Have You Ever Flown Business/First Class?

Tue Jun 07, 2005 5:45 am

I never flew in First Class but a few times in Business Class. In general I can say that all my flights were very pleasant, especially the long flights to the USA or to Singapore, there is a huge difference beween flying Eco and Biz, you simply feel better after you arrived.

Not only the flight itself is worth to pay more money but also the other amenities such as lounge access, more miles, priority boarding, priority baggage, dedicated check-in counters, etc.

I have flown domestic first on UA and DL thanks to airline goofs. They were shorthaul flights, MCO-IAD and SLC-GTF; but while the larger seats were nice, it didn't really seem worthwhile to pay for it.
I Paid to fly first HNL-SFO-PDX on UA once, and thouroughly enjoyed the experience. On the longer flight it is definitely worth the extra cash. Got good food, plenty of room, and pleasant service.
And finally, just recently I was able to cash in miles for business class UA HNL-NRT-SIN. I had to ride coach on the way home though. The international flight pretty much demands business class! Lots of good food was served, had room to strech out and sleep, amenities kit made for a nice freshening up at the airport, and the noise cancelling headphones united provided tipped the comfort scale! If you top a flight like that off with a stay in a good hotel, why you feel like a king!

To be honest I've lost count of how many times....   All on British Airways, though have done some more shorthaul on Iberia. I've done BA First three times longhaul (LHR-BKK and return, LHR-JFK and return and LHR-LAX and return), and I flew Concorde, LHR-JFK in September 2002. As for business I haven't got a clue but is probably close to 50 roundtrips longhaul These were all part of family vacations and we often flew upfront because my father spend a lot of time in the air with work and it's no fun flying down the back on vacations.

Now I'm 21 and got a girlfriend in the US I tend to end up paying for my own trips and still manage around three or four longhaul J trips a year with a few shorthaul, still on BA. Currently got another two J segments booked (on UA, was a very good deal) and three BA F segments. While some may see it as a frivolity I do enjoy my trips and also writing them so have published a number of my more recent flights on here. Expect to see my afforementioned trips written up on here too.

Twice:

1. Mexicana and Avicanca
2. Business and Business
3. Yes and Yes
4. Very nice, though the AV lfight was a domestic 1hr sector. The MX flight was 4hrs and a half and it was very pelasant.

BA in J all the time, been on the original Club that the 744s were delivered with, the Cradle Seat and the flat bed and Concorde.

VS I've only been in the Upper Class Seat, not the Suite yet.

SR in C class on the MD-11

ME in Cedar Class a few times

UA First once, that was pretty nice on a short flight.

CY Business class...nothing special.

Anyway I have to say the service on ME is really nice, but that might be a bit biased.

Otherwise I can heartily recommend BA and VS, although I still find BA more polished.

Crikey - loads of flights in business class - am lucky enough to be in the industry and get lots of trips - almost always in business class. Most of my flights have been on BA, but I've also flown business on the likes BMI, KLM, Scandinavian, Lufthansa, Sabena, Swissair, Swiss, Alitalia, Iberia, Air France, CSA, Malev, Cyprus Airways, TAP, Austrian, Olympic, THY, Luxair, Air Canada, Emirates, and a couple of others I've probably forgotten.

Preferred flying jumpseat though  Smile

1. MH.
2. First.
3. KUL-SYD 777-200 3 people in First and SYD-KUL 747-400 only one person in First.....me  Wink. Fully recommended  Smile.
4.The best flights ever....even with the old cabin-style back in December 2002.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. NG.
2. Amadeus Class. (Biz/First because the place for the "normal" First is occupied with the fully equipped onboard kitchen.)  Wink
3. VIE-KUL OE-LPC (the newest 777 with the "modern" Cocoon-Seat)...nice Crew, "nice" Plane (everything worked) -->recommended // KUL- VIE OE-LPB (with the little bit old fashioned Cocoon-Seat)....very grumpy crew [maybe because they didnt want to work the New Years Flight  Wink ]....Seat 2B....the electrical Foot-Rest didn't work --> not recommended.
4. Outbound great flight, inbound nothing to remember.

I was upgraded once into Business Class on AOM's good old DC 10-30 on a flight from CDG to Guadeloupe/French West Indies. Was a nice experience as the seats were a lot more comfy and the service was great!

I remember many years ago that non rev on SAA was always business class until the usual happened, some assholes spolied it for everyone.

I flew DL business class FRA-DFW on an L-1011 in 1991, that was great, big leather seats and wonderful service.

SAA plenty times, the best being in November last year FRA-JNB on a 346 with those incredible lie flat seats!

1. US Airways
2. Domestic First
3. Absolutely recommended- especially on the Airbus.
4. I was going to write a trip report about it, but never got pictures, so I never wrote the report. I flew SYR-PHL-MCO and back a couple of weeks ago to visit ERAU, and I'd personally use FF points on longer flights. While nice, it's not worth paying the cash or using the mileage on a 2 hour flight. That said, would I do it again? Yes.

I presume my flights when I was younger was partly with frequent flyer miles, part paid tickets since it is impossible to get four award seats in First (possible on business) on most carriers.

With my trips now I pay for them all myself, although redeem miles for trips in First. £14,000 for two people to sit in comfort for 26hrs is unsurprisingly beyond my means!

Me too, although I have a deal with my parents. If I work during University holidays then they give me an allowance while down at University to spend on what I like; travel, giving to bums, buying CDs etc etc (rent, tuition fees, living expenses are already paid for). If I don't work during the holidays then they don't pay me this sum, so I either get double or nothing. With a little money management it all fits into place nicely...

hehehe I never flew anything but First Class or what later became known as Business First until I left Ansett  Smile

The joys of travelling subload! This also meant you had a dress inspection before every flight from the ticketing peeps, and as you only got to go if there were empty seats...most empty seats were up the front....unless you got stuck right up the front....

I was lucky enough to get Business back from LAX to MEL in 2000 with United, again travelling subload...

Man what a rude shock cattle class was! Imagine actually having to buy your alcoholic beverages?!!  Smile

I've (only Big grin) been able to fly in First about 3 times until today. Two of the three flights were on AeroMexico, the other on United and that by shier coincidence. It all happened as my mom, sister and I we're running late to catch a United flight out of IAD destined to MCO. As we got to the gate, boarding had already been completed. A kind gate agent then upgraded us to first class; the flight turned out to be one of the best ever till now.

As for Business class, it's a different story Big grin. I've been lucky enough to have been able to experience on about 6 flights in business class. All of them were on Swissair (thanks to my dad knowing a employee of that company). On my last ever Swissair flight (MD11 ZRH-MIA), my parents, sister and I were all upgraded to business class due to overbooking in Economy. This flight ranks right up there next to the above mentioned United flight.

Did for the first time last Saturday on 2 Taca flights, Miami to Costa Rica, and Cosa Rica to Managua. We were all travelling as a huge group and they extremely overbooked so me and a few friends were upgraded to first/"business" class (2-class configuration). Very nice service from Taca.  Smile Expect a trip report pretty soon.  Wink  Smile

for me my dad used to work for Pepsi and we would get home leave all the time so they would pay for the ticket.

since then its just been a matter of upgrading with miles or else getting upgraded for some operational reason (BA and VS).

And on MEA just pay for it, or get upgraded (happened a couple of times).

I've never flown economy on an International flight! And most of the airlines I fly here in the U.S. don't have first class (LCC's).

Next flights:
JFK-ZRH Business
ZRH-LHR Business
LHR-JFK Upper
JFK-SLC-YVR First
ANC-SEA-CVG-JFK First except for the AS flight from ANC to SEA
LGA-PHF-LGA I always purchase the $35 upgrade for this flight!

DEC04/JAN05 SK:

A343 NRT-CPH-NRT:
Great flight, older style seats, not sky bed type but quite comfortable. Food, wine and service was fablous! Good IFE, but NOT AVOD.

MD87 CPH-MAD-CPH:
Food, wine and service was fablous, pity about the aircraft. Was identical seat pitch as economy, with tray table in middle seat on that side. Not particularly impressed.

Paid for by me! Was a very good deal ex Oz, QF economy SYD-NRT-SYD, SK business NRT-CPH-MAD-CPH-NRT. About $A3600 aganist $A2200, best AVAILABLE Y class.

RE: Have You Ever Flown Business/First Class?

Wed Jun 15, 2005 9:00 am

I have flown first and business class on a number of times. I fly about a half and half mixture of economy and first class when I fly domestic but recently I have not been willing to pay the upgrade fee as much, so I usually fly economy. I don't keep records of this, but I have probably between 50 and 100 legs in first class domestically. I have flown UA, AS, AA and CO up front on domestic flights. I won't go into detail, but here are some trip reports about domestic first class.
UA First Class IND-ORD-LAX On EMB170/767 Pics (by RoseFlyer Nov 28 2004 in Trip Reports) LAX-ORD On UA Business Class 3-class 763 (by RoseFlyer Oct 5 2004 in Trip Reports) AA First Class To Mexico And Back SEA-CUN (long) (by RoseFlyer Jan 1 2005 in Trip Reports)

Here are my different experiences in the premium cabins on international flights when it makes the real difference:

United Airlines
Business Class
AKL-LAX in 1994
Recommended
On a 747 with the really old style business class seats. I had a wonderful gigantic steak.

United Airlines
Business Class
ORD-LHR-ORD in 1997
Mild Recommendation
Good service on a 777, but the seat was broken on both legs and only one flight had PTVs.

Asiana
Business Class
SEA-Seoul-DEL-Seoul-SEA in 1999
Not recommended
Not very good seats at all with no PTV and limited pitch. I didn't really like the food much either.

United Airlines
Business Class
LAX-AKL-LAX in 2001
Mild Recommendation
Upper deck of a 747 with lots of space and excellent service.

Air New Zealand
Business Class
LAX-PPT-LAX in 2002
Mild Recommendation
Service was really good from kind flight attendants, but the business class seats on the 767 aren't all that great.

United Airlines
First Class
SEA-NRT-SIN in 2003
Recommended
Good professional service from a senior staff up front. Really comfortable flat seat with the only bad thing being an overly small PTV.

Lufthansa
First Class
DEL-FRA-PDX in 2003
Recommended
Good service from friendly crew. The first class seat is good and flat, but not the most private and not all that special.

Air New Zealand
First Class
LAX-AKL-LAX in 2003
Not Recommended
Horrible seating, but wonderful food and an attentive crew. These old first class seats were not even fully flat.

United Airlines
First Class
SEA-NRT-SIN/BKK-NRT-SEA in 2004
Recommended
Again good and professional service from a more senior crew. Seating is great, but PTV is bad.

UA SEA-NRT-SIN F Class (by RoseFlyer Aug 11 2004 in Trip Reports)
BLR-BKK-NRT On TG/UA F-Class (by RoseFlyer Aug 15 2004 in Trip Reports)

Thai Airways
Business Class
BLR-BKK in 2004
Not Recommended
Horrible seats with almost no recline, no leg rest and no PTV. The attentive and superior service and clean cabin hardly made up for the lack of comfort. However this was a rather short flight on an A300, so long haul flights might be better.

Lufthansa
Business Class
ORD-FRA in 2005
Recommended
Wonderful flat seat in the new LH business class. Slept well even with the recline. Service was also good and friendly.

United Airlines
Business Class
FRA-IAD in 2005
Mildly recommended
Good service on the top deck with comfortable seats. UA is good, but not worth going out of your way to take. Don't be afraid to take UA International if they are the most cost effective, or have the most ideal itinerary.

Nope Garri. I haven't.  Sad My dad did get delayed in a MIA-DFW flight, and got bumped to 1st class on the next one...which happenned to be a brand spankin' new AA 777! He said he didn't want it to land! The same thing happenned on KLM, so he got to ride AMS-BOM(Might be New Delhi) 1st class in the nose of a 744. A few other things like this have also happenned to him. Oh well. I'll get there some day.

hi guys,

already a lot of posts, but I will put mine it, too!

When I travel long haul, I only fly Business Class! I am pretty tall and I dont feel very comfortable in Y class  bomb

I flew only on Lufthansas Business Class, because I work for them and get cheap tickets  Big grin

Trips I did in C Class:

PHX-FRA (A340-300, scary take off)
FRA-SFO-FRA (B744, POWERFUL)
FRA-DEN-FRA (A346, well, OK, but still not as good as 744)
FRA-IAD-FRA (A333 and back A343)

I've flown Business Class a couple of dozen times on NW, KL and CO in the last two years.

One trip in Biz with AF. The 'old style' seats which I hated (although the food was decent), and I *hate* the hardwired headphones (I have my own!)

Several trips in J on Malaysia Airlines, including my only international F trip, SYD-KUL-FRA. F was most excellent! One must appreciate lobster for dinner.  Smile

I've also done a couple of J trips on EI transatlantic. Back in 2002, the superb service made up for the lousy seats. In 2004, the average service made the lousy seats....well....lousy.

Hi...

In 1998 my wife (now Ex..) and I were planned to fly NW from BOS to AMS...
The flight was overbooked and we were asked if we would be willing to from PHL instead...
After some negotiations we agreed, but they would have to upgrade us to business, instead of the normal flight coupon they offered us.

So...a hop in one of NW's Saab 340 took us to PHL....

The service on the DC10 was great...the seats were old...but nice!!!
Plus...we were the only ones in shots flying in business on that flight....  Wink  Wink

In AMS they even delivered our luggage to us....ne need for us to wait at the baggae claim.....  Wink  Wink

I really enjoyed myself...
