Most Graceful 4 Engine Airliner?

Sun Apr 24, 2005 5:28 am

I have always liked the look of 4 engine airliners. Which is the most gracefully of all the 4 engine airliners. Possible contenders:
Boeing 707
Douglas DC8
De Havilland Comet
Convair 880
Tu-144
Concorde
Boeing 747
Airbus A340
Airbus A380
IL-96

Feel free to suggest others. My favorite is the Boeing 747.

The most graceful 4 holer would be the B707-300C series...!!!!
Closely followed by the DC8-61/63....!!!!!

Concorde, NQA.
Grace is speed under pressure.
Everything else just lumbers along simply provinding enough thrust to go forward a bit an keep itself in the sky.

Boeing 307 Stratoliner or the Douglas DC-7 Seven Seas. Two of the most promising airliners of their times, both of which fell victim to factors out of the industry's control-WWII killed the Stratocruiser and the Jet Age killed the Seven Seas.

The VC10 was certainly a beautiful Lady, but, you could never describe her as graceful, she was raw power, subtle control and the ability to glide through the air were not her forte.

For me it has to be the true lady of the skies, Concorde.

From Websters:

Main Entry: grace·ful
Pronunciation: 'grAs-f&l
Function: adjective
: displaying grace in form or action : pleasing or attractive in line, proportion, or movement
- grace·ful·ly /-f&-lE/ adverb
- grace·ful·ness noun

Is the A380 pleasing or attractive in line and proportion?

I'm with you there, It has as much grace as a shipping container IMHO; it kind of reminds me of the Boeing Stratocruiser. I'd still like to see it plying its trade though.

I, too, love all versions of the Connie. I would also like to nominate the De Havilland DH-91 Albatross (looks kind of like Lockheed's proposed Excalibur, precursor to the Constellation).

Jet age Concorde

The rest are at best "nice" planes, at worst oddities in the sky (eg Short Skyvan).
