Upgrade, US Airways LGW - LGA Via PHL/CLT

Wed Jul 13, 2005 10:31 am

Hi,

Hopefully somebody out there can help me, I have some US Airways space available upgrades that I need to use before the end of the year, so being the romantic that I am; I'm taking the better half pre-Christmas shopping in New York. There are several routings we could take, but, does anybody know the average loadings for the routes mentioned below, ie which one will give me the best chance of space available upgrade.

LGW - PHL - LGA
LGW - CLT - LGA
LGW - CLT - RIC - LGA
LGW - CLT - PIT - LGA

The upgrades are for all flights with US; including internal, the difference in price is not a great deal and the difference in flight time is only approx 2hrs, so not a problem.

Returning is another problem, US advertise a couple of routings that seem strange:

LGA - SYR - PHL - LGW
LGA - BWI - PHL - LGW

I would love to fly the above, because they involve either a Saab 340 or a Dash 8; could we get upgrades on these?.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

There's no f/c on either the Saab or the Dash 8. Loads being equal (which may be a poor assumption), I'd fly through CLT as PHL can be a hassle both in terms of navigating the airport and in terms of delays-- especially in December.

Hi

Should of made it clear, am planning to fly early Nov.

Was really after the loads in and out of PHL and CLT to LGW as this makes the greatest percentage of the flight.

Thanks anyway Cubsrule.

I'd agree with cubsrule. Best routing would be LGW - CLT - LGA. I've read of some horror stories of major delays with US Airways at PHL...mainly due to understaffed ground crew, or a careless ground crew. Whether this has changed, i'm not sure...though I doubt it. Perhaps by Christmas it will. Going through RIC is pointless since it'll be an express carrier - no upgrades, same with PIT (most likely), plus its out of your way.

On the return, those are pretty awkward routings. It really depends on what US Airways offers on those routes in terms of aircraft.

Heres the thing. LGA-SYR will definitely be express, and LGA-BWI will definitely be express. No upgrades on either of those sectors. Though, BWI-PHL and SYR-PHL offer Mainline Service (737-400 for example), and the chance of an upgrade is possible. Both BWI-PHL and SYR-PHL also have express carriers operating too...and if you're stuck on an express flight (Dash-8, ERJ-145, etc.), forget about the upgrades.

So it depends on what US Airways is offering. For SYR-PHL, and BWI-PHL, if both routes are showing 737's or mainline, then i'd probably choose the SYR-PHL routing and, hopefully with an upgrade, enjoy nice service for a longer time. If one route is showing 737's, and the other is Express, then choose the 737 route. If neither route is showing 737's, and its all express...Go through BWI, since its a shorter distance and a lot closer to PHL.

Sorry, I missed the one load comment I was going to make. AFAIK, US does better out of LGW to PHL- I'd think you'd have a better shot at an upgrade on the transatlantic leg at least going through CLT.

US also flies 757's on the BWI-PHL routes, just in case you like 757's like I do  Smile
PHL is a really cool airport, but it can be VERY crazy sometimes. CLT is very nice and delays are usually at a minimum. In this case, I'd say go via CLT.

Have a good trip on US  Smile
