I would go with American Airlines  Smile

If you don't know anything about aviation, you would automatically assume that AA is the national carrier of the USA, well that's what I think!  Wink

UA, and I have no question about it, excellent fleet-network, Star-Alliance which is the best alliance. CO would be second, I think their international product could be improved for economy passengers, mostly on the 757-200. SkyTeam is a good alliance but star has it beat almost everywhere.

Star v SkyTeam.

1. Europe for Star
Austrian
BMI
LOT
Lufthansa
SAS
Spanair
TAP
Croatia

1 Europe for SkyTeam
AirFrance/KLM
CSA

This ones a toughy....um STAR!

Asia Star
ANA
Asiana
THAI
Singapore Airlines

Asia SkyTeam

Korean Air
Kind of NWA

Star wins again

North America

Star

Air Canada
UAL
US

SkyTeam

Continental
Delta
Northwest
AeroMexico

However being no Canadian standing, SkyTeam does take this one.

South America

Star
Varig

SkyTeam
-ZILCH-

Obviously Star wins!

Australasia

Star
AirNewZealand

SkyTeam
Sort of Korean Air but not really

So obviously Star wins again.

I seem to have put just a little stress on alliances ( Big grin ), but really if they both have the similar fleet networks, similar international standing, and similar service, I look at who I can connect with and who I am linked to and UAL beats CO.

Who Deserves To Be Ranked No. 1?

Sun Jul 31, 2005 11:07 pm

I think that the best way to look at this is strictly on an objective basis, personal biases aside...

Inflight service: People can argue about the service between different carriers, but to be completely honest, I have read both stellar and negative things about the ground and inflight staff at every legacy, so I really think that that is a moot point. However, CHAOS at UA or the problems NW is having with their mechanics is another story, and that is reason to discredit an airline, at least in my opinion.

Prestige/name: Some claim prestige as a valid reason. Although an airline's name may have a psychological effect for some, it's really not a fair method of comparison. For example, regardless of how hard CO or NW may try, their names simply don't have the same meaning as "American" or "United" does. So that really can't be a deciding factor either - it's not something the airlines can change.

So then what's left? Services and amenities, fleet modernity, destinations covered, the airport experience, etc.

Food service: As we all know, as it currently stands, CO is the only one that has yet to start selling food, and although it may only be a turkey sandwich or a cheeseburger, it still shows that they're attempting to make an effort in that area. Everyone else has moved to BOB or isn't serving anything at all (NW doesn't even do Spinzels anymore).

Fleet: This one goes to CO as well. While they may not have the 744, they win hands down. For starters, their planes are clean - consistently. I have never been on a dirty CO aircraft in my life. Not something that can be said about the rest of the Big Six. Their planes are all well-maintained and modern inside - even their 733s and 735s look identical inside to the new 738s and 739s, just without IFE. Unlike AA with the MD-80s, or NW with DC-9s, the majority of CO's domestic fleet, the 738s, actually has IFE - drop down LCDs, no less, not aisle-mounted CRTs. Separately, their 762s beat the pants off of everyone else's, with PTVs to boot. It's really not much of an area of comparison there. Some may argue that their Transatlantic 752s aren't the best, but then again, when it's a 752 or nothing at all, and no one's competing on the routes with a better plane, you can't really criticize them.

Inflight Comfort: As for seat pitch. Now that AA has reverted to LRTC, 31" is basically the standard. However, major props to UA here for having E+; it's definitely something that all of the airlines should look into adding, so this one goes to UA. One side note, honorable mention goes to CO for the new sliding Y seat that is slowly being added throughout the fleet that is incredibly comfortable.

Airport Experience: I think that for the average Y pax without elite status, this is pretty much equal for all the airlines - its a tie. Everyone has kiosks, and nobody can really do much about lines at checkin. For the elite pax, however, CO wins this award for having eliteAccess with easier boarding for elite members. No one else allows their elites to skip the boarding line.

Airport Lounges: Essentially, all airport lounges are the same - nice places to relax with airline reps to help you out in a jam. So who wins this one? It's a tie between CO, DL, and NW, all of whom offer free alcohol in their lounges.

Destinations Served: There's really no contest in this area, as CO serves more destinations than any other airline in the world. Can't really argue with that one. However, honorable mention to UA for being the only US airline to serve Australia (and CNS on CO doesn't count) and having a strong hub network.

Financial Viability: This category goes to AA and CO, as they're the only two airlines that reported a true Q2 profit and seem to have a relatively secure future.

Overall Winner: While other airlines here and there have tied or won a category, CO seems to be the best airline in the US when compared in a wide variety of objective categories.

So what do you think? Where do you disagree (or agree) with my analyses?

Hi Cory6188 , i have just read your addition to the thread and to be honest i think you have just swung my vote in the direction of Continental. You have put forward a strong argument thats relatively short but get's the points that matter in there too.

Are you serious...this seems grossly unfair for economy passengers who can sometimes q for close to an hour only then to be skipped by some guy in a suit.Don't get me wrong i know elites and busines passangers pay considerably more than those in coach but this seems to be going a little too far in my view.(One who travels ONLY in economy) Thanks for your contribution Cory.  Smile

To be completely honest, at boarding time, no Y pax never waits in line for an hour in order to get on the plane. Even on a 777, they board by rows, so the maximum wait for a regular passenger might be 10 minutes, max. The eliteAccess program really isn't that big of a deal with regards to extending the wait of the regular line.

DL?!?! Are you mad? If I didn't have an allegiance to AA, CO would be #1. They are tearing up Europe routes outta EWR, and are expanding all over the place.

Uhhhh....what? Doesn't pretty much every single airline with a tier FF program invite their elite passengers to board early?

UAL is very good with their fleet, they even have the 744 and A320's. I have never seen an unsatisfactory cabin on UA. On CO I have, and their seats in Y are cardboard cushioned, literally! I actually find it quite uncomfortable.

Continental !

AA would have gotten my vote if it had a larger INTL presence, and coupled with the fact that they got rid of CAI and TLV service (TWA) for no other reason than political.

This is true, however, eliteAccess at CO is unique because elite pax can interrupt the boarding process at any point by walking up on the eliteAccess line. Every CO gate at every station has two lines leading to the door, and the gate agents are instructed to halt general boarding if an eliteAccess pax shows up. On most airlines, they just board early, and if you arrive and you're elite, you have to wait with everyone else.
