Which US Frequent Flyer To Apply For?

Tue Aug 09, 2005 12:06 am

Hi everyone !

Newly based in NYC, I am about to apply for a US Frequent Flyer program, but really don't know which one to choose between CO, NW, AA, DL and UA.
May be some of u can give me some advice ? Which FFP enables to quickly reach the elite status, has a fair recognition policy towards Elite members (e.g. upgrade, lounge access), etc.
Thanks !

Is your travel primarily domestic or international?

I would go for either DL, CO or NW. THey are part of Skyteam and you could get into each other's clubs if you are a member of one of them. I have seemed to be able to accrue miles pretty fast on NW...they seem to have a lot of promotions such as getting 1000 miles by checking in at NWA.com, etc.

Join Air Canada's program. Fly mainly on UA/US.

(the logic behind this: UA/US *A gold don't get domestic lounge access in the USA. Air Canada's program is the easiest to achieve *A gold in of all the *A carriers.)

Depends what you want, of course. If lounge access is important....

Hi Zrs70,

Actually I will do both kind of travels, but for my international travels I aim to use my future US FFP for destinations such as US-Asia, US-South America, US-Canada... while I am using AF-KL FFP for transatlantic flights...

I say join Skyteam as you have 3 main US based choices for accrural--plus Alaska Airlines. Continental also floats alot of mileage accrural specials that you can take advantage of.

If you have an AF-KL FF already, why join another Skyteam one? You should be able to get NW/DL/CO points on the AF one.

Hi, just my two cents but I'd go for UA, they give you FF miles for every booking class, not bad at all compared to some other airlines. Being a Mileage Plus member myself, I'm very satisfied with the service, especially with the mileage credit after each flight. Feel free to contact me if you choose UA, sometimes they have special promotions giving extra miles for new members enrolled by existing members...

Regards.

If you travel US-Asia a lot, then you should pick UA, simply because they, with NW (covered by AF-KL), have the strongest networks between Asia and the US. I'm a UA Mileage Plus member myself, and I'm very happy with it.

It all depends on where you off to, and what you want out of the program. Join NW as we do have one of the best progams where your not locked into a limited number of upgrades once you reach an elite level like on UA or AA. NWA also has the most number of FC seats on domestic narrow bodies (Airbus, and Dc9s all have 16 seats vs UA, AA, CO, DL which will have either 8 or 12) which means more chances to uprade. If your flying INTL, NW is part of SkyTeam and you can use your miles on ANY member of SkyTeam for anything form upgrading, reward tickets etc.
