Best Airport To Be Stuck At

Mon Apr 25, 2005 10:00 pm

hey all...

i was just reading the thread of 2005's best airports in the world. well it got me thinking...

if there were major delays (at any airport in the US) what airport would you rather be stuck at. thinking more on the terms of things to do at the airport, food, resting areas, etc.

i'd have to say MCO due to the really nice food court near security and the little shopping area in the same area and the same goes for IAD (especially the B gate area).

any thoughts or stories you all have? and just for s&%#s and giggles...what about int'l airports?

I mentioned this before in a previous thread: Canaima in Venezuela. Sitting out in the open in a palm-fringed bar, eating free fruit (I'm serious), watching DC-3s come and go . . . and boarding your aircraft takes all of FIVE MINUTES!

Maybe its just me, but LAS is always a good one, as long as you are somewhere near a window.
There are always plenty of aircraft to look at and if that gets boring, there are always the slot machines! Granted, everyone knows those slot machines have some of the poorest odds in Vegas, but it is still one way to pass a few hours. Of course, if you are 'stuck' in LAS it probably means you are trying to get home, in which you likely are not leaving with a lot of money anyway!
None shall pass!!!!

i have to throw a vote out there for O'Hare. if you're going to have chaos...why not have maximum chaos?

Cincinnati. only because the Delta terminals there are nice and spacious (can get up, walk around, etc.) and there are some good restaurans there.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is good. if you're guaranteed a few hours delay for mechanical, or whatever, and you can get to the Mall of America...well....boom

when I was at Las Vegas, I guess I just didn't have a good view of the field. I
tried to go find a place (Southwest gates) to watch everyone come and go and found a whole lot of nothing to look at. or eat.

I've always been impressed with CLT - at least now that the construction on Concourse E is finished. The atrium just beyond security that leads to all concourses features restaurants and shopping - plenty to keep you busy for a few hours.

I'd have to go with PIT. Decent airport concessions (Sam Adams Brewhouse, anyone? AND they have 2 of them to boot!), they've got the mall in the airport for the shopaholics, and prior to US dehubbing it, you could get in some good spotting too.

I second Garnetpalmetto with PIT. It's big enough to walk around in and get a work out plus the Airmall!! You can't go wrong!

I agree with you on MCO. Got stuck there once during Speedweeks. Plenty of floorspace for sleeping when the hotel's full. The fountain's kinda nice when it's off, if you like hard surfaces zzz
Don't put me on A7! I got out of the airport, so why send me back?

I would go with DCA, especially in summer.

You can walk to Gravelly Point and watch all the hot women (or men if that's your preference!)  Wink

LAS...even if you're almost broke, if you're stuck for a few hours go over to the Strip - the people-watching alone is great entertainment. Or get a workout in at the in-airport health club.

Just bought tickets to LAS for the first weekend in June...can't wait!

I have to agree with BNAflyer on CLT. Also the maximum chaos at ORD

i love fellow masochists.

could you only imagine if Southwest had a large operation there?

big snow storm hits. delays. everyone fighting over 5 flights at the same gate to get their chance to be at the front of the line.

sounds like a CBS made for tv movie. first..."Spring Break: Shark Attack", then "Locusts" and now coming this fall: "Southwest: DELAYED."

No one's mentioned EWR? Two years ago, I was stuck there on an equipment change, and the extra two hours I stayed there, I saw everything... BA, LY, SQ, etc...

For a guy from SAN (and we all know how much int'l service and widebodies that airport gets), it certainly was cool... Also, restaurants and phones were nearby, so I was good otherwise.

KABQ (Albuquerque, NM) shares runways with Kirtland AFB. While waiting for WN flight to BWI, I saw a gaggle of F-16s take off. WOW! Not a bad place to get stuck if you like airplanes of all sorts.

I'd say DTW McNamara, great views (although rather silvery and red planes  Smile ), and great sports bar where you can smoke and enjoy your drink...

MIA is not bad. You have pretty good food before security not just fast food but even some sit down type resturants. Well sort of. Lots of overpriced shops just like any airport. And its just an Miami atmosphere. People all around and crowded. You can just watch all the different people.
BOS AA terminal is not bad either. Great views of the runway and plenty of space to walk around.

I would love to be stuck at DFW in the summer during a thunder and lightening storm. Don't ask me... I just have a thing for Airports and thunderstorms during the summer.

I love this thread. Maybe we can make it the top 10 airports you'd love to get stranded.

1. Nagoya Chubu International. I haven't been there but the article I read mentions about a big mall, hotel, and a public bath inside that offers superb views of aircrafts, the sea, etc.

2. Tokyo Narita. Japanese soups, so many jumbos to see from view deck, people are so polite and nice.

3. Singapore Changi. Big mall with moviehouses inside. swimming pool on rooftop.

4. Amsterdam Schiphol. Supermarket, museum, airline memorabilia stores, view deck, hotels with good views, spacious and very bright.

5. Las Vegas - slot machines inside, strip is very close to the airport

will post the others next time.

In the US, If I gotta be stuck, I think HNL, LAX or DTW. Good food, good drink, and great spotting at all three. Internationally, I have to go with NRT for the widebodies, and AMS for the in-airport casino. Spotting there isn't bad either.  Silly

This brings up a good question I've often wondered about..... is NRT the airport that has the most widebody movements. I've spent several long layovers there, and it seems that four out of every five arrivals or departures are a 747, and the others are trip 7's, or DC-10's.  airplane

But the Comair terminal is a nightmare: Cramped, dark, millions of people, noisy, NO views whatsoever - never get stuck there more than 1hr!

Internationally, my number one is FRA - best viewing I have ever seen - all open air, on both terminals - huge! Great views on apron (can almost touch the 747s) and runways (except Runway West, which is far far far far away...). Lots of traffic from all corners of the world. And in addition, Terminal 2 has a nice food area upstairs with views as well.

Cheers

Suprisingly...LGB

One morning I came in to LAX off a QF flight. I then made my way across town to get a B6 red-eye that night. Don't get me wrong LGB is a dump, but if you go upstairs from check-in towards the bar/restaurant, there is a ratty sofa that sits across from the airport offices. Jetlagged to all hell I passed out on that sofa for a good 4-5 hours. It was comfy, quiet, and nobody bothered me.

Internationally I would have to say ICN. I have been stuck there on more than a couple of occasions (Thanks KE!!!). Brand new airport, wide, cushy benches, a good variety of widebodys to look at, and spicy Korean food which (by airport standards) is quite reasonable. And, of course, lots of Korean beer to wash it down.  drunk
