Airport With The Greatest Variety Of Airlines?

Wed May 25, 2005 9:28 am

I was wondering what airport in the world has the greatest variety of different airlines with scheduled service to it.

It prolly is JFK, LHR, or CDG.

JFK is the number one destination for most airlines. On the other hand it is across the Atlantic, which means it is hard for small European and Asian airlines to get to. So a European airport might be better off? LHR is probably the number one destination in Europe. CDG is in there as well. On the other hand, all 3 airports are in big cities that have multiple international airports. So maybe that gives the trophy to other airports like FRA, AMS, LAX?

Does anyone have any numbers to substantiate any of my thoughts up there?

Well, while I was waiting in line for my gate in LHR a couple of weeks ago, I counted 82 different airlines on the Terminal Guide board.

I would imagine that it would be hard to beat that. I think I also read somewhere that about 193 cities are served from LHR.

Talk about variety and competition!

Please see:

Which Airport Is Served By The Most Carriers? (by Nycfuturepilot Apr 22 2005 in Civil Aviation)

In the USA it's JFK, followed by ORD, LAX, MIA and ATL - it's close for second place after JFK depending on the day/week/month you are looking at.

You've gotta have over 70 different airlines to be in the top 10 or so.

Just went to the websites of the different airports, and i checked the different airlines there. Here's the count:

JFK: 79 (according to www.panynj.gov)

LHR: 84 (according to www.baa.com)

CDG: cannot find any numbers for Paris, page doesn't seem to be working properly

FRA: 158 (according to www.flughafen-frankfurt.de) But I definitly don't believe that number is correct. And I know for a fact that that number includes non-scheduled services (for example never heard or seen an airline named Enkor in FRA)

AMS: 115 (according to www.schiphol.nl)

LAX: 71 (according to www.los-angeles-lax.com)

Can anyone give more exact numbers on the actual regularly scheduled flights to those airports?

For the US I'd say JFK and/or LAX.
