Your First Commercial Flight

Sat Jul 09, 2005 6:03 am

What was your first commercial flight ever and what do you remember about it?

Even though this topic has been discussed before, it has already been archived so I thought I'd like to hear it again especially sicne there are probably a lot of new members since it was archved.

Mine was EWR BOS.

it was in 1984 on People Express. 727. Do not remember the variation of the 727. I took it non-rev when I was doing customer service for them. I never flew before so I was very nervous, but I loved after it was all over. I love the feeling of being pushed back in your seat while taking off and liked it to the same thing as climbin up a long hill on a roller coaster.

Aviogenex 737-200 from Manchester (Uk) to Pula (Croatia) in 1985ish.
I remember the airport at Pula being an old shack and snakes slivering across the apron (strange thing to remember I know)

June 1984 BOS-ORD-HNL UA DC10/747
I was ten years old and I remember hanging around in the aft galley annoying a F/A named Carol (One of only a handful of F/As I ever remember the name of). I though the stairs which lead down to the ramp at ORD were strange since BOS had nothing like them.

1979. Pan Am B707 JFK-IAH. I was 3 years old at the time. That flight got me forever hooked on aviation. And yes I actually remember it. However I was too young to pay any attention to names or registration so I will never know which 707 I was on.

93/94/95-ish, uncertain of the date-- TWA MD-80 DSM - STL, final destination unknown- most likely MCI (at the time it was KCI).

Oh how I miss the days of TWA.. such wonderful service.  Sad

In December of 1987; LHR-MLA with Air Malta. I was 10 months old, so all I know is that it could have been a B737-200, B707 or B727-200.

It was in 1976, KIN-YYZ-YUL on an Air Canada DC8 to YYZ and either a 747 or L1011 to YUL. I was eight years old. The oly things i remember were: being in seat 6F from KIN, doing a lot of walking in YYZ to catch the next plane, and being so disoriented by the size of the plane, the time of night and my centre row seat that I did not realize the plane had taken off.

My first flight was in July 1991 with Lufthansa, back in the days where a direct link still existed between LHR and BRE. The aircraft was a B737-500, D-ABID. LH gave me a "Lufthansa Junior" logbook which the captain filled in for me (that's how I know the reg). I still have it somewhere, not quite sure where at the moment though.

My first commercial flight was on a Grumman G-21 Goose from JNU to SGY when I was way young. . . been fascinated with flying ever since. The carrier was Alaska Coastal Ellis Airlines. A combination of three carriers that started their flying days in the Southeast Alaskan panhandle where virtually every city, town and village was accessible only via water.

Alaska Airlines took them over in the late 1960s, added some PBY Catalinas to the fleet. By then however, runways on dry ground were being built or upgraded and the seaplane faded fast.

By 1969 virtually all were gone from the JNU-HNS-SGY run - replaced by DHC-6 Twin Otters . . .

History lesson over.  wink

More than likely, it was YYZ-YYB to visit my mom's family. I was too young (maybe a month or two old at the time), most likely an AC DC-9 of one variant or another.

Nice to see that your first flight was on Transbrasil too! My favorite airline of all time!
My first flight was aboard a Transbrasil 767-200 (PT-TAA, TAB or TAC) in the GRU-MCO flight in December 1990. Was a very happy flight, because I was going to spend my 5th. birthday at Disney World - what kid wouldn't be happy with this!?

I remember it well...because I majorly screwed up!

In 1983, my company flew me from MSP to PWM to fix an alternator problem on an ambulance. I was excited because it was my first flight on a commercial airliner and I was getting paid to do it! My dad was a stateside B-29 pilot during the Korean War and flew Cessnas and Pipers afterward. I'd flown dozens of times in C170's, C150's, C172's, PA20's, and PA28's...whatever airplane he could scrounge from friends.

I had five toolboxes and a suitcase to check. I drove myself to MSP for my 06:10 flight and "parked" in the drop-off lane just outside from the Delta counter. I had my hazard flashers on and an MSP Airport Police officer helped me load all the toolboxes and suitcase onto a trolley. I told him I was going to check-in and return to park my car in the long-term ramp.

It was to be a one-stop flight. MSP-BOS, then BOS-PWM. On finals into BOS, I realized that I'd forgotten to park my car at MSP! I turned to the guy sitting next to me on the 727 and called out, "Oh no!" I told him what happened and he laughed his ass off. He said he was going to PWM, too, and that we had about 15 minutes before the flight continued onto PWM.

I got off the plane and called home from a payphone. I told my mom to call MSP police and explain what happened. I told her I'd call her from PWM to see what she found out. She said they'd towed the car to their impound lot.

I returned to MSP (at 2355) four days later. After paying the parking fine and storage fees, an MSP police officer got ahold of a towing company to give me a ride to my car. I had to pay the towing guy for the ride, to reconnect the transmission linkage, and to jumpstart my car. Those four days of wages were gone.

I never told my boss about that part of the trip.

Mark

Mine was RIC-IAD in 1987. I think it was a BAe Jetstream 31. It was small enough that you could basically touch the pilot from where I was. My mother told me I threw a toy at the pilot apparently haha.

Mine was GEG-PDX on WN not sure the exact plane make other than it was a 737. It was the last day of school and we got out early so we could catch the flight. With both my parrents having previous jobs at the airport it was very exciting hearing what all people do at the airport, It brought back memories of me running threw the hallways upstairs when I was little at the airport while mom worked.

1993 SVO-IAD on one of aeroflot's a310s- I think. I was so young I dont quite remember. Interesting thing was I remember looking at an aircraft nearby the terminal, looked kind of an an-2 ( or something). Whatever it was, the fuselage looked similar to a ford trimotor. the rest I dont remember.

SAP-IAH Continetal B-737-3TO
IAH-EWR Continental DC-10

I still remember the excitement of the my first flight... I was 12. At the time, SAP was only using airstairs and the airport still had an observation deck, so at the top of the stairs I waved goodbye, a la Richard Nixon, to my relatives. This first flight was also sort of bittersweet for me, because we were moving the US. I also remember the feeling of being pushed back on my seat at takeoff... no better feeling in the world at the time! Landing at IAH was for me, amazing... I've never seen so many airplanes gathered in one place before. Didn't even know that there were airplanes bigger than a 737! To this day, airports in Honduras only handle single aisle aircraft. And to my surprise, my second flight out of IAH to EWR was on a DC-10.

Cheers,
BJC

United RIC-ORD-DEN in the late '70s

Actually, Byrd-O'Hare-Stapleton

This was before the current DIA and before the 2-story terminal in RIC. I remember about 15 gate podiums crammed into the area of a single ground-level gate during construction in the early '80s.

Sep 1966 - Lake Central Airlines DC-3, Wheeling WV to DCA with an enroute stop in Morgantown WV. I was going round trip to Norfolk VA, and the trip also included a National Airlines Electra and a United Airlines Viscount, plus a second DC-3 flight on the return leg to Wheeling.

How many folks here on a.net can say that their first flight ever was on a DC-3???

The first one that I can remember was around 1991, GIG-BSB, with a Varig 767 (just knew it was a 767 years later). I still remember the yellow/green/orange seats.
I was 7 or 8 years old then, and after this trip I started loving airplanes. I made one or two trips before but don´t remember anything.
