Would WN Ever Consider The A380?

Thu May 19, 2005 5:08 am

I was thinking of a crazy topic to start, and I think this one ranks up there.

It just gives me a headache thinking about unassigned seating on such aircraft.

Well, I suppose I'll start.

News Headline: Southwest to acquire Airbus A380

What's is that melting? Oh, it must be hell freezing over!  Smile

Why?

The question is legitimate, and deals with CIVIL aviation.

The original question is a bit of a far-fetched possibility.

Never say never.

They just need to review the fiasco that was the PSA/L-1011 deal first!

I just don't see it happening. Can't even think of how they would use them.
I'm just happy that RR ratings can't be in negative numbers!

Because of the "This thread is open for jokes" part.

No - far-fetched would be an idea like "Martians are landing on Earth in two hours and will take the human race on a fun-ride through the universe".

That's far-fetched.

WN with A380s? That's certainly one for the "Never" department.

They will base the 380's at Love Field for service within the state of Texas and to the neighboring states. I can see it now. Direct, no change A380 service from Midland/Odessa to Little Rock. Talk about bringing in the money!!!

Things you will see first:

1) "Reverend" (and I use that term loosely) Fred Phelps shirtless in a Gay Pride festival,

2) The Dixie Chicks performing at the Bush family BBQ,

3) Osama Bin Laden praying at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem,

4) Americans admitting that they eating too much (and exercising too little).

Does that settle it?

I can see the headlines:

"Southwest purchases 2 A380 with option for 3 more"

And in the story, they announce that they will substitute the 737s on the DAL-HOU route with an A380. The second A380 would be used on the LAS-LAX route.

Anyway, to use a quote from another A.net member, this will happen when airborne pigs soar over the frozen landscape of Hell.

Open seating on the 737s are bad enough as it is....

The real question is whether WN will consider anything other than a 737. They are not even considering RJs like B6 because of the higher costs. They will probably continue to use 737s or some future variant for decades to come. The low cost outweighs the negatives. The benefits of having a common fleet are considerable.

There are disadvantages of course, with WN's small overhead bins and narrow seats (compared to the A320), along with inflexibility in capacity.

Anybody care to come up of a list of benefits to WN of adding an aircraft type versus staying a 737 stumpy exclusive?

ConcordeLoss,

WN President Colleen Barrett just called to respond to your question.

Scenario: HP/US merge, fail. UA finally dead. NW retires DC-9's. Delta BK, then gone.

Who's gonna replace all that lost capacity?

WN of course! Anyone flying NYC-LAX will have to drive to ISP, catch the 73G to BWI and the A380 to LAX (via BNA and PHX). They'll put vending machines in the central seating area so you won't starve to death.

WN as a major flag carrier? That would be a national embarassment.

The real question is whether WN will consider anything other than a 737.

At the very least... there are indications that WN is seriously evaluating the 737-800 and -900X for delivery in 2006-2007

Quoting AADC10 (Reply 17):
Anybody care to come up of a list of benefits to WN of adding an aircraft type versus staying a 737 stumpy exclusive?

One obvious benefit would be the ability to add new markets.

However, there dozens of points WN could open service to without changing their business plan and without leaving their 737-300/700 comfort bubble. They could grow for some time before being forced into a new type for growth reasons.

It also would be a great place from witch to watch the end of the world! With peanuts!!!
