Air France/Qantas To Melbourne

Mon Aug 15, 2005 7:04 am

Hi all,

I have recently booked a return trip to Melbourne in January 2006 with Air France /Qantas, and I was wondering what to expect in terms of the service having never flown Air France before.

Specifically, I'm flying a Bae 146-200 from EDI to CDG, then a 777-300ER from CDG to Singapore Changi Intl. (not sure of Code). From there, it is a Qantas 747-400 to MEL. All sectors are in Economy class.

I got a special fare for the time of year, so I am not really complaining, but just wondered if anyone out there has done the route?

Thanks for any replies.

Hi Pimpy69,

Looks like you've had to wait a while for any answers. But i'll tell you now what I know.

I've only flown Air France long haul to Mauritius (MRU) so my experience is not vast. I would say their service in economy is quite normal - nothing special. The aircraft on that route (777-300ER) is a nice thing to fly with.

The next leg from Singapore Changi (SIN) to MEL on Qantas 747-400 is an experience I've had several times. Very good service indeed and the jumbo is equipped with modern entertainment. On this leg Qantas staff really can take care of you and make you enjoy your flight.

But if the timetable is, as I understand from using AF/QF, the unfortunate thing is that you have to nights to survive and that is not so very nice. I would never do it as you are doing - I would have a stopover in beautiful Singapore and then take a Qantas morning flight to Australia. That is what I've always done.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay in Australia! Melbourne is a very nice city.

Best regards,

I have done the trip about 13 times in the last 5 years, usually on QF and BA and usually in J class. However, I have done it once in Y on QF and have flown AF Y to NY and back.

i) QF is WAY better than AF in terms of overall experience, consistency of service and end-to-end reliability.
ii) AF Y is, all things being equal, as good as most and better than many, including all American carriers: food and wine are good, entertainment is not bad IF it works, everything else is 'Russian roulette'.
iii) The aircraft on this sector is now the 777-300ER for which AF is the launch customer, so at least the a/c should be reasonably 'fresh' and have the new AVOD, IF it works (usually doesn't by all accounts).
iv) Strongly suggest taking of Melatonin from SIN to MEL to address jet-lag and assist sleeping on this sector, otherwise it may take four days to recover at the other end. You can get it over the counter at the pharmacy in T1 at SIN.
v) If you bought a ticket from QF, join their (or perhaps BA's) FF programme before leaving, if AF, theirs: there are too many miles at stake to waste

Enjoy the trip.

When all's said and done, there'll be more said than done.

Thanks for the replies guys, you have given me a better idea of what to expect.

Thanks for the advice regarding the melatonin, I hadn't really thought about that until you mentioned it. The ticket has been issued by AF all the way through to Melbourne, so I've joined their Flying Blue scheme to pick up the miles.

Thanks guys,

Your gonna love QF. The service offered by them on the flts i have had with them was amazing. Great funny crew, good IFE, nice looking planes, and of course there going to a great destination.

Have fun
