A.net Conference...Will There Be Any?!

Thu Jun 02, 2005 3:59 pm

It just struck me that would it be possible to hold an A.net Conference. Lets say... all the members would pay online where they would receive an individual identity no(for the conference). On the other hand an acceptable date(e.g. end 2005) and venue (e.g. London) would be selected where the meeting would be held regarding various issues facing aviation today. Members may be able to express their views by presenting Abstracts at the meet and discussions would follow. Special programmes would also be held. More than all these, all of us would have a chance to meet each other, talk about our aviation interests (Till now our only source of contact being the Forum,Chat, and e-mail).
I just think that it might work if taken into consideration, but it maybe just my foolish dream according to you.
Hope Mr Johan hears this.
What's your view?!

Let's have a US meet. How about DEN, LAX, ORD, IAD, or something like that?

An a.net conference might be an excellent idea but someone will need to overcome all the hurdles, such as where it is to be held, topics to be covered, presenters, date etc.

As someone who has organised professional conferences in the past, I would envisage the following:

  • It would have to be held at a venue close to a major airport, such as LHR or LGW if the UK was selected.
  • You would need to accurately estimate expected numbers as this would dictate size of room available
  • The venue cost alone would probably be circa £75 per delegate, to include room hire, lunch, plus two servings of tea/coffee. Audio-visual, advertising, administration, organiser's and speakers' fees would all be extra, not to mention insurance cover which alone could be over £2,000.
  • You could invite "sponsors" and exhibitors to the event. Sponsorship could bring in £30,000 or more in return for allowing sponsors to have space to sell or promote their services.
  • There would be thousands of topics to choose. I would probably opt for presentations by the likes of Rod Eddington, Geoff Dixon, Robert Milton, Tim Clark and MOL
  • There could be parallel sessions, so you could choose which topic to join in. We could ask Pe@rson and JGHP1A to be team leaders!
  • There would be the A vs. B slanging match to round off the event
  • There would be an opportunity to view and buy airline merchandise, airline books etc Perhaps an optional site visit before or after the main event, or maybe even charter an aircraft for a short ride
  • A social reception and dinner the day before with guest speaker?

    Major problems:

    • How many a.net members would attend bearing in mind that they would not only have to pay the conference fee but also travel, hotel and other expenses and probably take 2-3 days leave?
    • Who would underwrite any loss?
    • Choice of venue? I think that even if we hired a 747 for the event, using the IFE from which delegates could select the talk they wanted to hear, individual climate control booths for all and excellent meals/refreshments, there would still be arguments as to which airline to use, which airport to fly from etc.

Overall, I think it is feasible and would be very attractive.

London should be selected as it is at the crossroads of the far East and West. Thus it will be much more sensible to held it at London Paris, etc as it would be easy for non-American a.netters to reach the Conference. Distance should be a major factor in determining how many will attend and how many wont..

annual airliners.net conference is not necessary. bi-annual, maybe. I would attend the FIRST conference and feel it for myself. i have little doubt airliners.net can afford a freelance sign language interpreter for 2-3 days......

I think one should be held in London, and one near the Canada/USA
boarder somewhere. Anyway, if there is one, I'm coming!  Smile

What about 1 in each continent? That way costs could be limited, ie we over here would not have to fly to the cold UK, and we would meet locals.

Webcasting is also possible from each venue. I kow that there is an airshow at SYD every few years, so maybe it could be tied into that. The last 1 I went to was excellent. I think it was only a gold coin donation (goes to charity) for entrance, but I would have paid a lot more.

I'm happy to travel, as long as there is a bar close by!!!! LOL.
