What Was Your Best Economy Class Meal?

Sat Aug 06, 2005 3:34 am

The best inflight meal I have had was breakfast on an Air UK F100 in May 1995.(or was it KLMuk by then?). There was a hot dish of omelette, bacon, sausage, tomato, possibly hash brown too. There was also a bowl (plastic carton) of corn flakes cereal and also bread roll with jam and butter. The flight was only 1hr 15 between MAN and AMS but it was better than any long haul meal I've had . Perhaps the departure time of 6.30 am had something to do with it.
So lads and lasses, what's the best inflight meal you've had?

The best economy meal well its got to be caledonian airways in 94 gatwick to corfu it was like canaloni the pasta with minced beef, bread roll with a block of lurpac butter, also a bowl of fruit. It was a tasty meal. In 95 gatwick to mahon we had the same as what you had on a monarch.

It's sad to say that it has been this long since getting good in flight food.
Back in 84, I flew World Airways BWI-OAK. On the return trip, it was a morning flight, I had ham and cheese quiche, biscuit w/honey, fresh fruit, OJ and coffee. Was about the best damn breakfast I ever had!
Lately though, the best in flight meal was the chicken salad sandwich on herb foccacia bread that I bought at the sandwich counter at ORD on the way back to MDT!  rotfl

When I flew longhaul with Air China last summer the food was very nice, we had two meals onboard each way between London and Beijing, beef, chicken and fish - all very nice. My biggest surprise was that they served Coffee Mate with the hot drinks, the only airline I have flown which does.

Short haul, KLM is good as is BA's all day Delhi, but I prefer Lufthansa's product on the whole. On my last flight with them from MUC-LHR the flight was half empty so they came round with seconds for those who wanted it, including the offer of more beer.

Air Caledonie International SYD-NOU, June 96. Full 3 course meal on one very overloaded tray, with seafood salad, some kind of very yummy beef casserole, a fruit tart and cheese platter, all with a nice Aussie Semillion Chardonnay - excellent.

In 1996, I flew DEN-IND on UA in a 737. The meal was a hamburger (made from soy, I think) with chips and candy on the side. Being 10 years old at the time, I liked it. All the other meals I've had in Y were mainly unmemorable, non-existant or disgusting.

Once though in 2001, I flew BMI from LHR-CDG in the 737 business class and there was actually a meal served, though I opted not to eat as I was not hungry at all. It consisted of an typical english breakfast with eggs and sausage, and I remember my parents saying that it was very good.

2003 on SAS from CPH to MXP. Great salad of cured salmon with some herring and nice boiled new potatoes with dill and a beer. This followed up a nice flight from SEA with good catering, lots of free beverage service and great staff, and a visit to the mid-terminal restaurant/ber in CPH for some oysters, smoked salmon and a glass of champagne. By far the most civilized trip I'ver ever had in coach.

In April 2001 onboard a SQ 744 from FRA to JFK. Shrimps with some delicious rice and vegetables. Don´t remember the exact composition but it was much better than anything else I ever had in Y-Class.

Haagen Das ice-cream served after an average meal on a CX flight.  Smile CX seems to specialise in stir-fry noodles drenched in oil and with nothing much else in it . . .

I remember in the mid-80s, as a youngster, flying on JL with Japanese noodles, that was interesting. Other than that, hats off to QF for those salads served on domestic routes, probably best meal on short-haul flights I've had for a while.

I did rather like a QF breakfast served from CHC to AKL one morning, the omelette was OK, but it was the first and only time I was served a whole banana on a flight!!!

Kids meal on BA LHR-LAX a few years back : chicken nuggets, chips , beans and then an ice cream for dessert.  yummy

Best economy meal was onboard Air Austral (UU), flying RUN to HAH, in April 02.
Really nice salmon and vegetables, and dessert too. I was actually not looking forward to this segment after having flown MAN-CDG-RUN in J.
I really recomment UU.

MUC-DTW on NW returning home after Christmas in Munich in 2003. Roast beef, rice, green beans, fresh salad, roll, chocolate cake w/fruit in the middle. The FA gave us extra wine. Was actually attractive on the tray AND tasty!

Back in 85 I flew from Melbourne to Adelaide on Ansett and I was very surprised about the wonderful hot breakfast they had served back then. Especially considering the short distance/flying time.

On my way back to Melbourne I flew on Trans Australia and not only were their cutlery plastic, the food tasted plastic as well.

These days airlines safe so much on extras and it shows. I usually find the portions far too small and less tasty. But then again, I sit in a plane and not in a restaurant. Its all food that has been prepared hours before, so what do you expect?

For good food I go visit my mom!

So long

Have you flown the new A330-200s?? The service hasn't changed too much from what you describe & the aircraft has one of the nicest interiors that come through AKL. It's top notch.

Definately, AS PHX-SEA 1989

Braised beef tips w/wild rice. I believe it came with chocolate cake too.

Second best, AS SEA-PHX 1989

The best airline scrambled eggs!

 yummy

DL and AA always seemed to offer salisbury steak which reminded me too much of a hungry man dinner.

The best one I can remember was NW FRA-DTW returning from a Christmas in Germany back in Dec '03. In economy, we had some kind of beef in gravy (stew?), green beans & rice, with a large hot roll, a very fresh, colorful salad, and a piece of chocolate cake with fruit in the middle for dessert. Then, before landing, we had hot pizza with Belgian ice cream for a snack. It was very nice!
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

US Airways used to offer a filet mignon with green peppercorn sauce in First Class that was actually quite tasty. I had some great lamb chops in their Envoy Class to Europe as well.

Olympi Airways 747-200 ATH-JFK in 1987. Best darn airplane food I'd ever have.

Worst had to be Alitalia FCO-EWR. I know they try and serve pasta but it was nasty!

A couple come to mind:

1. Veal on a Swissair MD-80, ZRH-LCA, circa 1993. I still remember it!
2. MEA's desserts are quite good...kinafe b jibneh I had on GVA-BEY in June 2003 (A321, F-ORME) was a delight.

Best meal I had in Y class was on Saudia LHR-JED in 1994. The pickled fish starter was not that spectacular, but the yoghurt curry chicken with rice and the apple pie wrapped in phyllo for dessert more than made up for it!

I remember on KL we had:
Keep in mind this was July 1997 so my memory might fail

EZE-AMS:
Pasta - Some sort of Agnolottis (4, a lot for an Economy meal) stuffed with Ham and cheese (riocotta). Followed by Strawberry flavored Jello.

AMS-GIG:
Chicken parmessana! Can't forget that one! Dessert was some kind of Chocolate Fudge.

GIG-EZE:
Quick Meal - some kind of crepes with... uh... I don't remember what they had, lol.

Now, AR: December 2000
EZE-MIA:
I had a chicken with a stuffed "tortilla" - kind of like a Revuelto Gramajo, only not revuelto.

QF: July 2001:
Pasta again - spaghettis with tomato sauce with some kind of whipped cream vanilla flavored (something like Natilla, our spanish friends will understand)

I do remember that on SYD-AKL-EZE I tasted some excellent Toowoomba Wines, even though I was underage (hehe, my P.E. professor would get them for me)

That's all I can remember!

The following are my two contenders:

November 1990, Air India, JFK-LHR (747-237): Chicken (murg) with sag paneer, a curried creamed spinach with cheese cubes. Very tasty, and the plane smelled of Indian spices for hours afterward (which provided a fun aromatic atmosphere for the Bollywood movie being shown). This was by far my most memorable way to fly across the Pond.

July 1983, Air Florida, JFK-LGW (DC-10-30CF): Steak and veggies, and an entire mini-bottle of a red Bordeaux wine (enough to fill my cup three times, at least. In the morning, the flight attendants provided free orange juice and hot towels, something I hadn't experienced since flying Swissair first class in the late 1960s! And this was on a $450 (RT!) charter! I really miss Air Florida.

My best dinner was on AS from SEA-ORD. It was BBQ Chicken with a good amount of BBQ (gotta love the BBQ) over rice with corn & black beans mixed in to the rice. A small salad with choice of dressing (Italian) and also a drink. The portion wasn't the biggest but the flavor was the best. It was HOT too....

Best on board meal I've had was dinner on my CO EDI-EWR flight.

A nice succulent chicken cordon blue with peas and carrots with a nice sauce. Doesn't sound exciting but it was the best piece of chicken I've ever eaten. Full of flavour, moist and tender. The veg nicely cooked through with a bite to it and the souce very smooth and not over rich or sticky.

Just like it should be. Big grin

But, yeah, DL does serve some tasty pasta dishes on their transatlantic flights. Got great lasagna on a flight from AMS to ATL on DL.
