

Other then the need to be the biggest guy on the block, the business sense of having so many of that particular aircraft escapes me.
I could see 5 for prestige sake, and then adding more IF you could fill them profitably. But 23 seems like a simple case of money burning a hole in the proverbial pocket.

Using such large, fuel efficient aircraft, combined with the lower fuel costs in the Middle East equals lower fares, this gives them the edge over airlines using 747's etc,to and from the Middle East, pax will always go for a cheaper fare on an airline with a good service, as Emirates do provide.

Once Emirates have seen off the competition in the Middle East, then from there they can use the excess 380's on new routings, using the same formula to force themselves into new markets.

At the end of the day, oil rules, after all that's why the Gulf war happened.

It may show an inability to think outside whatever you believe, which is limited to that which you know and understand and accept. Many of my friends, classmates, roommates (I go to an aerospace college) judge the point of the plane mainly around US markets, i.e. only 6 US airports can take it, pax want frequency, no new 747's have been sold, etc. They act like there isn't a world out there expanding on its own that doesn't look up to the US anymore. Most of them have not been outside the US or Europe and those that do either are mostly student pilots (who learn yoke instead of sidestick) who happen to be diehard patriots of Boeing or happen to hate Airbus.

Ignorance is an unacceptable bias, I wish they would inform themselves, they usually act as if they know more than I do (I suppose because they have more conviction in what they believe in) and I have been following A3XX/A380 since its conception when I was in highschool.

I know its market, it will not develop for another 5 years (meaning A380 will fly not to specs for a while, the plane was introduced to the market a bit early) and will mature out near 20 years from now. Those aircraft that were purchased are not going to be delivered now, they will be delivered when they are needed, in the future. EK has done their homework and has determined the need for the aircraft out into their future, so what if it doesn't make sense to people in this country, a majority those A380's may never come here.

I have given you my answer and/or helpful feedback but I feel it may not be enough; you tell me, what are the chances that you have already made up your mind despite my input?

I run into ignorant people all the time in every field not just aviation, people find it convenient to judge without asking questions, as if they know enough. It is hard for me to sift out the genuinely innocent questions however, I apologize if I have offended thee.
