Cheapest Way To Fly On A 747

Mon May 02, 2005 11:24 am

I've never flown on a 747, so I'd like to try to this summer. Anybody have any suggestions for getting on a 747 as cheaply as possible (doesn't have to be both ways, just one). I would be leaving out of STL (sure would be easy if TW was still around).

Shipping myself via UPS isn't an option.

Funny.

I would check the UA schedules, sometimes they fly 744s between IAD-ORD-DEN-LAX/SFO, the interhub routes, and maybe you can find a cheap seat on flying say STL-ORD-IAD with ORD-IAD being a 744, you would have to work the schedules and see what you come up with.

Dont think I am crazy, but BA flies many 744 to the US, and sometimes there are amazing cheap deals to London (but not during the summer)...maybe that is an alternative.

I'd love to go to London....but going off season isn't practicle.

I guess domestic will be the cheapest, unless BA, LH, or even NW (a 742 would be cool) have a realy good deal.

I don't know though, I'm not very up-to-date on schedules and prices. That's why I asked !  Smile

How much are you willing to spend? How long are you planning on stayin were you are going? Dates?

Gimme a rough answer on those and I'll show you some prices.

Usually Air India JFK-LHR is prety cheap

NW only routes 742s through LAX, HNL and Asia, so you are pretty out of luck there unless you want to go to Japan. BA is probably your best bet as they often offer cheap 2-3 day getaways to London, including hotel, starting at about $300-$350 RT from NYC. They would likely route you on AA from STL to either ORD or JFK, but you would still get a deal. Plus, you would get to see London. UA also offers frequent deals over their E-Fares e-mails. Get on the list and you will likely find something

LOL!  Big grin

My personal advice is to just save-up and then ticket a trip you would want to take anyway, even if the 747 got cancelled. Specific aircraft types can change at a moment's notice, and then what would you do?

I have been on several trips involving various 747's, but all were on intl. service inter/intra Asia, the cheapest of which was around $700. Trips to Europe can be under $350 round-trip, but not during the summer high season.

Hmm. I'll have to keep that in mind. Never seen it pop-up in my usual web searches. Thanks for the tip.

thats right, check www.oribtz.com for flights to/from SFO-ORD...many times you will be able to find a 747 in one direction and a 777 another direction and fares are pretty cheap too....can't beat that!  no

If you will be in Europe try the MAD-TFN-MAD flight with Iberia. They use the A 340-600, A 340-300, B 747-300 and B 747-400 very frequently. Fare is around 100 Euro for return ticket in economy,

Wouldn't mind going to Spain either...been already, though. Haven't been to the UK.

I'll check out the SFO-ORD on UA. Otherwise, I may try to squeeze LHR in during a weekend or something during the off-season.

Ehh, I didn't find any domestic 747 service at all. Am I missing something, or does it not exist at the moment?

Air India JFK-LHR was $646, which is pretty good considering it's during peak season. I guess I could do WN/ATA up to LGA and take the subway over to JFK. Little more than I wanted to spend, though.

I searched the time tables on UA for a domestic 744 route, but I couldn't find anything. I think UA really scaled back on domestic 747 flights.

Lol , its called a joke  Wink

You want to spend alot of money and fly all the way to LHR just to fly a 747?? Man o man. 747's will be around for a very very long time. Why not save up and plan a long trip to a foreign destination and then try and get onto a 747? Dude , flying all the way to the UK is ,IMO, a waste of time just to fly a specific aircraft.

Air NZ has incredibly cheap deals from LAX and SFO to AKL (I think around $660 return). They use 744s. But then, you gotta get to LAX or SFO as well...maybe WN or so?
Try www.site59.com for short trips - they have great deals for Europe, and some might be with 747s!
I agree that BA is certainly one of the best bets - and LHR is great! And you can go and visit Duxford as well - a MUST for every aviation fan. I missed it last time, and I could kill myself for it  banghead
LH uses the 744 on selected routes as well - they might have good deals. My brother is coming over (FRA-YYZ) today, and I was surprised that he'll be on a 744 - I thought LH switched the majority of transatlantic routes to A340...
Keep looking around - even in high season you might get a good deal! What is your time frame anyway?

Cheers
micha
