Your Longest Taxi Ride?

Tue Apr 26, 2005 4:22 pm

This is for all pilots (bit passengers to, if they keep track) out there. At Schiphol, there is a runway which is a 'hike' away from the terminal: 18R-36L (Polderbaan). It can take up to 20 minutes to get there. Just made me wonder, what is your worst taxi time ever? And which airport do you consider the worst when it comes to taxi times? (no queues, just distances)

Maybe it has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it in the archives. If you do, a link to the previous poll would also be helpfull.

I don't know where the heck we were going but at IAD a few weeks back we pushed back around 9.55pm and didn't leave the ground until after 10.30pm! I didn't think it was possible to taxi around Dulles for 30mins without going round in circles! Since it was dark (and I'd been enjoying preflight champagne) I had even less of an idea of figuring it out

AMS can have a very long taxi from runway to terminal - as can CDG.

On more than one occasion I have flown into T3 at LHR at peak time when there is a shortage of gates available and had to sit and wait for ages before we could get a free one.

AMS from the Polderbaan - took HOURS !! Also if you land on the eastern runway at JNB, it can take a while to get to the terminal.

I remember DIA having one or two runways that seem to take forever to get to and from the terminal.

From the Empire State Building to LGA. It took 45 minutes and the taxi driver didn't speak English.  Wink

The Polderbaan is certainly the longest taxi I've ever had. I could mention queues like several have before me, but I believe the poster wanted times/distances, not queues.

One good thing about that Polderbaan is that the pilots really seem to speed down those taxiways! Otherwise it could take a *very* long time to get to/from!

Heathrow can be interesting at times, landing on 27R and taxiing via the congested central terminal area to the east end of T4, and crossing an active runway in the process. One hopes that once T5 is built there will be a couple of parallel taxiways connecting the runways between T5 and T3/T2 which are well clear of apron movements.

In terms of taxiing time, definitely AMS when I arrived in an EUJ f100... ironically, going home we were in air only a few mins after pushback!

When we landed in AMS in a KLM F100, it took forever to taxi to the remote stand from the runway we landed on... I have no idea which runway it was though.

Just caught this...

DIA

DIA is not Denver airport code.

it's DEN, sir. Both old and new airport: DEN.

Originally I thought DIA is new Denver airport. I was wrong.

Anyway, my longest taxi ride was in DFW. Plane departed gate and then taxied to the opposite side of airport for take off.

The longest one that I had was in Frankfurt. It took us about 15 minutes to be up in the air. We had the last couple of gates on the end of the east side and then taxied to take off on the far end of the west side on that take-off only runway. I didn't mind because I had time to see all those european airlines that we don't see in the states.

I was on a UA A320 at ORD, taxying to the gate. I recognised our surroundings, and realized that we were close to T1. Listening to Ch9 I heard the controller say "United XXXX, (can't remember flight#...), do the circuit." I didn't realize what he meant, but then the captain came on and informed us that he had to circumnavigate the terminal complex, due to a gate-change...

Sat in that damn tube for over an hour...

I would agree with JFK, especially from the AA/BA terminal around the other terminals to the far runways.

4-5 hours. But it wasn't because of the time getting to the runway. It had to deal with weather/aircraft delayed maitnence crap, etc.

It would depend what you consider taxing. If you consider it being from the time you are push back then I can say I have taxied for over and hour at DEN. Right after we were pushed back a thunderstorm struck and closed the airport for an hour, so we just sat in the plane pushed back from the gate for that hour. If you consider it as once you are heading for the runway, then I can only say maybe 20 minutes which was at DEN also, we were a few planes back in the line for takeoff.

Well longest ride while moving was at JFK on B6. Since they are the far north and we first taxied out east and then we took the long way to the south runway. It took about 20 minutes. We did were like 5th in line for take off when we got there, we all traveled in a line, that was like 10 minutes. SO it took about 30-35 mins. Here is a little map of the route:

But my first flight on DL LGA-MCO (pre Song days, thankfully) and we taxied out and then sat on the side of the runway for about 1 1/2 hours because there were storms around NC and they had to re-route us and there was alot of planes in the area so we had to wait until they found a good path.

While DEN is the official code, it is known locally as "DIA", so to call it that is perfectly acceptable...it's just a coincidence that it happens to be a three letter acronym as well so it can easily be mistaken for the official code...

Went to AMS yesterday on LS from MAN and suffered the long taxi from the Polderbaan to the terminal. Man, that is one loooooonnnnnnnnnggggggggg taxi! Its almost like you are landing in the city itself, then taxiing to the airport! When we landed, i was like "where's the airport then?!" The other times i've been we've landed much closer. Hope i don't have to put up with that again!

FRA "Startbahn West" (Runway West) is far away, and always takes a while to get to.

My longest "straight" taxiing was at JFK with AA - took ages!

My longest taxiing "with complications" was surely in LAX - Our NZ B747-400 from AKL was on the ground, taxied a bit, and then had to wait for 30 minutes, because our gate was still occupied.

LGA was a wild taxiride as well - taxiing in circles to let other aircraft in and out...

Cheers

BA from JFK on a flight to MAN. Taxing for about 30 mins from the BA terminal to 31L. Think we were right at the back of the departure queue as had missed our original slot.

Polderbaan, AMS, no question. I remember when it first opened, I was speechless since AMS was known as being a quick and convenient airport to connect at. Now it seems like every trip I do there uses that runway. BTW, aren't they planning on building a new terminal in that area as well?

Taxing from BCN's new runway to any of the terminals takes no less than 20 minutes. Hopefully this will not happen anymore when the new terminal is finished.
At the bus station, buses stop. At the train station, trains stop. At my desk, I have a work station.

That´s quite true, but on the other hand almost everybody should recognize DIA as "Denver International Airport" as this is the abbreviation (not only) the locals use.

When it comes to changing airports from one location to another, they usually take their IATA-code with them, like:
DEN: Stapleton --> DIA  Smile
MUC: Riem --> Franz Josef Strauss
HKG: Kai Tak --> Chek Lap Kok
NGO: Komaki --> CentrAir
Does anybody have some more examples ?

Long but very quick taxi in FRA:
2 years ago, OS had to supplement a Dash 8 bound for KLU that had gone tech (still in KLU) by a Welcome Air Dornier 328 Prop (of course with some delays involved).
Upon taxiing from a remote stand in front of Terminal 2 to Rwy 18 along the US Airbase we actually got permission to shortcut via the US Airbase (something that happens not too frequently, as the US Airbase is U.S. territory, and there is a history of people having been arrested by Military Police for trespassing the border between Germany and the U.S. by crossing that coloured line on the apron)

Surprised no one else has mentioned the Reef Runway (8R/26L) at HNL. My longest ride, nearly 30 minutes, was on a DL L-1011 to SFO taxiing out to 8R. I was sitting on the right side of the plane over the wing, and from that angle, you can't see the taxiway under you so it looks like you're gliding over the water!
