Personally, I would like to see much of the US's legacy airlines disappear.

I think a system of smaller airlines catering for certain areas of the country, and then having alliances to link between each airlines hub.

The whole US system of covering such a large expanse of land and markets is too much.

That's essentially what the US had before deregulation - airlines could only fly certain routes, and to get from one destination to another, you may have had to switch airlines once or twice, especially if it was a smaller city a good distance away.

Independence Air.
Maybe United.

If the government decides to stop bailing airlines out, probably 5 or 6 carriers.

I would like to see DAL and NWA disappear. Would like to see CO get sucked up by UAL. See Skywest become a better carrier, holding their crew accountable for their lack of urgencies.

Just my opinions.

Yes because those obvious choices such as US Airways just went away...didn't they?

United seems to be doing quite with year 3 of bankruptcy fast approaching. Delta will probably sell/spin off Comair next to raise cash and then CH11 the joint and follow UAL's lead. Northwest...who knows. It helps owning most of your planes. FlyI is definitely a weak player right now.

I think we just have to wait and see what oil prices do. If they continue to go up, a lot can change all around. Remember's Southwest's hedges eventually come to an end, so seeing how they restructure to adjust to the impending spike in their fuel costs will be very interesting.

You're a fool and clearly know very little, if anything, about aviation. You thrive on unfounded speculation - and pay no, or very little, attention to well-researched forecasts and facts. It's sad, really.

I think it's very typical to see UA listed on this thread as a likely looser.

I must object of course. We have slashed our costs by billions and the folks over at Deutche Bank, Citi, and Chase are all lined up to give us financing for our exit from Ch.11. These are some of the largest financiers in the world, so why would they write checks to a company that is going to loose?

Our CASM has been dramatically reduced (barring fuel which everyone is getting spanked with) and we still have all our core assets: the most enviable route network in the world, a great fleet mix, amazing brand recognition, and of course talented employees.

In my opinion, based on the aforementioned, United has a better chance of being around 5 yrs from now then the other legacies that haven't reduced thier CASM as much and haven't had the luxuries of Bankruptcy Court to re-adjust every aspect of thier business.

I guess, though they still covered large percentages of the country, no?

I only say this would be a better idea, because the one rule of business is stick with what you know.

For instance, airlines start off in a localised operating arena and do well. The problem is, they expand from here to markets further afield, where peoples lives and choices are different. You cannot please everyone, and therefore, you end up with a product which appeals to people in area A, but not area B. Whilst area A is profitable, no ones operating profit is 100% of costs, and therefore area B makes the airline make a loss.

SAS Sweden should be put out of it's misery. The hub at ARN will be closed down, and all routes will be flown by Skyways and Flyme. That would also give the rest of SK a chance to get it's sh!t together.

Cheers

You can pretty much kiss that name goodbye already, seeing as how they became one with US Airways.

And Pan Am, in their current supposed condition, is not worthy of the name and won't live long.

Why on earth would you be surprised if CO was around in 5 years? They are one of the most financially sound airlines in North America. The airlines that are in true danger of being gone in 5 years are DL, NW, and UA.

And AA will probably last only because they have not yet cut benefits or pay, so they still have that to fall back on if need be.

I think there will be some mix-ups in the future...for instance maybe NW and DL merging or something to the extent or sell off some of their routes to other airlines to streamline a bit...I Don't think TZ or Flyi will be here...and if NK doesn't make some smarter decisions they maybe gone...I sure hope so but that is all my 2cents and pure speculation with no facts to back up any of my crap

Just because Singapore is too small, it doesn't mean they are going to go bust. People fly them because they are world renouned for their quality service.
And you think if JL is going to go belly up because of their livery, well then that is just sad.

This is my absolute best guess:

Obscure airlines like Helios, Alexandair, Fly, Onur, and TANS will get their Air Operator's Certificate revoked, forcing the obscure airlines to shut down.

I think BMI WILL still be around (but under LH ownership!)

I can see UA going, as well as the likes of OA (alomost gone anyway!), US and Alitalia.

On the charter side (in the UK) MYT and Excel will struggle, whereas I think BY, MON and FCC will still be around. Maybe with one or two other 'independent' charter carriers will spring up to fill the capacity short-fall (ala late 80s/early 90s)

Airlines that will not exist in 5 years? Hmmm... I would have to say that with the current market situation, more than one US airline will merge with another in an effort to keep costs down or bring up their revenue in key markets where they are losing money.
To me, unfortunately - NW is gonna be one of those merged. If the name is going to survive, I don't know.
