VS Or BA - Who Do You Choose?

Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:05 pm

Hi there,

The contenders for the nations leading carrier are both VS and BA, who do you choose?

Personally speaking I will choose VS over BA every time with out fail. I love the image that Virgin have as a company, and I love the leading force behind it all, S.R.B. Virgin Atlantic Airways to me are this young, classy, non-chav airline and that is why they get my vote every time. I certainly cannot wait to try some of their Premium Classes!

I'm looking forward to your answers!

I vote VS, but BA does come in very close behind!

I think that VS and BA are one of the top airlines in the world!

I think VS does attract way more chavs than BA...I think it is the LGW South factor.

I'd also say they were more gimmicky, as opposed to classy.

VS, no questions asked. BA does not do it for me, as I have mentioned in many other posts!

I love everything about Virgin, the fleet, the seats (although i've never had the chance to sit in them, but they look nice  Wink). Most of all I love the brand image, 'Virgin' is a great name, and I love the ads, such as the 'If you wanted to sleep with him, you'd have married him', lol. Also i love the slogans on the back on the A346 G-VSHY, 'Mine is bigger than yours', also the 'Virgin seeks travel companion(s)'...

They are great, one of the possible carrier moves (if i don't set up my own airline or move to Canada), would be to work for Virgin Atlantic. I mean, what other CEO sents EVERY one of him employees in every part of the group a Christmas Present?

I would choose VS over BA. I has nothing to do with the service or the planes of either airline as I have only ever been on a BA flight to Italy. It is to do with SRB. He started his business empire from very humble beginnings and has built it up himself in the face of some very stiff competition. I have nothing but admiration for the guy and would therefore choose his airline over BA.

One thing I would add is I am not keen on is the attitude of the VS FAs. I get the impression from many reports that they are trying to be your mates during the flight. While I see no problem with staff obviously enjoying their work I get the impression this goes a step further. My father who has flown with BA on business very regularly took a flight with VS at short notice and found a similar attitude, which verged on being unprofessional.

This somewhat ties in with an experience I had in Washington DC hotel, I was waiting for my car to take me to Dulles when a load of VS staff turn up in the lobby, as their rooms are not quite ready (this was early afternoon) they hang around. They loosen off their uniforms, unbuttoned jackets and I hear a group of them, including a female FA talking rather loudly about a rather intimate night (in rather too much detail....the way he was going down on her, blowjob techniques et al) with another colleague. Although I hardly believe this is way all VS staff conduct themselves bearing in mind they were in full uniform and there were young children nearby I thought this was extremely unprofessional and certainly tainted my view of the airline. The same would have been said for any other airline crew had I witnessed the same behaviour.

Are you really going to call your airline Toerag? (as per your profile  Wow! )

lol, maybe! well its actually Project Toerag. I called it that, but now i like the name so it may well be Toerag. Its part of the marketing idea for the airline.

- A different livery, one that stands out.
- A name people will notice as its different.

However, depending on how I and the other 2 founding members feel at the launch it may be something else...

My feeling is that Virgin may have more panache but BA is just more polished and professional.

For economy, I don't know who I'd choose, but probably Virgin.

For premium economy, I'd choose BA, unless I knew I was going to get upgraded with VS.

For business class travel, I'd choose Virgin's Upper Class Suite over BA's flat bed and would choose BA's flat bed over VS's Upper Class Seat.

For truly premium travel, I'd choose BA's First Class over just about anything, including my own G550 (if I had one).

There are some things that I prefer about Virgin. For instance, the existence of the limousine transfer with the J fare. The massage on board. The good looking F/As. The fact that you get 1.5x mileage with Premium Economy as opposed to BA's 1.25 (i think its that). The V:Port system and the Clubhouse.

But there are other things that I prefer about BA. For instance, the absence of A340s in the fleet. The RB211s on the 744s and 763s and 752s, the fact that BA can take me on short haul as well as long haul. The well-kept interiors, even on BNLA! The blue colour scheme, the molton brown spa and lastly, what I consider to be fantastic service.

All in all, I like both carriers. But I think that if my life were to flash before my eyes my ticket to wherever I am going would be on BA.

BA all the way. Much as I dislike them (I work for BACX!) I will say they are far more efficient and polished than VS.

BA... though I am biased!

I've had good experiences on VS in all their classes but I believe they lack the overall levels of quality and professionalism that BA have. The gimmicks and slogans really don't appeal to me either. I much prefer BA's understated class and business-like atmosphere over multi-coloured seats, rap music, sexual innuendo and other nonsense!

Agreed. Chav-central on VS I think (no offence Judd  Wink )

I wouldn't normally chose either, but if pushed, would go for BA - no question.

Neither is strong on personal comfort for me, but I have done 5 or 6 VS flights and am still waiting to be impressed. Seems like a lot of hot air.

BA promise a good, solid product and consistently deliver. Not bad at all.

BA anytime for me. I have flown with both BA and VS and there is no comparison. I flew BA to Caracas with a 5 week old baby, the BA FAs were superb with her and looked after her for practically the whole flight including feeding and changing. In fact I had a job getting her back off them when we landed!
On the other hand , I flew with Virgin to Miami from Gatwick on an old beaten up 747 that had definitely seen better days, and being a man of genuine proportions I found the seats too narrow and my hips were sore to the point of bruising on landing. I found the FAs almost indifferent to the need of the PAX and felt they were an inconvenience on "their" flight. I was not impressed with the service and aircraft on that flight.

However, I would not want to slag Virgin off too much because recently they have moved into the big league with better aircraft and more facilities and comforts for PAX. I only hope that the FAs attitude has improved somewhat from my experiences.
On the whole we have 2 world class airlines here in the UK but for me BA have the edge.

I think VS has an edge over BA. They have a more relaxed atmosphere and it appeals to more people. BA has more of an appeal to the businessmen or the uptight people that prefer very professional airlines over airlines that are not as up-tight as the others.

Yea but they are not working then. You can't judge them on what they do out of work. Their can be BA F/A's that talk like that out of work, that doesn't mean that the FA's are unprofessional and such.

I have flown both on Economy. VS wins by a mile and more.

VS: Full entertainment system with really classy service.

BA: Not even newspapers, apparently the people of economy class should not be allowed to read (or perhaps are illiterates).

I would never fly BA if I have a choice.

My 2 cents.

Best,

The manner in which you behave in uniform does affect how people view the airline. This is one of the reasons why BA has very strict standards for how we look and behave while in uniform. Once it's on, you are representing the company.

You seem to suggests that regular travellers don't want professional service and this is far from the case. Everyone, business persons or simple holiday travellers all require and deserve the same level of professionalism from which ever carrier they fly with.

Admittedly I am biased given the carrier I work for, but having flown both BA and VS in recent months, BA does have a higher level of service and concern for passenger needs. Having to search for a FA on VS and then being made to wait for almost an hour just to get water or juice after waking up on an overnight flight, does not give a good impression. Added to that, overhearing comments from other passengers on arrival at LGW, VS did not leave a good impression on many during that flight.

BA, for the network, the lounges, on board services, and ffp's.

I still have images of VS being a charter company.

I flew BA on a codeshare flt with QF in 2001 and hated it.

Old plane, crew did not seem to care and disapeared for most of the flt to SIN

That has all changed now and i would pick BA over VS any day. I love making passengers happy when they call asking for flt info and seating. As we always get told, BA Customer support is sometimes the first time a passenger has spoken to BA themselves and a first impresion counts. I feel good when i haev sent someone away smiling as i know they will have a good flt.

I am of course biased, but having flown a international and domestic only once with them, i have seen how much they have improved, and are wanting to improve more, for the sake of passengers and making there trip a good one.

I read a website last year with over 500 complaints against VS and after that, do not really think i would fly them to the states (maybe only to get on a 340)

Rubbish! What if my only firsthand of experience of VS is how those staff chose to conduct themselves in that hotel lobby. How am I to know otherwise how they behave? If I knew nothing better based on that experience alone I wouldn't fly with VS...however I do know better and still don't fly with VS  Silly

Those FAs behaved extremely unprofessionally and were foolish to do so in full uniform!

Absolutely! As Speedbird2155 pointed out we have strict uniform standard guidelines at BA. A colleague of mine was recently formally disciplined for having an inappropriate mobile phone conversation in front of customers whilst in uniform - such things are simply not tolerated at BA.

You do get newspapers. I got one on a domestic flt to LHR from MAN??

And anyway. If ur going on a long haul, ur bound to have already got a paper, or even a book to read on the flt. Or like me, just looking forward to getting the PTV's up and running for the films

I have never flown on either airlines. But I worked for a handling company that handled both airlines.

From the observation on the ground....

VS
PROS - great marketing, "apparently" more for you money. Young, hip, fun, bright colorful. Pretty young crew, great IFE.

CONS - Seating config in coach, is too cramped. Smaller airline, less destinations.

BA
PROS - bigger airline, bigger alliance, more destination choice. Comfortable seating in all classes. Pretty good IFE. Soothing colored interior.

CONS - less exciting, older crowd, more traditional, the inflight service may not be as great as VS, but this is sometimes very dependent on the crew that happen to be working the flight that day.

What would I fly? In premium class, VS. In economy class, BA.
There is something special about planes....
