Aer Lingus

It isn't very original once you know what it means in Irish (Gaelic) ....just means Air Fleet !!!!!

Plus I don't know why all these airlines now have this BLUE in their airline names. Same with those caled flyxx. sure an airline will soon be called FLYCHEAP

Aloha is great...so so many good slogans referencing the name have been used:

"The Spirit Moves Us"
"Where the Spirit of Aloha Flies Higher"
"Your Spirit. Your Airline."

Aloha!
Aloha Airlines - The Spirit Moves Us. Gone but NEVER Forgotten. Aloha, A Hui Hou!

I would love to see America West and USAirways rebranded as USAir.

It's a very crisp, clean name. Fresh, yet casually elegant.

A reputable design and branding firm could do wonders for its image.

I wonder why no mention has been made of the common Latinate name type Aero XXXX? There's even one 'proper' "Aero Airlines", an Estonian subdivision of Finnair, recycling the old grandfathered Finnair name 'Aero' they'd kept frozen.

Worst had to be Air Sul of Portugal - it's a phonetic thing.....

IIRC , there was a Korean airline called Air Seoul - same thing... (was this what Asiana called themselves at first before they realised?)
I don't like signatures...

Hi

Quoting Justinpower (Reply 23):

Touch and Go got rebranded into Conveyor Airlines (no joking - albeit cyrillic spelling was 'Konveyer' as their 'C' is of course our 'S'). Not that it would have been that much better as a name... Tu-154M RA-85756 flew as such in Summer 1996 before going on to Continental Airways and finally Dagestan Airlines.

In the past, the worst name in terms of marketing that springs to my mind was Goa Way in India (Fokker 27s). I wonder why nobody realised the obvious implication to any customer coming through the door or calling. "Hi, welcome, go away..."

From a recent visit in Singapore: One of the best chosen recent airline names must be Tiger Air (A320s). Sitting in the famous observation lounge at Changi 1 inbetween flights, I observed families with children coming up the elevator in about 30 second intervalls. Immediate reaction in every single case: "Oh mommy/papa, look. Tiger Air, there's Tiger Air!" and off they went like little rockets. Nothing else counted. Nothing, not even the Jumbo Jet at the gate next door...

Cheers, Lukas

for some reason having having an ocean in an airline name makes it seem kind of classy to me: Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific..

For bad names, here's a few awards:

The "We Didn't Consider What It Would Sound Like In English" Award"
Phuket Air
Wizz Air
SCAT Airlines
(a three-way tie)

(A consolation prize to Aer Lingus, although that's probably more like "we knew what it would sound like but just didn't care..." Big grin

The "Treads On The Nerves For Being Too Damn Cutsie" Award:
bmibaby

The "In English We Capitalize Company Names, You Insipid Twits!" Award:
bmibaby
oneworld (yes, it's an alliance, not an airline, but close enough...)

(B6 doesn't tie, 'cause they only use the lower-case "j" in the trademark...when they write the name out, they capitalize it. Close call, though.)

the best names are the ones that sound like theyve been around forever, and will stick around forever (even if its an illusion!), ie. Virgin Atlantic, Continental, United etc.

worst are the ones that you have a sneaky suspicion may not be around when the time comes for your return flight: Ted, Jazz, Song etc etc

AirTran - Sounds like a Vietnamese airline. Needs a better name for such a good airline.

Continental - I read that it translates well into so many languages

    Personally I love geographical names:

    Pacific Southwest
    Pacific East Air
    Western Pacific
    Eastern
    Northwest
    Southwest
