UK To Oz - Suggestions?

Thu Jun 16, 2005 2:38 pm

I am planning to visit Australia next year but as, in the past, the majority of my long hauls have been on Boeing family aircraft, I'd like to try the whole trip by Airbus. One option is EK on the A345 but even that looks like it's sometimes a B773.

I'd like to do a stopover in either the US or Far East depending on which way I go) and happy to mix my airlines so does anyone have any suggestions for getting there on a selection of A330, A340 families (had hoped I might go A380 but looks like that'll have to be a 2007 trip!).

Also, when I'm there, going to do plenty of internal travel; anyone know what longer routes the QF B717's operate?

Thanks folks,

CXsjr

Go with EK if you fancy your chances of getting an Airbus because you definitly won't with QF/BA, MH, TG or SQ.

As for the QF 717's - they haven't got them back from JQ yet but once they do expect them to be operating somethere on the Sunshine coast!

You have a pretty good chance on Emirates to get an all Airbus flight. If you choose a non-stop service from DXB to Australia it WILL be a A340 (either 343 for PER or 345 for SYD and MEL).

I'm pretty sure the A330 operates fairly frequently out of the UK to DXB. But some Pom's may be able to clear that one up.

Another option is on CX. They operate the 343 from LHR to HKG and the 330/340 on to Australia.

So you've got plenty of choice. Well almost.

Or try AC. They have Airbus on the route.

Agree with previous comments.

EK and CX are the two main Airbus operators.

I would suggest would fly on the non-stop DXB-SYD/MEL service so u get the new A345.

As for the B717...

There are still a couple in the Jetstar fleet, and they will be transferred to QantasLink to operate to Hamilton Island, Kalgoorlie etc, and will replace some existing Dash 8 services.

You might have to travel from BHX or MAN to DXB to get the A330. From Oct 05 GLA, LHR and I'm sure LGW will be the 773.

I would fly LHR-DAC-BKK-SIN on BG and their 310 and DC10 machines, then fly SIN-Australia with another airline. You could then have a stopover in SIN. It would end up costing between 600 and 700 GBP. OK, so it would be longer and more tiring, but hey - certainly more interesting than, say, QF/BA and LHR-SIN/BKK-SIN. So, you could fly:

LHR-DAC-BKK-SIN-SYD, then SYD-SIN-BKK-DAC-DXB-LHR.

If you'd prefer A330/340 machines, then you could fly LHR-MLE*-CMB-KUL-SIN-SYD on UL 340/330 machines and then GF 340. This should cost a similar price as my BG option. * Only stops in MLE enroute to CMB on certain days.

Once the B717s are transferred to Qantas Link (their regional subsidiary - regional being within Australia), there will be some very long routes flown by them (Qantas Link) in WA (Western Australia) that are currently operated by BAe 146s.

The Perth to Kununurra route is really long - even by Australian standards. The problem is the tourist appeal of Kununurra is not immediatley obvious - but West Aussies might know more about what to do there.

Even if this route is too long for a B717, there are a number of other long-haul routes in WA coming up for the B717 - which may be longer than the B717 routes on the East Coast.

Right now, the only B717 routes are with Jetstar & the longest is probably Hobart to Brisbane non-stop. But they could use an A320 on this sector instead (A320s & B717s are the only planes they have & next year, all the B717s will have been removed from their fleet - some to QF & some elsewhere).

Note that all the B717s going to Qantas are going to Qantas Link (their regional subsidiary), none to Qantas (proper).

I think your final choice of carries will depend on price over which airline's aircraft you want to go on.

CX only operates 1 flight out of 3 from LHR on a 343. Flights to SYD/MEL will be on either A333 or A343.

There's always VS - with their daily A346...

EK does fly some routes from UK to DXB on airbus aircraft. And from DXB-SYD/MEL on the nonstop, it will use the A345.

EK008 LHR DXB A332 Departs 0830 daily arrives DXB 1825.
EK010 LGW DXB A332 Departs 2115 daily arrives DXB 0710+1

EK406 DXB MEL A345 Departs 1010 daily arrives MEL 0530+1

EK412 DXB SYD A345 Departs 1015 daily arrives SYD 0605+1

EK420 DXB PER A343 Departs 0235 daily arrives PER 1725

Coming back you should consider the new 77W from SYD via BKK. I flew it a couple of weeks ago and is a very comfortable a/c.
EK419 SYD BKK B77W Departs 1845 (except saturday) arrives BKK 0100+1
From BKK you can pick up either B773, B77W or TG codeshare A332.
Should be a good mix for you... enjoy the trip down under

Thanks for your suggestions so far guys.

I have flown the AF 77W and it too was quite a pleasant trip; I am thinking at the moment about the 'via DXB' option with EK to try out the A345. But, do AC use, or intend to use their A345's down under or do CX use their A346?

So many options .... perhaps I'll have to go twice! And desperate to get a trip on the QF (link) 717's.

I'm don't really follow the 'who flies what where' side of the aviation scene but I know that Qantas has it's new A333s on the Brisbane-Singapore and Brisbane-HongKong routes. I think (pretty sure) there's still some 743s on the route to but the Qantas site makes finding out which craft is flying the route pretty simple and I guess you'd just have to be really unlucky (I wouldn't mind though, specially if it's Nalaji dreaming) if one of the 743s pulled up to the gate.

Going into Brisbane would put you in a really good position to catch one of the 717s, If they're in service with QFlink by the time you come, because from Brisbane sunshine coast is only about an hours drive away (correct me if I'm wrong, It's been three years since I moved). I also want to fly the 717s, They've had a pretty eventful life so far. At Avalon, I really enjoyed the fighter jets but they've got nothing on commercial airliners so the thing I liked most was how when there was a scheduled Jet* flight coming in everything would stop and we'd all just wait for it to appear out on the horizon...

Anyway, Wish you luck with your planning,

OzGuy

Why not just fly Gulf Air all the way from UK-->SYD via Bahrain and Singapore? It should be a A343, it was an ex-SQ bird last time I flew (still had Raffles Class insignia).

How about VS via HKG?

If you want variety, go for CX - you can take the A343 from LHR, then A330 to Aus; sometimes they get 346s on the SYD route.

However, as a further solution, if you want a real enthusiasts' experience, try JAL. OK, it's an Airbus free zone, but if you're into photography, Japanese airports are superb ... out via NRT (with JAL 777), back via KIX. JAL's a superb airline as well. It's certainly what I'd chose.

As a last suggestion, how about EVA Air? Currently 744s from LHR (but 332s from TPE to SYD), BUT 773ERs coming onstream from October.

AC add supp A343 services to SYD from YVR from Nov to March.
The rest of the year they operate a dailt B763 YVR-HNL-SYD vv.
Plans are to operate SYD-YVR non-stop with an A345, but no date has been set for this.

CX no longer operate the A346 to Australia, although they did fly it occasionally a year ago.

all services now are A333 and the occasional A343.

To be really adventurous you could go via Chile and stop off at Easter Island and Tahiti. A friend of mine went around the world almost three years ago (flying oneworld carriers) for AUD $200.00 more than the cost of SYD-LHR return and had a couple of days at both places. Or Santiago-Sydney direct with LAN Chile is an A340 service, as is Aerolineas Argentinas from Buenos Aires. These might involve some compromises on your Airbus-only policy however; you could probably take an Iberia A320 to Madrid, but I don't know what is used for services from there to South America.
Monty Python's Flying Circus has nothing to do with aviation, except perhaps for Management personnel.

At the end of the day EK is your best bet as you can fly into Melbourne, Perth, Sydney or Brisbane and out of Melbourne, Perth, Sydney or Brisbane. As for flying on a A340 a lot of Dubai/Australia legs have non-stop A345s on them so take a look at their website. It's pretty clear. The rest of the options, VS, AC etc only give you the option of in and out of Sydney.

As for the 717, it depends on timing. They are being transferred to Qantas Link, in addition to the Western Australia and Queensland operations there will be some 717 flights into and out of Canberra. When it gets closer to your trip let us know and between us all I'm sure we can tell you what sectors the 717 is operating on. It is a great aircraft to fly on.

Try looking in the Polls and Preferences forum. This topic has come up a number or times there and doesn't belong in Civil Aviation.

Have a nice trip.

Its amazing that I see so much information on this site that isnt true..... where do people get their information from ?

The B717-200 WILL NOT be flying to Sunshine Coast, or Canberra , Or Hamilton Island, of Hervey Bay under any circumstances !

The B717 will fly with QF link ex PER to Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Cairns via the red centre, all of intra WA etc. no 717 will be on the east coast its not in National Jet's business plan ... at all

Glad to have cleared that up !

Oh for my money take EK on the A345 or the 777-300ER . I flew them last week SYDDXBSYD and they were sensational ! yes thats right sensational !

Cheers

2 - TG LHR-BKK-SYD/PER/MEL/BNE
3 - MH LHR-KUL-SYD/PER/MEL/BNE

Hi,

Yet another option is Gulf Air, flying

LHR - BAH on either an A332 or an A334 then
BAH - SYD on an A343.

returning the same way.
