Thread For United Airlines Fans

Wed May 11, 2005 6:59 am

Sure you can escape to the rest of the aviation forum and find every second thread to be about United and their problems. I just wanted to start a thread for those of us who actually don't just see another airline when we fly United. Sure, United has its faults, but so do all other airlines. I would appreciate if those who want to bash United and talk about their future stay away from this thread and post in all of the other appropriate threads.

I really don't know if United will survive or not, and I don't think anyone here does. Sure, it is not looking good for them right now, but I think they can recover.

I am a frequent mileage runner, and initially tried to chose a good airline to accure these miles on. I eventually settled for United, with a little bit of skepticism. Looking back at it, I have absolutely NO regret. I have NEVER had a bad experience with them. This is not to say that they do not have their bad apples, but I simply have not come upon them. Here are a few things which I feel separate United from the others:

  • EXCELLENT service on the ground and in the air. No matter which employee, they have ALWAYS been very friendly.
  • EXCELLENT frequent flier program. I love the systemwide upgrades and regional upgrades.
  • Channel 9. Nothing beats listening to ATC.
  • Great fleet, including the 777 and the 747(not to mention no MD80's.
  • Amazing route network with great coverage in interesting areas
  • Great first class, especially with good food and features.
  • Great alliance which really will get you where you want to go.

There are many more things which others can contest to, but these are my major points. I, for one, will book and fly on United until their planes are chained up and no longer flying.

Your thoughts about United?(If you have something bad to say, at least do it in a constructive manner)

i gave it 5 more posts before the grim reapers come in.

UA has lots of problems right now, but the airline's merits that you cited - along with other factors - make it much more worthwhile for the airline to survive than to fold.

I like United too. I like where they fly and thier fleet, NO MD80s. When I did fly United I always felt safe and the employees were very proffestional. I don't know if they will survive but this week is supposed to be critical to them because they have some deadlines at least thats what the local news said. I have no idea where United went wrong but perhaps they were paying their employees a little too much and maybe they weren't using their fleet efficiently. I do hope that an airline that big and with many connections around the world doesn't have to go down because many will suffer.

As many of you already know, I use to work for UA, this was my first airline experience, and even in other jobs ( Business Travel) I still had the feeling I was part of the family. UA will always be my favorite US Airline. ( And I've flown all the 'big' carriers ) Their service is just special, like SQ in Asia.

United Airlines has been the carrier of choice for me ever since I began traveling for business and leisure activites. Their hub at Chicago Ohare always fascinates me and the employees are some of the best in the industry. Best wishes and Godspeed to UAL if the future..

FULL SUPPORT TO THE LAST DAY!!

I was born into a United family, and feel like a part of that family to this day. Days like this are difficult, as my Dad is affected by it, but he knew it was coming, just like many others. I can only hope that clearer heads will prevail in all this, and that UA can finally move forward one way or the other. It's been a difficult 5 years to say the least, so hopefully the roller coaster will slow down somewhat and people can reevaluate where they stand. All I can ask is that those working for UA who don't want to be there anymore will leave so that those who really do want to be there can help rebuild and continue on. Remember, Continental Airlines was in a similar position, in BK twice, and look where they're at now.

Today wasn't Ch. 7 folks, but hopefully skipping ahead a few pages to another beginning. The sooner we get out of Ch. 11, the better. The worst thing that could happen is that the restructuring isn't finished this time around, and that UAL would have to refile several years down the road, and the chances of reemerging a 2nd time are slim. I know of two airlines, one is still here, one isn't. Whether US reemerges and continues on is anyone's guess.

Regardless of what happens in the next few days, weeks, months, or years, some of the best memories I have are directly, and even indirectly, associated with United Airlines. They are and always will be a HUGE part of my life, and NO ONE can take that away...not a judge, not a corporate raider, not protest strikes. UA has made their fair share of mistakes...both sides have. The test now is whether the company is strong enough to move beyond it. My thinking is yes, I hope I'm proven right in the long run.

Although I worked for one of UA's biggest competitors, I do have several friends at UA and I wish them all the best. I have flown on UA several times on buddy passes, or ID90's or prize passes. I have always been treated very courteously, and professionally. Heck they even usually even upgraded me! Best of luck to all at UA. I really dont believe the unions have the balls to walk. I really dont believe their will be a strike.

I've flown Star Alliance carriers almost exclusively for the past 10 years. I've seen a remarkable turn around in UA customer service in the last 4 years. UA went from being the airline I loved to hate to the airline I appreciated the most.

I just wish UA employees would realize that today's events are actually a bailout for most employees. The pensions were already lost. UA's pensions were underfunded by $10 BILLION dollars. There is no way that anyone was going to get anything more than pennies on the dollar. This was the absolute reality of the situation before the judges decision. With the PBGC taking over, UA employees will at least have something. It is not what was promised. True. But UA had already lost any ability to keep that promise. UA could have gone Chapter 7, and still could if rational heads don't prevail.

I pray that doesn't happen.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Count me in as a big fan of UA. IMO they have the best route network of any U.S. carrier. They cover 5 continents! Not to mention being a member of the Star Alliance (the best network IMO). I think UA needs to focus more on their Int'l routes, the competition is just too brutal right now in the U.S. If the strikes occur things will be shetchy, but I still have faith.

My two favorite reasons for being a UA fan: Ch. 9 and the 747-400.

I worked 2+ years for UAX, because UA doesn't fly to my city.  Sad I really enjoyed the service I experienced when non-reving on UA. As a side note I interviewed with UA at ORDEX last week, I'm hoping to hear something soon...fingers crossed!

Let's see, domestic 747-400's, 767's, and 777's...hot meals on transcons, free headsets with incredible music selections, extraordinarily friendly and efficient people working for them, very aesthetically pleasing terminals (not like some very blAAnd decors), and for me, a trip to the cockpit of N199UA (a 747-422)...I LOVE the friendly skies!! Every time I fly United, I am pleasantly reminded of what air travel used to be like.

It saddens me no end to see the problems United is having. It is just a shame that there isn't a market for an Economy Plus airline - I'd definitely pay extra knowing the service would be a bit better. How about y'all?

I think this is an awesome thread. I too have a father that was affected by today's ruling. I can only hope that most of the UAL employees understand this is a difficult and hard thing to do today. I remember growing up and flying to Hawaii many times on United. This is truly a world class airline. The other threads seem to be full of people that just think of themselves. I wish UAL the best of luck and I see it coming out stronger. Please people, use your heads and don't kill a great company. United has great cities, great hubs, awesome gates, and GREAT PEOPLE!!!! You are all truly wonderful people. Show the world and the nation you care and you want this company to thrive. We are all praying for you.

Wow, a positive thread. That's a nice change.

My Dad worked for UA his entire career; it was my Summer job after high school; it was where I met my husband; I still have a half-dozen friends flying for UA; and I'm a loyal 1K.

Do I want to see the company go down? Absolutely not. UA has had a great, albeit sometimes imperfect, history and with the right restructuring could really be a great competitor again.

One thing I've noticed over the years is the large numbers of 1Ks and Premier Execs who go out of their way to help out as UA ambassadors - and how many times have I done the same? Answer other pax's questions, guide them through the hub airport, help them use easy check-in... there are a lot of people out there who really want to help UA succeed and we'll stand by the employees and the company.

Well I will never forget the time I was let up in the cockpit of a 747 between LAX-DEN. I was an UM, and about 30 minute after departure one of the FA's asked me If I would like to see the cockpit. It was truly an unforgetable experience! I wish the best to UAL, its employees, and anyone who has been affected by whats going on right now.

I'll say one thing about UA, they are my choice airline for transcon flights. Every time I have ever had to go to San Fran or LA, they are always my choice out of BOS over AA, B6 and HP, who all offer daily tanscon flights to California out of BOS. I'll be flying them BOS-SFO-BOS this June. and
BOS-LAX-BOS later in the month.

sticking with the positives, who likes the new livery for UA? I think every livery they have ever had has been great.

For those who travel internationally, there is something special about going to the airport for your flight home and seeing the flag on the tail and UNITED across the fuselage. The feeling is one of having some of the comforts of home picked up and brought to a foreign land, especially when you have had a particularly rough time on said trip. When you board, you see friendly faces, proficient service and feel safe. Regardless of the flash and dash of other airlines, there is deep running sense of quality and pride at UA, not like some rent a crew airlines; from ground crew to pilots to flight attendants, there is a sense or meaning.

It is unfortunate that people have to take cuts, make sacrifices and shift their expectations, but such is life, there are no guarantees. The employees of UA will be judged by how they respond and their resilience. From past experiences I have had, I have hope they will do what is right.

Nice thread.

As an Aussie in the IT business there have been periods when I felt I almost commuted to Silicon Valley, UA was the way to go (That other trans pac carrier doesn't go to SFO) but that was only the start, their service and attitude always made it a pleasure to travel with them.

A colleague who always flew QF/AA to DFW was kind of peeved at being forced to fly UA as it was now corporate policy as his company is now HQd in the bay area.. on his return he expressed amazement at the experience and wondered why he had suffered through so many indignities from other carriers in the past. I could only say.. told you so!

Good luck to all at UAL

I love UA, not only because they are the best airline in the US, but their fleet, route, seats, especially international seats on domestic runs, service, channel nine, free headphones, good tasting food and great entertainment.

I have never flown UA, nor do i know much about them, except the obvious. But i have always thought of UA as the biggest airline. they have so many flights to so many destinations all over the world, you would never think they would end up like this. i think its sad how an airline like UA could go from the top, to almost the very bottom. for now, they are in trouble, but i think they will find a way out of this rut.
i always wanted to fly UA, like on the 777 or 747, hopefully i will someday

Even though i have lately given my travel to NW/CO/DL because no one besides NW serves GFK... United is still my favorite airline. Having flown them more than anyone else - i miss seeing all their planes at O'Hare (where i am from - Chicago), and managed to fly them on my last trip to the bay area from here - drove all the way to Fargo. FAR-DEN-LAX-OAK-DEN-FAR. Quite the trip. And i felt at home with UA in snowing Denver, or sunny and hot LA.

Hope they make it

Like Steven I too grew up in a United Familiy. My father got my cousin her interview at UA she still works for UA now at ORD. Her recomendation got me my interview. Someday I hope to return the favor to another family member.

We employees get worked up and upset not because we're uncareing but becasue we care so much. We care what the customers experience is and are embarassed when it isn't up to our own high standards. We care that this company has a future so that our children can enjoy the friendly skies.

We all were shaken to the core when our airplanes with our customers, our responcibility was used to attack our country. Many still carry around that pain.

UA has always been the only airline I could work for. I can't imagine wearing another uniform and looking at UA planes taking off from another POV. So as I prepare to leave the industry, because its the industry that I'm really sick and tired of, I will always choose UA first.

Your thoughts about United?(If you have something bad to say, at least do it in a constructive manner)

1. Economy plus is awfully hard to get into if you are a non-elite. Solution: UA would make a lot of  dollarsign   dollarsign   dollarsign  by charging $25 to prebook Economy Plus seats to non-elites (who would pay for that? I would) would make me fly UA.

2. HUGE backups on the jetway EVERY TIME, for me at least! UA needs to drop the "zone boarding" system and adopt an AS-like "boarding all rows" general boarding. Sounds like a moshpit, but it is always quite civilized.

But I do like the audio programs and Channel 9.

There is my constructive criticism.

I am a very adminant United Airlines fan. They are my hometown carrier (Washington, D.C.!!) and my lifelong carrier. I've also had nice experiences on American and Delta, but I still prefer United. I have to say, I have always felt safe on a United flight, the crews are always professional, and usually friendly, and fun to chat with. Though United has it's dinosaurs, so do the others, INCLUDING Singapore! (gasp!). Though no-one in my opinion can beat the service and professionalism of ANA (partially because of the Japanese work ethic), UA definately beats NH in terms of comfort (at least on the 777s). I also think, despite everyone in Civil aviation's habit (to compare UA to Northwest or Frontier), that UA has the best route network, and hubs out of all US carriers. They network out of the most sophisticated, beautiful and important cities, but do not neglect those in which they can't have a major presence. Compare that to NW whose hubs are Detroit and Minneapolis... that's useful for people in Arizona! What about DL's Atlanta, (former Dallas), Cincinnatti, Salt Lake City (sorry, but random!) and JFK...

Anyways, I really do hope UA makes it through the storm (I think they can), because US air travel woundn't be the same without them (not to mention a perfect fleet: Big Boeings and smaller Airbus')

Flown with United on two trips, London-Chicago-Denver-Chicago-London and London-Washington-Orlando-Washington-London, and they are amongst the best flights I have ever had. I loved channel 9, recieved superb service and had truely enjoyable flights, especially the 777 flights.

I hope United can come out of any troubles and stay in business, I have been trying to fly them again but find their fares very expensive from London so haven't had the chance to  Sad

That is not exactly true. That's how UA prints it in the rules and stuff... but that's someho never worked with me. I have over 100 thousand miles in my UA account, but I'm still non-elite. And yet somehow I still manage to pre-book into economy plus. Hmm..

Well, this is constructive at least.

This would piss off the elites if their space was taken away. Do you recommend making the eco+ cabin larger, or what?

2. HUGE backups on the jetway EVERY TIME, for me at least! UA needs to drop the "zone boarding" system and adopt an AS-like "boarding all rows" general boarding. Sounds like a moshpit, but it is always quite civilized.

I don't think this is a major problem, and I have never experienced this.

Im so glad to read this.Im so sick of reading negative things about ua.It seems to me that a lot of people cant wait to see ua fold. Most of them have probrlay never flown ua.We all have our fav airlines and IM proud to say mine is ua flew my first long haul with them.lhr jfk.So theres a bit of sentiment there.THEY CAN TURN THINGS AROUND good luck to all at ua.All though IM upset they stopped using 744 on 930/931 or is it just a seasonal thing.

thank you for flying united

Well, there is one way to get it back in there...start a new one!

Ok let's clear up some stuff about economy plus here:

To pre-book seats in Economy you must (either):
- be UA elite
- have a FULL (refundable ; usually higest priced) fare ticket (Y, B, M, E, and U)
- be a United Gloabal Services member
or
-be a Star Alliance gold and/or silver member.

More info can be found at: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,1314,00.html
---
I couple days ago I booked a couple flight on UA from JAX to SEA (for 2 pax) using my UA FF, miles. Because no "saver" fares were avilable (25,000 miles) I had to buy two "standard(full)" fares (40,000 miles). Because it was a "full" fare (Y) I was able to choose economy plus seats when I was booking. And no, I am not UA or Star Alliance elite or anything like that.

I love United. It all started out when I start flying when I was around 4ish 5ish out of DES (I used to live in Des Moines  Smile ) and go to HDN and/or DEN and stuff like that. We would ALWAYS fly UA and I ALWAYS loved them! I had never really flown another airlines besides UA when I lived in Iowa, except for the occasional Continental flight. Unfourtunatly, that all changed when we moved to JAX. I try the best I can to support UA by flying them as much as I can, but sometime's it's just not an option. Like for my trip to DEN this summer I had a whole bunch of unused tickets to re-issue on DL so I had to fly them. And than other times, when a flight it on CO for $300 USD and on UA it's $500, sometimes it dosen't give me that much flexibility. But you'll be happy to know my dad booked the same routing-kind on my JAX - DEN and DEN - JAX trip on UA using his FF miles. Now that I think about it, free flights isn't really helping the airline at all. Hmmm..

I love United too. The only airline I fly is UA and that is going to stay that way. I honestly don't think they will go under, and the will get through this difficult time eventually.

Living in STL, I can't go many places without connections on UA but I do think they should add some more flights out here. I think that may be one of their problems they don't create a financially good route map and schedule. Example of a flight they could add: They could add flights out of STL to SFO. The only airline that flies there from STL is AA and they can make those prices anything they want. It would be good to have some competition on that market. They could easily fill a 757. A relative of mine that works for UA here in STL thinks the same.

It would definitely be a sad day indeed if UA would go under. I hope this never happens.
