I personaly think its a rush job to compete with the 787, it seems identical to the A330, the 787 seems to have had a lot more thought been put in,BUT THATS MY OWN OPINION!

Don't really have an opinion. Should be the A330-500. Pictures show a slightly different A330. Like a 737-100 compared to a 738 with winglets and no eyebrows. Sort of boring, perhaps. I'd like to see something new. Like a two-floor narrowbody or something...

I think that the A350 is just a copy of the A330 lauched specificaly to compete against the 787 which Airbus forseed to have great succes (which is really happening). The A350 program sucks and the 787 will be more succesfull, no doubt. Just my opinion.

I like the publicity that has gone along with the 787 and the A380. It seems the A350 isn't getting much of a spotlight, but folks on the forum claim it "is" this and "is" that.... Gives me the feeling that the aircraft will be a design chasing a set of specs intended to beat Boeing; which in turn sounds like a recipe for disaster. Whatever it ends up being I hope it is equally as successful as the 787. The industry would be best served if one did not dominate the other IMHO.

Like others have said, I think it's a "rush job". Why stick with the same fuselage width as the A330/340? From what I've seen/heard on A.net, it'll have a new wing, MUCH more composites built in, new engines and some tweaked avionics, but nothing like the clean-sheet 787. I think Airbus could offer a much better product (and maybe beat the 787) if they scrapped what they have now, and start over. But...you won't see that happen. Right now, it's still too early to know what exactly the A350 will develop into to, but Airbus keeps giving me a "rush job vibe".

The next question is...Will airlines wait in line for months/years to have a 787 when a product which is almost as good is sitting there just waiting to fly more or less the next month???

I think in the public eye it can be seen as a "rush job", but look at this. Would you spend millions on an aircraft if it where to be a rush job, just after putting a lot of money on the A380....I dont think airbus are. Also it is in its first stages...the design will change.

I was hoping for a new and unique design, but in the end it just seems to me to be a "souped up" A330. From the pictures I have seen, I cannot tell the 330 from the 350.

I'll second that.
I don't even like the A330 that much, and I had high hopes
for the A350, but it's just that. A suoped up A330.  Sad

I somewhat think that too. But it saves money by not changing the design too much. Plus, the A350 will be more fuel efficient. I also agree that airbus is competing with the 787.

I think what happened to the 787 has been a good advertising product. Shark tail...etc... and finally what you have is a modern product better than the airbus one ( well its the successor of the 757...and it should be compared to this one ). All the rest is PURE merchandising.
Airbus will produce a good a/c, similar to the 787 or even better because it has to if they want to take an slice....

Just my opinion

sadly the shark's tail has been ditched

I can't beliwve some of teh comments on this thread... the success of an airliner does not depend on whether some enthusiasts think it looks sufficiently different from another successful member of the family. The success will be determined by total cost of ownership for airlines (commonality, fuel, cost price etc etc).

Hmm its a tough call trying to figure out what the A350 is about.

I have a brochure here from Airbus that makes the A350 sound like an all singing all dance wondermachine. Of course, one should not expect any less. But their claims are misleading.
On several occasions they mention the 787 and then quote themselves a nice big fast improvement in fuel efficiency which leads you to believe it is compared to the 787.
Well, the A350 will be heavier than the 787 so they'll need to break the laws of physics in order to gain 20% fuel efficiency over the 787 using the same engines!

From everything I seen, I'm certain Airbus got caught with their pants down with. They had their heads stuck in the A380 program for too long.

Leahy and his cronies repeatedly went on record to say that the A330 was all they needed to compete with the 787. Then Boeing released more detailed information. Airbus suddenly saw the 787 was not just a pipe dream.
Then finally EK goes public and says the 787 is too small for their needs.

And that is the reason why I think Airbus are planning the A350 to be the size it is. They're running after EK and QR.

They seem to think that adding more seats is the best solution to beating the 787s proposed fuel efficiency. But Airbus seem to forget that size is not everything. Something evidenced by EK's apparent reluctance to order the A350. I read that they were not happy with Airbus's equations on the A350s CASM.

If Airbus want to get a piece of the 787s market pie... they need a similar sized jet with similar seating, range and efficiency. Not a bigger, heavier, slower and less efficient overhaul of an existing aircraft.

Oh sure, Airbus will sell the A350. They can sell ice to Eskimos and make the Antarctic sound like the Bahamas with their superb PR spin.

Overall, I think the A350 will fly. But I am certain its going to be another A340-600. A derivative which is too heavy and falls short on its promised performance.

I'm joining the bandwagon. I believe the A350 is a knee-jerk reaction to the 787 and will not do well against it, and trust me, I'm not an A or B man, I just believe this is whats gonna happen.

The 787 wins this duel by a mile, the A350 is just too much of a rush job to compete. I don't like the idea of a plane simply being modified to compete against another plane which is outside its class (And thereby stalling the production of the well selling A330). I hate to say this, but COME ON AIRBUS, YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS.

Cheers,

Boeing did a great job with 737NG. I think Airbus will do the same with the A350.

The 787 will be more advanced but it won't be a huge advantage vs the 350( the same as the A320 vs 737 NG).

It will be a tight commercial fight between A and B. The real winners will be the airlines and their passengers.

People use this argument all the time. But unfortunately you cannot compare the projects 1 to 1 like that. They are not the same, despite external similarities.

But you are right, Boeing did a great job with the 737NG, its actually lighter than the A320 on a per seat basis. Not bad for a fuselage essentially 30 years old in basis.
