LGW-SAN Via CVG Or ATL?

Thu Apr 28, 2005 12:16 pm

Hello to all!

I am helping a teacher friend of mine book a trip for herself and her two daughters plan their trip to Athens this summer. All three have Delta SkyMiles Accounts.

The outbound trip will have them flying SAN-SLC-JFK-ATH. The girls are going from Athens to London independently with their dad. Mom is flying home direct from Athens, but the girls need to come home from London.

The choices for them are LGW-CVG-SAN or LGW-ATL-SAN. The CVG connection is one they have done before, but has a fairly long connection time, and a 737-800, which is 3x3 seating. Via ATL, they have better connection time, and a 767-300 to SAN, so the two can have window and aisle (no strangers); however, they've never been through ATL.

I have not experienced an international to domestic arrival from either airport - can anyone advise which would be a better experience for them? They have travelled internationally before, so they are not inexperienced. They have been through CVG before, but not ATL. Would that be a harder airport to navigate? Any experiences you all can recommend?

Thank you in advance!!

CVG is obviously the easier airport to connect through, with a small international arrivals area, which leads you immediately into the main Delta departure terminal, from where all DL mainline flights leave. I have found CVG to be one of the most user friendly international gateways to connect through when traveling between Europe and the US.

That being said, ATL is not bad either, but the connection will likely involve a change of terminals between the International Arrivals concourse E and one of the main DL departures concourses, very likely to be concourse A for a B763 departure. The connecting process is not as bad as it sounds, as the train system between the terminals is easy enough. Still, connecting through ATL is likely harder than connecting through CVG. Also, depending on the time of the afternoon, ATL immigration and customs areas can get a bit busy.

Hello !

I have done both LGW-ATL-MCO and LGW-CVG-MCO on DL, my opinion is that Cincinnati is slightly quicker to connect through, but Atlanta is not too bad atall either with good terminals layout al linked by the train. I wouldnt say ATL is alot harder to navigate than CVG.

LGW-CVG will be with a 767-300 which I found comfortable
I think LGW-ATL has one flight with the 777 at around 9.30 ? I went on this and loved the 777, not sure how long the 777 will remain on LGW-ATL though.

Of course depends how much time you have to see other aircraft because if you want to see alot then ATL is the place to go !

Hope thats helped abit !

I personally like CVG better than ATL. Better airport overall.  Smile

My one experience transferring at Atlanta was a nightmare. I had less than an hour to transfer, the incoming flight from JAX was late, and to add to my wonderful experience, the trains connecting the terminals was not in service. Did I mention having to transfer from terminal E to A?

Personally, I would recommend that you avoid ATL if given the choice.
