You're basically right. Unless you're flying transcon (from the East coast to the West coast), you won't get anything for free in Y unless you're flying on CO. They're the only domestic carrier left that offers meals for free in coach.

As for the quality, well, it ranges from decent to subpar. When I flew EWR-SJU, they served a pretty nasty hamburger to the Y pax, but when I flew STT-EWR, we got a very nice chicken sandwich.

Basically, on shorter flights around mealtimes, you will usually get a small turkey sandwich with maybe some chips, carrots, and a chocolate. On longer flights, such as midcons (i.e. EWR-IAH) you will get the same except with a hot sandwich, which rotates between Turkey Pastrami, a Chicken Sandwich, BBQ Chicken, Chicken Teriyaki, or a Hamburger (these are all of the ones that I know of). On the longest domestic flights (transcon), you will get a small salad (either lettuce, pasta, or cole slaw), with chips, some fruit, and one of the aforementioned hot sandwiches.

You only the hot "casserole" choice (i.e. pasta, chicken, beef, etc.) when flying internationally.

If you flight duration is anything less than three hours, expect nothing other than those salty pretzels which will make you extremely thirsty.  Wink

Since you are from India, you'll end up wishing you were on Jet Airways.

I thought that this was a trick question.....

Meal service has been discontinued on most US domestic services, dont expect anything but drinks and pretzels or nuts or other such snacks on most flights; some airlines have buy-on-board programs, but this again depends on the route, duration of the flight and airline (and it seems that some carriers will drop buy-on-board in the near future). CO is an exception, as they still provide meals on some flights in both cabins (although sometimes its difficult to figure out which flights get meal services, it depends on departure/arrival times) so I guess, by default, CO has the best meal service on domestic flights.

Grab something to eat in the terminal before you depart.

I would have to say Aloha has some awesome meals. Hawaiian's are not too shabby either! Aloha's are 10/10 though....served on a real dish too.

AS still offers meals at mealtimes in the main cabin on many flights - not just their transcons.

Any airline that serves moma's chicken and waffles is the best airline with meal services. LOL

I think Frontier still serves free food. They have quite a large catering department (for a small airline).

KLM does. I've sat in economy class for the last 7 times that I flew them and i haven't expierienced a bad meal and I have deliciously enjoyed them.

If you have the chance, pick something up before you get on the plane. Sometimes you'll even hear the gate agent suggest to the passengers to bring something on board with them since no food will be served.

Last time I flew (SMF-DFW on AA), I brought myself a complete 4 piece chicken meal from KFC. Had all kinds of questions from people who didn't know you could do that.

KL is Dutch! This thread is about U.S. carriers.

I'm a little confussed. Some previous posts refer to a sandwich or a burger. That sounds in a +3 hours flight like a "snack" not like a "meal".

Most US domestic carriers, save AS, CO (two of the best in the US), have shit for main cabin service. They are deplorable. Lucky to get something to drink and a bag of nuts or pretzels.

Want to see the difference, go to www.airlinemeals.net and spend a few minutes in there. Example: 1.5 hour LH Region Jet flight serves full meals. Want a meal on a region jet in the US - regardless of stage length - you'll bring it aboard. Probably better for you anyway.

Guess you haven't flown Alaska recently. We serve pretty much nothing anymore. In the main cabin up and down the west coast- it's snacks such as a Cheddar Snack Mix or Honey Mustard sesame sticks. That's it. There is Buy on Board for our Mexico flights (LAX-CUN-LAX and GDL-LAX still have free food) and basket service with a choice of Hot Sandwiches for Lunch/Dinner flights and no choice for the Breakfast flights. Alaska is saving tons of money from all the service they've axed.

Edit: I haven't worked Alaska to the Lower 48 (besides LAX) in a while. I don't know if they are still serving sandwiches on those flights.

What was considered a "snack" in the past is now considered a "meal" on most domestic U.S. routes.

I imagine in the future someone on this forum will ask, "Which US airline serves the best snack boxes?"

I flew recently YYZ-DFW-SAN with AA, and we got only drinks and pretzels. AA and AC both serve pretzels and drinks for YYZ-ORD, YYZ-LGA, which is acceptable, but I was starving in the YYZ-DFW flight, which is more than 3 h flight.
Cheers

Thanks for the edit - I was about to ask you to remove your foot from your mouth, since ANC-SEA, FAI-SEA and ANC-PDX still have meal service. Last I checked, the YVR-LAX service still offered sandwiches in coach as well.

Frankly, I think WN food service is better than most legacy carrriers' service. On WN flights <2 hours, you get a very good sized bag of wheat things, peanuts, and refilable drinks. On most. legacies you get a small bag of snack mix and 1 round of drinks.

On WN flights >2 hours you get the snack pack with everyhing above plus usually cheese, crackers, and a granola/fruit bar. On 2 hour legacy flights, you still only get the crappy snack mix and soda.

For anyhting greater than 2 hours, I suppose it's hit or miss. The CO food service is probasbly much better at this point (since you get a "meal") but on others, WN is STILL better, expecially compared to AA (you only get snack mix and 1 soda up until 4 (maybe 6) hours).

Thanks for the clarification. I'm still thinking that for a +3 hours flight, that kind of food is really a "snack". But I got your message.

Nope. I work YVR often.... haven't had food in a while. About this time last year- we increased our service on this flight- I'm guessing because of competition. Then it slowly disappeared..... and now is down to the same service offered to LAX from PDX and SEA.

Since it's summertime now- the LAX base is getting more Alaska flying. I'm working a SEA-ANC-FAI trip next week... I'll keep you posted.

I've always liked United's food to and from Hawaii. I haven't flown them on a transcon lately- so I couldn't tell you about that.

Alaska's current choice of sandwiches on it's transcons are awesome! It just changed back not to long ago- the beef sandwich is a winner!
