Which Airlines Would You Merge?

Sun May 22, 2005 3:38 am

Given the power and money to do so, which airlines would you merge to form a giant?

Aer Lingus and British Midland, It probably would not make a giant. So, Virgin Atlantic would make it become one of the Worlds Greatest Transatlantic Airlines.

I would like to see UA,CO,US,DL,NW and AA all to merge to create a massive US airline Big grin

Otherwise I would like to see EK and Bmi to merge, all of EK's financial power could go into Bmi Big grin

I have this fantasy that one day the governments of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago will get together and realize that the best way for JM and BW to survive would be to merge. If it were in my power, I would merge these two airline (and maybe entice Liat to join as well) to create a feasible caribbean airline. set up hubs in Barbados and at one of the Jamaican airports. I also fantasize that this airline will try to attract the premium-paying high yield passengers and not the bottom-dollar paying tourists.

IB and FR. Thus, they would not argue about the subsidies issue anymore. Anyway, nobody would notice the difference in service when flying one or the other airline...  stirthepot

DL, NW, CO! I would call them Delta Intercontinental - or something like that - to reflect their global presence. Plus it pays homage to DL and CO, the NW name has to go since it implies such a small portion of the world.

They would have coverage throughout the US and a strong presence in Asia and Europe as well. NW's profitable, AFAIK, cargo business wouldn't hurt either. Some fleet commonality issues since NW has strayed from the Boeing stable and CO and DL have only Boeing airplanes. One thing not helping DL right now is their lack of a strong international presence - where big money can be made. I know they have decent flights to Europe, but in Asia there are not many. NW, on the other hand, has a large Pacific presence, which will be complimented by CO's presence in Micronesia. Perhaps with this new company, they could expand more into South America and the Middle East as well, to be truly global, in a big way.

Except for the fact that NW is a well know name not only in North America, but Asia, more so important then CO or DL.

JAL and ANA. Together they would become the world's largest operator of the 747! (I think around 105 or something...)

Or, LH and SK. SK needs better leadership... (and more money  cry  Wink

Come to think of it, it's not a bad idea. But what are the possibilities of it actually happening?

My choice would be TA,Lan Chile,MX, and NW. Inmagine that. And to top it off, start up a seperate cargo company.

actually, the more I think about it -- bmi and Aer Lingus. Both are now offering similar short haul (LCC style) systems and both have small (subscale) 330 long haul ops. Merge them and you would begin to have a (slightly) more plausible long haul strategy: with one stop, Irish and UK customers could fly to Antigua, St Lucia, Barbados, New York, Chicago, Washington, Boston, Vegas and LAX plus India. That's better than current.

AA/DL should move in together as should CO/UA, they have a lot in common, now that US is starting to hang around with that HP fella. Afterwards, let NW hang out by himself. Then there's AS who has a bunch of friends but would rather stick to himself, and WN can go sit in the corner letting his stacks of money keep him company.

Hmm.... I would merge EK, QF, AA, BA & ANA for a Giant International Airline that flies basically EVERYWHERE.

If it were just two.... I'd merge ANA & SIA to form "Pan-Asian Airways"

Some of my thoughts, but from a fleet compatibility standpoint only.

JetBlue & Frontier...all Airbus narrowbodies.
Northwest & United...mostly Pratt power.
American & Delta...imagine all those MD twins together in one fleet!
Alaska & AirTran...lots of 717s & 737NGs. A very young fleet.
America West & ATA...just for the hell of it. Big grin

I have been wanting to see NW and US hook up. Seems to make the most sense to me based on route structure and a/c type. Even after HP + US, it's still not a bad idea.

Since when did they offer a RR powered Airbus A320/A319?? The United A32x's are powered by IAE. FlagshipAZ is only saying "mostly pratt" because of the fact that the NW Airbuses would eclipse the United's.

In the good old days - how about Air Europe and BCal - then throw in Dan-Air London for good measure.

This would have created a real competitor to BA on aboth long and short-haul routes.
