Largest Airport

Thu May 05, 2005 8:03 am

Size-wise, as in physical size of the airport terminal(s) itself, what is the largest airport in the United States. The world?

My guess for the US is ATL, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have somewhere around 170 gates?

I know DEN, takes up the most space, how much did that airport cost?

The original projected cost was 1.7 billion. When all was said and done, it came in at around 5 billion dollars.

Spacewise, Rhyadh King Khalid International in Rhyadh, Saudi Arabia is the largest, with DEN coming in second.

Do you mean in terms of gates or in terms of total volume of the terminal facilities or area that the terminal cover?

I know AND CURRENT: Denver - International (DEN / KDEN), USA - Colorado">DEN, takes up the most space, how much did that airport cost?

I have read that if you add up all of the real estate that makes up KDEN (which is alot more than is presently used) you could fit ATL, ORD AND DFW and still have some space left over.

Actually inside DEN you could fit the entire city of Boston.

That's gotta hurt taxi times.

Anyway, the question was

not what is the largest acreage of land.

I am looking for a few different answers.

1. what U.S airport is the largest in terms of gates
2. what U.S airport has the largest terminals, or what is the largest airport in sheer size of it's terminal buildings.
3. what foreign airport is the lastgest in terms of gates
4. what foreign airport is the largest in sheer size?

wow, 5 billion for an airport, how did they pay for it? As in, how much of the cost was passed on to taxpayers, what amount did the fed pick up, what amount did the airlines pay.

how did all the baggage cars, etc. get from stapleton to the new airport?

TinPusher,

I would agree with ORD and ATL, but I don't think that DFW would also fit in. The total land area that is part of DFW is also quite large and I thought was only a few square miles less than DEN. I'll see if I can find anything about this.

I think as far as terminal buildings, it would be a toss up between DFW, ORD and ATL.

Not really unless you get the unlucky runway switch while taxiing. The runways were designed so that you could go quickly from the gate to the runway and viceversa with the least amount of taxi possible.

Unfortunately the result of this is an airport configuration that from the air looks like a Swastika.

don't know for sure , but CDG is amazingly big... and guess that the Emirates hub will be the biggest soon, since it need to be big enough for all those Emirates expansions...

DEN has among the highest fees in the country for any airport. The airlines pay for it.

wow, what is the square milage of DEN, I know space wise Boston is a small city, I think around 33 square miles, look at NYC, that is about 300 square miles.

I have been to DFW, ATL and ORD before, they are all different setups, I like the infield terminal setup that ATL has, they may have a lot of gates, but the actual terminal buildingsa re not to bis, same thing with DFW.

I wish I could have seen that, I saw pictures from it, there were 767s flying in formation at 2000 AGL on the way over.

Largest Airport Terminal in the world would be
The Hong Kong International Airport passenger terminal building is 1.3 km. (0.8 miles) long and covers 550,000 sq. m. (135.9 acres). The design incorporates a Y-shaped concourse and is the world's largest single airport building.

Just the baggage hall of this gargantuan building is as big as the Yankee Stadium in New York (it could hold five Boeing 747s parked wing tip to wing tip). Served by 48 aircraft parking stands with boarding gates and air bridges, the terminal has a design capacity of 45 million passengers a year, arriving on 460 flights every day. There are 3 km (1.8 miles) of moving walkways, 55,000 m² (13.59 acres) of glass cladding and around 117,000 m² (28.9 acres) of carpeting.

Interesting as well Longest Airport Conveyor Belt
Denver International Airport, Colorado, USA, boasts the largest airport baggage conveyor system in the world. It has 9 km (6 miles) of conveyor belts.

Most of the land at DEN will never be used by the airport. It is mostly buffer region to prevent NIMBYs from building on it and then complaining about the noise. Despite this they have violated noise agreements with surrounding communities in the past.

Taxi times are often better than airports like DFW, ORD or LAX where planes have to taxi across active runways or have inadequate space around the terminals.

I was told that the employees have to pay a share too in a tax on people who work at DEN. Can anyone verify this?

This has been mentioned before. HKG is the largest single terminal in the world, but most of the largest airports have multiple terminals and several of them have combined space larger than HKG's terminal.

The space of the terminal is not that easy to answer. Does an on site hotel count? Parking structures? Rail stations? Are only enclosed spaces included or are other spaces included.

What is the Guinness Book of World Records entry? I do not recall that there was one for largest terminal. Even counting gates is difficult since some gates have full waiting areas and jetways, some share parts and some are just doors. Some airports have terminals and gates that are not currently utilized, but may be in the future.

There may not be a definitive answer. There multiple measures of "tallest building." I would seem like you should just simply measure the building, but because there are several buildings not far apart in height the tallest are defined mostly by the one with the highest spires and antennas. The replacement for the World Trade Center will supposedly be the tallest building when it is completed (unless someone else beats them to it) but nearly a third of the height is an empty spire. The Empire State Building has much higher occupied floors and observation decks.

If I had to take a guess, I would say that DFW has the largest terminal space because it sure seems like a death march when connecting.

Wow glad CO was smart and Bailed out ...Too bad UA refused to pick up CO's SYD-HNL-DEN-LGW route it was a Classic...how many gates were "lost" when DEN moved from Stapleton to DIA ??? More money and less gates great idea..

I Do think DEN/ORD/SFO Are most of UA problems Excessive costs of Doing Biz and Excessive Cost of Living...but not much they can do about it...
