Your Young Theory's

Sun Jul 17, 2005 4:11 am

Hey all!

When I was about 5 years old, I used to think contrails were made out of the aircrafts tail slicing through the sky, and all the cloud coming out of the "rip" in the tail made  ashamed   Silly

I also used to think that most aircraft took-off into the wind so that they could get more air blown into the engines! blush

Stupid theory's for little kids

When I was 10 I thought that if you jumped inside a plane the plane moved along and I hit the wall Big grin

I also thought that contrails where only made by fighter jets LOL

The classic one, that a B747 would take 7 miles to take off.
On a non-aviation topic; I used to think that Manchester was a building in my home city, of Plymouth! rotfl

That's the A340 isn't it?

Sorry, just getting that one in before someone else does  cheeky

I used to think that AC stobe lights high in the sky were satellites orbiting the earth. I was around 6 or 7.

You sure were farther along than I was. Not too long ago, I thought that airplanes landed on the most convenient runway available, regardless of wind direction. I had no clue that wind had anything to do with it. If the plane was coming to the airport, it would just land on the runway that was closest to it. Boy was I wrong......

I did not understand the concept of thrust. I thought the propeller blew air over the wings, creating lift, and therefore the airplane flew. I wasn't quite inquisitive enough to try to figure out jets, let alone those with tail mounted engines!

I remember at the age of five or so being told by my father that he flew an Airbus on a business trip. This confused me as the only Airbus I knew were those red double-deckers that drove around Heathrow with 'Airbus' on the front and sides!

When I went to London I had a good laugh when I first saw one of those...the numerous ironies are pretty self-evident...

I used to think that flaps were just big ailerons deflecting the wings upwards. It used to confuse the hell outta me because it made me wonder why, if that was the case, did the plane have to rotate on takeoff.

Speaking of control surfaces, I used to think the ailerons and the elevators worked identically, with the ailerons flying the front of the plane and the elevators flying the back. Once I learned otherwise it was some until I realized the elevator pushed the tail up or down to lower or raise the nose instead of twisting the whole airplane up or down.

this is the next one i just rememberd when i was 7 i was watching airline with my mum and it had a BA 744 on take off roll and when it went over the camera it confused me as to why (what i thought were airlerons ) where pointing down not up and then i found out thos were flaps and that elevators make the plane go up and down not airlerons

LOL I heard the same exact thing from my brother a few years back, that the wheels moved the plane during both taxi AND takeoff. The funny thing about it? He was at least 18 or 19 at the time!

Similar for me too. I used to think that only military jets would be flying at the height of those contrails because airliners flew quite low (where I grew up was right under the flightpath into LHR) - it never occurred to me that they might be made by other airliners not flying in to or out of Heathrow!

I also used to think that there were red and green twinkling stars in the sky, not just white ones (OK, I was VERY young when I thought that  blush  ).

I used to think that aircraft had car horns to get other aircraft out of the way in the air and on the ground.
I also thought that contrails was that the plane was on fire and I always said to my self thats there were a lot of burning planes up there.

Me too !!

I also used to think that contrails were big ropeand that all planes going to that particular destination were all conected together  blush  ( I was 5yrs old though ) and i also thought that the hangers were the planes bed rooms and that they had pillows and dovets . I also thought that planes had to have a wash every morning before they took off.

Happy Flying !!  wave
